Besides, Ace had been doing a whole lot of suck and nothing up until that point. I'm not saying he deserved to die, but he deserved to go away forever.

I find all three admirals to be great characters for their story roles. That's all you can ask for out of a group of antagonists, really.

There's actually a lot, but usually it's because only the villains are enjoyable. This is a rare series where you can love ALMOST everyone, good and bad alike.

I never considered most of the Navy characters villains. Akainu is a super dick but guys like smoker and even Magellan are just doing their jobs. Character like that just make good antagonists Inspector Zenigata comes to mind.

We have to remember we're in a series where, technically, we're viewing things from the "bad guys'" side of things. We tend to think of pirates as good hearted and goofy because that's who the Strawhats are, but I'd say a good 75% of all the pirates in the One Piece world are villainous assholes and thugs. So the Marines, no matter how harsh, are doing the right thing.

The World Government, however, is another matter entirely. Their corruption and general nonsense is just way past acceptance point.

I'd say people like Smoker and Coby are the closest things to unambiguously heroic characters in the series. All of the characters we think of as the heroes are well-meaning antiheroes.

I have a theory that the elder stars are actually seriously doing what they can to protect order. I remember in the ohara flashback, the stars really regretted having to kill the scholars. One of them had their hand on their head, pretty upset. Not only that, but releigh said that the strawhats shouldn't jump to conclusions, especially robin, when it comes to how things really are, and that they wouldn't understand as they are now. The nobles are covering up the history, but it might be for a really grey reason that I think Oda will spring on the viewer at the end, bastion style.

So far, there has not been one villain in One Piece who does things "just cause." Every single one of them has a strong motive and even stronger ambitions for everything they do. I agree with you, I think the Gorosei are doing what they honestly think is best for everyone. They don't seem to be greedy or want power, just maintain a certain order in the world. We've also not seen them even mention the World Nobles; I think that interaction or their comments will shed a better light on them once/if it comes.

If he did base Paulie off of the picture, meh. As far as the spectrum of inspiration to plagiarism goes, that's pretty far up in the inspiration corner. Arcueid from Tsukihime was based off of a model in a very similar way, iirc, and I'm sure there's more.

I dunno man, my issue with strong world is that luffy took down someone who might have been considered a yonkou in his time alongside newgate and roger. Someone who needed both garp and sengoku to take him down.

I'm more interested in the ladder but anything that expands on the Revolutionaries would be cool
