Okay, here's the dealie. My Dell Inspiron 1520 of 4 years done up and died on me. I need a new one.

My dad, however, is a watchful protective papa bear, and will not let me purchase anything until he has nit-picked the fuck out of it. He currently has a Dell Inspiron 17R picked out for me, because he has a hard-on for Dell because that's all we buy and we have very few issues. Some random specs from it:
>4GB RAM
>500GB HDD
>17.3" display (1600x900)
>Intel GMA HD (god damnit I can't find any specific numbers on which card it is)

So I'm like 99% positive I can do better than this for the price, since it's Dell, which everyone but my dad hates. This one will run about $890, but the catch is, that's including warranty. That's the dealbreaker. My dad will NOT let me buy a computer without a godmode superwarranty that even covers shit like if I was a retard and dumped my soda on the keyboard for 3 years. So what I need is something with comparable or better specs for a comparable price, INCLUDING THE 3 YEAR SUPER-WARRANTY.

Smaller HDDs are acceptable, as is a smaller (but not too much, keep it over 14") display, and I don't give a fuck about battery life. Also, gaming. Nothing extreme, I don't need to play Crysis on max or anything, but I will be playing games on it. Primarily Source Engine games and Mass Effect, but it would be nice if it could handle GTA IV. Other than that, I won't be putting too much strain on the thing, just dicking around on the internet and drawing.

Halp.

thats actually a really shitty list

Your mother is a shitty list.

It is a pretty bad list, given that the only "budget" options are in the netbook category. Every build focuses on all-around features, as opposed to picking and choosing what I need, since I'm more than willing to sacrifice battery/HDD space/portability in exchange for a better video card and warranty.

Also, my dad has said ABSOLUTELY NO ASUS. Their "warranty" doesn't cover getting it repaired at a local shop, you have to go two weeks without your computer while you send it all the way to California.

They are budget because they pack an absolute minimum of size and features. People get laptops for 2 reasons; as portable terminals and as desktop replacements. You want a desktop replacement. You probably won't be able to trade battery life for higher end graphics as the two have little to do with each other.

I'd select a few from these lists and punch them into google, see what you get review-wise. You want us to just tell you what to buy, but in truth there are a thousand things that can go wrong with any personal computer system. I'd rather you not be stuck with a shit laptop and yet another reason to curse my name.

But frankly, if you want to slip something past your dad, do the fucking research yourself, cause frankly I'm too lazy.

Sub-$800 full-body laptops are almost always terrible. Buying one almost guarantees a blatant flaw. (Whether it be heat, low battery life, bad screen, low build quality, etc.)

No hard feelings about any of this. I know it's all my responsibility, and I appreciate any and all help you guys are giving. In all honesty, I'm pretty happy with the one my dad picked out for me, but I'm just not positive I can't do better for the money, and was hoping you guys might know. Also, I know nothing about comparing video cards or what I would need in that department.

Alright, ordering tomorrow. Leaning towards HP, but here's the final matchup. Any last-minute arguments for either side?

The core i3-370m is the least of Intels' latest line of processors. The thing about these processors is, they're good. The i5 is the standard for medium to high end gaming, with the i3. Even though it doesn't have a discreet graphics card, it may work very well for your needs.

If Battery and weight is not an issue then Acer can be quite good. ive got an Acer 5920g with a T7300 Processor and Geforce 8600m GS, and since ive done a clean install of W7 over Vista on it its been pretty fast and playable. The Laptop does have alot of faults (the touchpad has stopped working and the battery is almost completely useless) but they are almost all a result of my family not being able to look after it properly. Still its a decent laptop, and if in the future i need a new laptop to complement my Netbook (like if i go to Uni) i'll probably get an Acer since they're cheap hell.

I'm a fan of Asus. They've got a 3 year manufacurer warranty and 1 year accidental damage (including OH GOD SODA EVERYWHERE) warranty upon registration. I was given one of their old ass EEE 2G Surfs which is a piece of crap now hardware wise but it still runs like a charm. Thing's a brick house. I'm now happily running a newer EEE, the 1016P, which I won in a contest for filling out one of their surveys. I've only had it a week but so far so good. Personal experience with Toshiba is good as well, via my parents' laptops. Both second hand but working well still. Being second hand though, I have no idea how their warranty and support are.

So the budget is ~$900 and you're in the US?

My sister has a lappy of that series and she's pretty unhappy with it. Mostly software roblems, it seems, which I would find worrying because that would be pretty much the sam across the series regardless of specs.
