I recently happened upon this series and I just love it. I also quickly became aware of the halt in translation. From what I've gathered, there's now four volumes.

I feel rather helpless. I'd like to help get the translations going again, but I don't possess any of the skills that seem integral to the process. I really wish some publisher would pick this up for an English-translation release, as I'd happily buy it. Not to mention the figure in the pic Junk posted. The thought of a little plastic Fran sitting next to Dagon and Cthulhu on my desktop makes me grin maniacally.

I'm not too sure how I feel about that idea. My gut reaction is extreme unease. The self contained chapters and the occasional multi-part story, strung together with recurring elements and a stable timeline, are working really well. What keeps me from reading more manga is the fact that so many get caught up in the massive story arch thing, and I have a hard time getting into things. Franken Fran has a formula that works, and I'd hate to see what's not broken get "fixed".

True that, and she tends to think more about function than form. If it acts and thinks like a dog, then as long as it can physically perform the basic duties of a dog, it doesn't much matter what it looks like.

And looking over it again, while she did seem reluctant at first seemingly due to the relative difficulty for something seemingly trivial, her soft spot for love did seem to win out, especially at the end when she scarcely even hesitated to do it again for someone else.

I was more horrified by the Cacoon-Baby one. This one was rather plain for a Franken Fran story. I mean, the whole "stitch a bunch of people together" solution was used way back when Veronica was introduced.

I can't believe I'm typing this, but this chapter was kind of old-hat, and the reason why the people did what they did was damn near broadcasted in capital, bold letters half-way through.

However, it's interesting in that this is the first time it could be said that Fran "failed". She left them to die, and she's saved the lives of worse people before. It seems odd that her great believe in the sanctity of life was so easily thrown away just because of the existence of a couple of drug addicts.

Oh well, one lack-lustre chapter out of 30 isn't so bad.

I've been listening to this a bit. Fran has a nice voice. Actually, the way she sounds in this is eerily close to how I read her in the manga. Veronica's voice threw me a little, I guess because I imagined her sounding mature beyond her (apparent) age, what with being an experienced killing machine.

I can't speak Japanese, but having read the manga I can generally figure out what part of the story things are at. It's nice just to listen to Fran's/Ami Koshimizu's voice. Also, the sound effects are excellent; all sorts of visceral crunching and squishing.

This chapter had a different feel than usual, didn't it? Not bad, just different, kind of free-form and open. Usually Fran ends with something like "In a hilarious, Twilight-Zone style twist, Event A happens!" This chapter is different; Fran observes the monster, and we observe other people's reactions to it, but there's no "Well, that wraps things up" moment, and it could be the first part in an ongoing storyline. Which would be fine by me!

Damn, Kigitsu Katsuhisa must really love Kamen Rider. He should do a proper series about it sometime.

Wait, did I miss/forget something? Last time we saw Sentinel I (chapter 38.5) he was still stuck as a half-coral man, pissed at Sentinel II for ripping him off and beating him up, and contemplating joining Black Lotus. When did he go back to being outwardly human and join up with Sentinel II to destroy Black Lotus (which is actually a charity organization and apparently includes the Sentinel Victims Union)?

It's your own fault for picking such an unoriginal character design.

>I'll avenge your deaths!

Yup... I'm sufficiently weirded out once again.

I take it I've once again missed something.

In the original Kamen Rider series, Kamen Rider V3's sole motivation for becoming a cyborg was to avenge his family, who had been killed by a Monster of the Week, and he seldom thought about anything else. It's a trope that's been used in subsequent Rider shows, with Accel from Kamen Rider W being the most recent.

Of course, these characters usually mellow out, mature, and move on from their grief as the series goes on, but at the start, their only characterisation is MUST GET REVENGE!! which Katsuhisa is obviously lampshading here.

That does give a bit more detail, though I gathered the general picture of things. It was mostly that he let all those people get killed anyway just so he'd have something to avenge, and even had that little speech like he'd had nothing to do with it. 'Twas rather freaky.

Though if you were referring to my saying I'd missed something, I was talking about Junk's remark.

Okay I got tired of waiting for my question to get answered, so I got off my butt and employed some basic Google-fu. Gawd.

Junk, the only similarity she has to your character is the stitches. Everything else, I don't see a resemblance.

Now, whether you were serious about the webcomic thing, I still don't know. So if you do in fact have one, point me in its direction 'cause I'd like to see.
