Any idea when we're supposed to be seeing more of this series? I've heard the artist stopped due to an injury or something.
I only heard the translator stopped because of MMORPG addiction and seems to be withholding the raws.
This is sad news
...Why must you say things like that Junk. Its coming back I tell you. ITS COMING BACK. ; _ ;
This site:http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%95%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B1%E3%83%B3%E3%83%BB%E3%81%B5%E3%82%89%E3%82%93Says Franken Fran is on Chapter 28. So, we're missing 5 issues of RAWs; they must be someplace. On a side note, there seems to be a Franken Fran drama CD, which makes me happy.
>>35577Well, I'm heading over to the local Kinokuniya's, so I'll see if I can pick up all the volumes and scan them. I just need to know who to send them to.
>>35587That would be unbelievably cool of you, Junk.
I recently happened upon this series and I just love it. I also quickly became aware of the halt in translation. From what I've gathered, there's now four volumes.I feel rather helpless. I'd like to help get the translations going again, but I don't possess any of the skills that seem integral to the process. I really wish some publisher would pick this up for an English-translation release, as I'd happily buy it. Not to mention the figure in the pic Junk posted. The thought of a little plastic Fran sitting next to Dagon and Cthulhu on my desktop makes me grin maniacally.
>>35587So did anything ever come of this? Has Junk, or anyone else, gotten a hold of the new volumes for scanning?
Fran confuses me. On the one hand, she often does things I find deplorable. On the other hand, she's prone to surprising acts of compassion, and she's so damn cute I can't be mad at her.
http://www.onemanga.com/Franken_Fran/23.1/Finally, someone has picked it up again. I don't know if anyone related to this translation will ever read this, but if they do?Thanks a lot.
>>39854It says Hox is responsible, so I guess you can make a thank you thread on /a/.
Or you could, you know, drop a thank you on his release blog.http://hox.fluffypress.com/
>>39854 >>39859I'm so happy, I actually cried a little.I'm definitely going to give my thanks to Hox.
>>39854Yay!
>>39859Speaking of which, chapter 24http://hox.fluffypress.com/archives/811
>>39996Hm. Biblical. Also that cover, god damn it.
>>40017>Also that cover, god damn it.I know. Damn near drooled on my keyboard. :)I'm also loving the joke translations they're including at the credits pages.
Oh, man, Franken Fran. The physiology nerd in me has never been simultaneously pissed/overjoyed.
New chapter. Veronica being simultaneously awesome and adorable. Nothing new here.
>/a/ pondering what a blowjob from Adorea would feel like
>>40269Really, really awesome. With or without her detachable face, I'd be willing to try. Also, the latest chapter made me want to give Veronica a hug.
>>40270I just now realized the reason for her tits being so big on this cover...
>>40271Well, everyone's boobs get exaggerated on the covers, but if you're thinking what I think you're thinking, it's a very interesting thought and yet another reason Adorea rocks. Yay for modularity!
Next chapter is up!Just when I think it can't get any stranger, this chapter proves me wrong. Then when I think this chapter can't get any stranger, it pulls out a Flying Spaghetti Monster .
Oh god this new chapter! I laughed so hard my neighbor came over to complain!
I for one welcome his noodley appendage.
Goddammit... just when I think this manga can't possibly freak me out anymore, along comes something like this chapter...
>>40408I was in too great a state of "Wait... what!?" for much laughter. I did lose it when I the fake translation page though.Polite sage for repost.
...well now they're just fucking with me.
Desty x Fran BFF
>>40484For a second there I thought that was a deliberately engrish way to say Desty x Flan. OTP
This activated my "D'awwww!" sensors.
New chapter up.And it's made of baw! ;_;
Pudding ;_;
Damn it Fran, Could it realy of been that hard to find a spare dog body? Hell a cat? Any animal other than a human! Poor thing ; _ ;
>>40685Whoa, that just opened up a realization. Remember that earlier chapter where she surgically modified several humans into dog-man creatures? Why didn't she just do that to the human body she used? I guess maybe it's 'cause she was kind of reluctant to get involved at all, but still...And she's really starting to baffle me. In previous chapters she's shown remarkable sympathy to the plights of others, albeit in her own weird way, but a little girl with a dead dog doesn't pluck her heartstrings?
>>40686She did seem more distracted than usual. Maybe she was working on something else. Please start having some kind of on going plot, please have some kind of on going plot
>>40696I'm not too sure how I feel about that idea. My gut reaction is extreme unease. The self contained chapters and the occasional multi-part story, strung together with recurring elements and a stable timeline, are working really well. What keeps me from reading more manga is the fact that so many get caught up in the massive story arch thing, and I have a hard time getting into things. Franken Fran has a formula that works, and I'd hate to see what's not broken get "fixed".
I honestly got the feeling She felt it too easy, like, she didn't care about making it look like a Dog because she'd done it before.
