There's actually a lot, but usually it's because only the villains are enjoyable. This is a rare series where you can love ALMOST everyone, good and bad alike.

I never considered most of the Navy characters villains. Akainu is a super dick but guys like smoker and even Magellan are just doing their jobs. Character like that just make good antagonists Inspector Zenigata comes to mind.

We have to remember we're in a series where, technically, we're viewing things from the "bad guys'" side of things. We tend to think of pirates as good hearted and goofy because that's who the Strawhats are, but I'd say a good 75% of all the pirates in the One Piece world are villainous assholes and thugs. So the Marines, no matter how harsh, are doing the right thing.

The World Government, however, is another matter entirely. Their corruption and general nonsense is just way past acceptance point.

I have a theory that the elder stars are actually seriously doing what they can to protect order. I remember in the ohara flashback, the stars really regretted having to kill the scholars. One of them had their hand on their head, pretty upset. Luffy is Coby's inspiration, but it's very clear the two will never be on the same level, and they're not rivals so much as two good friends who are working towards similar goals on opposite sides. He fulfills a different role than Smoker: he's the hope and goodness of the Marines personified. Just like Luffy is the future of piracy that leads tons of people into a new age of romanticism, it seems like Coby is growing up to be the inspiration and center of the Marines. He doesn't oppose Luffy nearly as much as he does Akainu.

Tashigi and Coby are pretty similar, but their goals are fairly different in that while Coby wants to simply be the best Marine and protect everyone, Tashigi has more of a focused goal in her need for strength and her desire to prove herself. Coby's the heart, and Tashigi's the brawn, sort of.

Further more music was a substantial step down and felt like a standard episode of the anime where the anime itself knew better than that.

Additionally garbage CGI effects EVERYWHERE, I cannot take Crocodile seriously when he looks like poorly animated CGI every time he uses his powers.

And yeah, just for their retelling garbage 8 & to a lesser extent 9 are the worst One Piece movies in my opinion.

The Nami special was good and basically WAS just a reanimated version of the Arlong arc.

Time and space are warped there because of whatever it is Roger's crew found and weren't able to truly understand due to being grog-swilling hoodlums and not brainy scholars.
The reason they were able to find their way to the island was because of Roger's ability to hear 'the voice of all things'.

Its about as likely as anything else. The main thing I cannot contemplate is One Piece actually ending.... its gone on so long and unlike the other members of the "Big Three" series its still staying stong.

The only way to reach Raftel is to be in a committed and openly romantic relationship like Roger was

I think thereès a very specific reason for that: Unlike the other two, and frankly unlike a lot of long form fiction, One Piece has never significantly strayed off or accomplished the initial plot goal of the series- Luffy becoming Pirate King.

16 years, and it's still gradually moving towards that conclusion, but in a way that maintains the wacky adventurism of the early series while constantly revealing further complexity in the world.

I wanna pick up the manga, currently finished Thriller Bark in the anime.
Should I go on and backtrack all the way to volume one? I understand that I'll miss all the cover stories and such bonuses.

Back in the day when I dropped Naruto I picked up the manga from where I stopped, got to the latest chapter and then picked up the rest.

Granted that was nearly ten years ago so it wasn't as much of a chore.

If you're reading in scanlation, there's a big chunk of the early series where the scans are truly awful. Not DUWANG level but still really bad.

I wouldn't advise you against it because the manga is really great, but you wouldn't be missing out on much by just jumping in where the anime left you off.

It's kind of a huge recurring theme in One Piece that no one is invincible? Whitebeard fell to normal everyday gunfire, Haki exists pretty much solely to counter Logias, and then recently Law proved that Haki isn't enough to completely negate DFs. Luffy regularly loses to his opponents multiple times before finally defeating them.

There's a pretty excellent power balance in OP.
