Since the first thread is getting sort of full and it may be deterring new people from joining the project, I felt a second thread that summarized the first work's progress would be warranted. The goal is to create a fun, tasteful and well written superhero comic featuring a college age male-to-female transsexual, focusing on her superheroing and the balancing act she goes through, dealing with work, friends, school and her costumed adventures. The aim is to avoid cliches like soapboxing and preaching/lecturing about issues to the audience, to not focus on her transsexualism and, generally, to create an enjoyable piece of work.Feel free to join the thread and toss around ideas, we can always use writers, artists and thoughts in general. While not everything may be used, we all appreciate the help you give. The old thread, for anyone wanting to read it, can be found here: https://plus4chan.org/boards/coc/res/25796.html(Featured Picture by Banth. Main character costume concept)
The SummarySetting: So far, the blanket setting is set in Chicago, in either a somewhat parallel timeline's present or our current, near future . Technology is pretty much exactly the same, though many new kinds of machines and theories are being created, such as AI starting to take root. While there are no hover cars, aliens or magic, science is starting to enter a new age.As well, there are superbeings, both heroes and villains in the world (often as a result of the above new science). While not as common as in, say, the DC or Marvel universes, they still are present. Enough so that a major city would, in theory, only have one, maybe two, heroes protecting it.The reasoning for using Chicago was that it was a city strongly tied to organized crime in the past, it is one of the most famous US cities, it happens to be on the water, has warm/hot summers and cold winters and the city itself has a lot of personality to it. The variety in the seasons' weather was nice.(Featured picture by Banth, costume concept 2)
Main Character:Name: Alex FlynnAlias: MotionPowers: Absorption and manipulation of kinetic energy, usually through her hands and feet. Allows for an energy shield surrounding her body, concussive blasts from her hands and super strength. While she can't fly, at least at the start, she can use her hand blasts to propel herself like a rocket for brief periods of time.Weaknesses: Specifically her power supply's low stamina. While in contact with the ground, she refills her 'battery' constantly. Constantly applied force, like slashing, spearing or crushing, will drain her shield faster than she can recharge it. Bullets, who only contact at a small point, then expel their energy, are easily repelled. She also lacks total protection from the extreme cold, heat and electricity. She also does not have any formal hand-to-hand combat training.Personality: A slight dichotomy between her costumed self and her civilian self. While out of costume she tends to be outgoing with her own small group of friends but shy around newer people and/or large crowds, is loyal to those she cares about and is a people pleaser, sometimes to a fault. She is bright in the field of English but not so much in math or science. As Motion she is a lot more outgoing (though this takes time to develop), vigilant and, in general, keeps a lot of the compassion she has while out of costume. She feels guilty, feeling like she created many of her villains (and in some cases she may have unintentionally).Origins: She gained her power when a new reactor was being tested, based on drawing kinetic energy out of the earth. The reactor malfunctioned, motion saving her friend while, unfortunately, being unable to get away in time.History: Born to a middle-class Irish Catholic family, only child. She lived in Chicago all her life, rarely when on vacations and lived a somewhat average life. Her parents did not approve of her wanting to transition and, as such, they don't seek contact with her after she announced it shortly after graduating (though she was planning it for a long time before that). She worked for two years before going to college on a scholarship, though it didn't pay for everything, it did help.Reason: There are a few reasons why she dons her mask. Part of it is the thrill and admiration that comes with it, though those are only the upside. She also feels like she needs to use her powers to help others, if only because she nearly lost her own best friend in the reactor accident. As things progress, guilt over creating the villains that plague the city, either directly or indirectly, keeps her out on the street and rooftops. (Picture by Superwoman/Izanami, Alex out of costume)