>>40699True that, and she tends to think more about function than form. If it acts and thinks like a dog, then as long as it can physically perform the basic duties of a dog, it doesn't much matter what it looks like. And looking over it again, while she did seem reluctant at first seemingly due to the relative difficulty for something seemingly trivial, her soft spot for love did seem to win out, especially at the end when she scarcely even hesitated to do it again for someone else.
NEW CHAPTER!
>>40854WHAT ARE THE ODDS?!
MATH DOES NOT WORK THIS WAY.Also this scene. The 'old days' were hot.
>>40861Is he strangling the woman in front of him? Not surprising given his, uh, personality. Still, ouch. Also, execution by chainsaws?Brutal/awesome.Kigitsu Katsuhisa really is an excellent storyteller. Every time I think things can't get stranger, he finds a new way to surprise me. Also has a knack for keeping things from getting too predictable. I was figuring almost from the start that things would end one way, then BAM lightning, and a bit of poetic justice.
The latest chapter proves that you should never trust anyone with an eyepatch.http://www.onemanga.com/Franken_Fran/29/01/
>>41008Christ, the Daily Mail readers get pissy about lolicon, what would they do if they knew about this?!
>>41016I... don't see the connection? I mean, horror gets a free pass most of the time.
>>41018Oh, well I thought they'd be up in arms against this sort of thing. Maybe I'm wrong. I'll shut up and sit in the corner now.
>Chapter 29I know at this point I should expect that every new chapter is going to find some way to blow my mind, but then I think 'Oh, what new madness could possibly come along?' Then the insanity happens and it's "WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE!?" all over again.
>>41019If it weren't overtly a gruesome horror series, most definitely. But when it's labeled horror, complaining about how horrible it is an exercise in futility. Not that that'd stop the Daily Mail, though.
>>41016Playing Devil's Advocate, loli is far more commonplace and accepted that overt horror and gore in anime. They find it worrying that almost every show, including several for children, sexualize minors with no reaction from the broadcasting companies.A horror series filled with gore is labeled as such, so it gets passed.
The impossible has happened.Something has actually freaked out Fran herself.http://www.onemanga.com/Franken_Fran/30/01/
>>41299To be honest, that's also the first time since chapter 5 that it managed to freak me out again as well.
>>41299Reminds me of this.
>>41299Well she certainly had an interesting solution to the problem.
>>41301I was more horrified by the Cacoon-Baby one. This one was rather plain for a Franken Fran story. I mean, the whole "stitch a bunch of people together" solution was used way back when Veronica was introduced. I can't believe I'm typing this, but this chapter was kind of old-hat, and the reason why the people did what they did was damn near broadcasted in capital, bold letters half-way through. However, it's interesting in that this is the first time it could be said that Fran "failed". She left them to die, and she's saved the lives of worse people before. It seems odd that her great believe in the sanctity of life was so easily thrown away just because of the existence of a couple of drug addicts.Oh well, one lack-lustre chapter out of 30 isn't so bad.
>>41311I thought she was implying she'd be back once their "high" wore off a bit.
Vol. 4 extra is up! Though this means things will slow down a bit now, as it's a matter of waiting for new chapters to get published. Fortunately there's a bit of good news regarding that from Hox's blog:>Volume 4 extra is out, meaning that we’ve wrapped up volume 4. Thank Amuro again for providing the raws, cleaning, typesetting, and the little jokes at the end of each chapter.>Now where to go from here? Well, a guy named Vexed recently contacted me to say that he subscribed to the monthly magazine that Franken Fran is serialized in and will thus be scanning future chapters from chapter 38 and onwards. As for the missing chapters 31-37, we’ll just have to wait until vol. 5 is out for Amuro to buy and scan. In any case, I hope you enjoyed vol.4 and will look forward to future chapters!
So how many volumes before merchandise or an anime is started? Its obviously popular.
I keep trying to read this but it keeps grossing me out. What is it about horror manga that's so much more fucked up than anything else?
>>41515...It's right there in the name?Horror. You're supposed to be horrified.
>>41516I mean horror manga are more fucked up than any horror movies, books or comics I've ever seen
>>41517You read the comic about the woman who was impregnated by a giant fly?
>>41519And it turned out she was completely hollow from the backside?
>>41519Not the person you were talking to but I did and while it was certainly horrific I still think horror manga are more horrific than their western counterparts. Said comic could have been written by Junji Ito but it was drawn in a very different way. I think the black and white manga style works better for action and horror.
>>41521>I think the black and white manga style works better for action and horror.I agree. It's something I really like about The Walking Dead--the black and white makes it feel much more atmospheric than it would in color.
Ha! I loved the BlackJack reference chapter. I immediately thought of it and then the author confirmed it. Also, it was nice that it didn't have a twist or anything. Sometimes, the variety is good.
>>41608Wasn't the first chapter pretty much a Black Jack reference?
>>41612I thought the whole thing was a pretty blatant Blackjack homage?
