Honestly, this isn't really dragging. If anything we're moving at lightspeed compared to how the comic started. The problem is you and I and the rest of us are addicted to Hussie's superfast update schedule, so when we keep up with this stuff daily it feels like it's moving at a snail's pace.But if you go back and read through the troll arc from the beginning, it's almost alarming how fast this shit moves. Hussie is spot-on in saying that this wouldn't be possible without the past four acts of subtle or unsubtle universe-building.AND BESIDES. Slow-time is a good thing. Authors know that the slack-periods between action are just as important as the action itself. Otherwise your audience burns itself out, and you have to keep resorting to more and more extreme methods of keeping the pace. See: Axe Cop.

The clarification on the earlier stuff was nice but really this was one thing that could have been left to the imagination. It's really just invited the question "Well, uh, how do couples 'mix' their genetic material in the first place?" This latest update feels particularly weird in the context of Karkat's earlier comments to Vriska, in that he acted as though concupiscent relationships - while usually desirable to the participants - were essentially optional, and participation was up to the one seeking or not seeking them out. Vriska's matesprit potential was laughed off with a "SERIOUSLY, LIKE THAT WOULD EVEN INTEREST YOU" - as though she had any choice in the matter! But apparently she doesn't; it's mate (eventually) or die! I get the feeling that would spur nearly anyone to action, even if they wouldn't be seeking a relationship out on its own merits.That detail just seems so out-of-place given what we know already. It's frankly boggling to me.
I'm gonna put myself in the "TMI, Hussie" camp. It's interesting, but it would have been perfectly fine to leave up to our imaginations. Also, it drives home the fact that if their planet hadn't been destroyed, most of these kids would have been culled. When Karkat told Vriska that she had zero luck in romance, he was saying that she was probably going to die.