The Rogues. For the most part, the rogues are all in the developmental stage. A brief description of some will follow, though they should be fleshed out later.-Ice themed villain. Female, Japanese roots. Absorbs thermal energy through her skin. Unfortunately this raises her core temperature higher. She wears a special suit made out of a new fabric that reduces heat transfer, reducing the heat she passively absorbs at all times, only leaving her with a sweltering heat. Can use an extreme vasodialator to lower her body temperature to increase the heat she can safely absorb.Fire themed villain. Hispanic, no powers. Expert welder and displays narcissistic tendencies. Created a suit of armor out of police riot gear and metal plates for protection. Wields a flamethrower mounted on each arm, thermite grenades and a napalm gun. Wears a faceplate, much like a metal, vintage goalie mask with welding goggles set into the eyes.-Electric themed. Caucasian, tall, thin, mused hair. Body is a superconductor and produces very small amounts of electricity, enough to tase people, cause excessive static cling and a magnetic field able to deflect bullets (never all at once). Can grab live wires and other electrical sources to effectively channel the electricity inside and boosts his power considerably, shooting lightning, powerful magnetism, etc. Good natured, anti-villain. Wears a green trechcoat, rubber pants and boots to keep himself ungrounded.-Chessmasters. Robotic AI program that went rogue. Initially wanted a family, so split itself into 6 to produce one, each with its own AI to grow, each housed in a robotic shell. The original program greatly enjoyed chess, the six robots then taking on the names King, Queen, Knight, Bishop, Rook and Pawn, each with their own personality and powers.-Diseased themed. Female. Result in a viral study designed to kill cancer. Subjects were homeless taken off the streets. Virus mutated in one woman, turning into a fluid transmitted (blood, saliva, sweat, open sores), deadly disease that destroys internal organs within an hour. Granted the woman increased clotting and healing rate (not Wolverine level, but above human), reduced pain sensitivity, the ability to digest most organic matter and her breath is a mild sedative. However, she's schizophrenic and rarely knows what she's really doing and is rarely at fault.Radiation themed villain. Female, Caucasian. Motion's double, except she gains power from certain kinds of radiation. Stronger, able to fly, explosive blasts from her hands instead of concussive. Her power source is harder to come by though, meaning that when she's spent, she's spent, unlike Motion, who gains her power from the kinetic energy from the ground or from siphoning it from another source. Likely suspect for framing Motion for things she didn't do as their powers are so similar.(Picture done by Banth, used to decide what kind of mask Motion should use)
Back again, with some more pencil sketches...First, here's Motion from behind and a potential way to illustrate the kinetic energy
>>27378And secondly here's designs for the Cold Villain and the Chessmasters
>>27379>>27378Appreciate you doing some of the pencil sketching in your free time, Fizz.Been hunting around for a couple other artists too who can do something like what Banth did, with color and final concept art.
>>27384Glad I can help out in some capacity... Sorry I can't offer more than scanned pencil sketches but that's all the materials I haveI need a Tablet BAD :(
>>27379Thinking about it, I think a robot with a face would be preferred, for expression. Perhaps something like a dome that has a projection of a face on the inside.
Sorry you're getting trolled to all fuck on 4chan's /co/. I'd like to help with the sketching and such, if I could.
>>27409Oh, wonderful. Do you have any samples of your work you could post?
I'll sketch an idea or two tonight, scan it later this week. The idea that this comic shouldn't be a soapbox is wrong. It SHOULD be a soapbox for the idea that not all comic heroes/villains have to be straight white males. I mean, if super powers happened in the real world, it would be quite random who got powers, so why couldn't there be a transsexual hero?Of coarse if this were the real world, there would probably be a lot of hate and prejudice toward motion from the public (if they knew she were transsexual) and from other heroes as well. So the comic shouldn't go out of its way to avoid these issues altogether. My feeling is "What if Grant Morrison were writing this?", he'd be all over the cultural impact of a transsexual hero. Of coarse, I'm no writer so don't let me tell you how to make it. Just adding a couple of cents.
>>27414I think the soapbox is that "A transsexual is just like everyone else, on the basic level. They want the same things and when you strip it away, they're no different than any other human being."Them getting superpowers would make them just like anyone else in their situation.