Imagine my delight when one of the artists I watch on dA posted some lovely art of Fran! :D
Figured you guys would want this.Franken Fran Audio Drama CD.http://www.mediafire.com/?ztghgyk1ondFran- Ami KoshimizuVeronica-Chihara Minori
>>43803Much thanks for posting this, kind anon. :DI've been listening to this a bit. Fran has a nice voice. Actually, the way she sounds in this is eerily close to how I read her in the manga. Veronica's voice threw me a little, I guess because I imagined her sounding mature beyond her (apparent) age, what with being an experienced killing machine.I can't speak Japanese, but having read the manga I can generally figure out what part of the story things are at. It's nice just to listen to Fran's/Ami Koshimizu's voice. Also, the sound effects are excellent; all sorts of visceral crunching and squishing.
Chapter 39 is up!As someone who's never liked those big mascot costumes, this chapter was particularly freaky.
>>44718it's that much better if you imagine that the theme park is actually Disneyland and that the song is "it's a small world afterall"
>>44718What an awesome "EHH? EHH? GET IT?" ending.
>>44719I was already thinking Disneyland/world, but adding "It's a Small World" to the mix... yes that's more unsettling. o-o
Volume five is out, and the first two chapters have been translated.http://www.1000manga.com/Franken_Fran/31/http://www.1000manga.com/Franken_Fran/32/And the Kamen Rider wannabes are back!
>>45157>chapter 31>You're tiny, you must have tiny gutsNo rip an' tear? :'(
Two new chapters are out!http://www.mangafox.com/manga/franken_fran/v05/c034Japan will make anything moe. Even giant whale monsters.
And a new hot stitched-up gal appears! This one's not as nice as Fran or Veronica however...http://www.mangafox.com/manga/franken_fran/c040
>>45692Goddamn it Fran, you are so awesome.
>>45692Fran and Veronica aren't terribly nice either.
>>45702Fran is nice, she's warped warped like a hockey stick in the sun.
>>45692I like the new evil babe with the filthy language. :) Hope we see more of her.>>45702Fran means well, she's just... abstract in her thinking at times. I do think Veronica could perhaps be called "nicer" than Fran, in that she tends to think a bit more like a normal person. She takes into account things like quality of life, whereas Fran focuses more on simply ensuring life, whether it's a particularly good one or not.
Hickies... for SCIENCE!
New chapter!http://www.mangafox.com/manga/franken_fran/v05/c035/
And volume 5 is complete!http://www.mangafox.com/manga/franken_fran/v05/c036/This may have the most messed-up comeuppance scene I've seen in this series yet.http://www.mangafox.com/manga/franken_fran/v05/c037/This chapter raises a good point... how fucking creepy would all these big-eyed moeblob characters in anime look ike if they were flesh and blood?http://www.mangafox.com/manga/franken_fran/v05/c038.5/And some old faces return.
>Chapter 35What the hell made him think that an army of robo-clones of his wife wouldn't go mad at the sight of him with another woman?>Chapter 36I feel like the guy kind of got more than he deserved. Yeah, he tried to take a shortcut to fame, but he wasn't a major jerk.I love how flustered Veronica was when Fran asked if there was anyone she or Okita liked, and Adorea's display of affection looks fun. Like a full-face hug and kiss simultaneously.>Chapter 37This chapter kind of made me sad, though laughs were had at the 'alien' incident.>>46159>This chapter raises a good point... how fucking creepy would all these big-eyed moeblob characters in anime look ike if they were flesh and blood? I don't seem to have it but there's an image of an alien and an anime girl, and in-between the two is an overlay of the two images. Nearly a perfect match-up. Not strictly confined to anime/manga though, tons of cartoons look as though they'd possess nightmarish skeletons. Kinda cool and freaky.>Volume 5 ExtraThe continuing exploits of those guys is becoming one of my favorite side-plots.
It's sort of funny that Fran mentions the over-sized eyes when her and Veronic even moreso also have pretty damn big ones, even if they're not that exaggerated... which seems to actually be represented by their skeleton(s)!
>>46164The author admitted as much in the afterword.
>>46165Is it just me, or does the author seem hilariously cheery compared to his creation?
>>46174He does seem like a cheery fellow. It seems to be a trend, that artists who draw the strange and the horrific are themselves amiable, upbeat folks.
>>46159Was Adorea always able to talk?...
>>46206I believe so, yes. She spoke a little back in chapter 16. Generally she just seems rather quiet.
>>46174>>46183I guess when your head is filled with horrors like Franken Fran, real life must seem peaceful and idyllic in comparison.
>>46183 Kinoko Nasu is like that too. His stuff isn't as OH GOD as Franken Fran though.
You know what's weird? When Fran is being callous and careless about others she actually winds up doing a modecrum of good the guy who's brain was put into a mascot and got put into the body of a girl's horrible rapist father. But when she actively tries to do good TERRIBLE THINGS HAPPEN. The baby larva chapter... GOOD GOD THE BABY LARVA CHAPTER...So the answer is clear. We obviously must turn Fran into a Psychopath. Thus will a new age of peace, prosperity and health.