>>27414Oh, much appreciated. Do you have anything you've randomly sketched on hand so I could see your style?
http://mobius-one.deviantart.com/gallery/#/dxzxkvThat was mine from several years ago. I really need to update my DA with recent stuff.
What about Allies?
>>27422I was thinking that too. If you're going to create a comic book universe, it should probably have lots of characters and not just a few.I'm also thinking Motion's powers sound a lot like the Speed force. I'm gonna draw her running fast!
>>27423If you do would you mind putting the flash (Bart or Wally) in? I'm a bit of a Flash-fag.
>>27423Technically speed does work on kinetic force... except you have stuff like friction, muscle strain and turning/stopping to deal with too.
So...does Motion have a penis? Or is she transgender?
>>27439Transgender refers to a wide area of cross-gender events. Cross dressing, intersex and transsexual.Motion is transsexual, meaning she was born male as is transitioning to a woman. She is pre-op, meaning she hasn't had sexual reassignment surgery. So yes, she has a penis.
>>27440Okay that's what I was wondering. Time to draw some tasty 34!
>>27410well, i can't promise they'll all be this finished, but have some shellshocked tony stark fanart nonetheless.
>>27445... is that your art?
>>27446it is. it's a bit old by now. the last piece i polished enough to put anywhere was this one.
>>27449Very nice. I look forward to having you on the project.
Been out of town for a couple of days, saw this on /draw/. >>27355 on Friday before I went. Thought it is an interesting concept, though not quite with you on the way you go about it.Either way, was just looking for something to draw when I get back. Probably not something you are looking for, though it was fun. Also comparative face shape study with The Chess Master (might want to rethink the relationship between chess and ice power though).
Just on the Soapbox issue,If there isn't a bit of Soapboxing then there will always be an elephant in the room. I'm not for or against Transgenders, it's just anyone who reads Motion will think it's been done as a Soapbox. Other than that I'm loving this Idea and would like to help out where I can. I can't draw for two shits but I'm a decent writer.
>>27454I think the chess pieces have different powers than that above. Ice/electric/fire/disease/radiation are all human and the chess pieces have powers separate from those.
>>27454I really like the "M" shape for Motion's mask
>>27548I dunno, seems a little too 'sharp'. I like the op pic mask, though if we mixed both together it might look really good.
>>27454You're welcome to stay and continue sketching. Also, if you have an opinion about it, be it you agree or not, please voice it.And should anyone want to contact me to discuss specifics, especially about concept art, reach me on AIM ( thecomiceditor ).
>>27551What about a classic Domino/masquerade mask? Thoughts?
>>27554We have a sampling of the masks here: >>27369Generally, the most popular were 5, 6 and 7. So something mixing 5 and 7 together might be our best bets. That way we have a fair bit of her upper face covered and it offers an aesthetically pleasing 'solid' feel to the mask, instead of it looking like cloth.
>>27556I really like the one in the OP. Hmm I should probably start using a trip so I'm not just randomly posting.
>>27558>TripThis tends to be preferred so that we don't have 3 or 4 anons all posting, makes things difficult to distinguish who's saying what.
>>27559It would probably help if I didn't screw it up. Fucking apostrophes.
So who's the person most in creative control of Motion? Is it The Old OP? I only ask because, while I and others may have many story ideas, I also want to make sure these ideas are okay by the creator before I start drawing random stuff. Also for canon purposes, since if we all came up with our stuff independently, it would very quickly become contradictory.
>>27571I head the project, so you could say I run it. Generally, I try and take the collective opinion and condense it down and make a final decision based on that. The best way to describe my position in the comic is a writer/head editor. For the most part, any story ideas should be run through the group so I can take a look and see how it fits. Just so that the project stays together and people don't start making stories that actively work against the main one.So yeah, I check continuity and make sure everything flows right, be it by including ideas or pruning them.
Oh, to flesh out Alex's character a bit more, I was wondering on what her favorite things should be. Sports, movies, song genre, food, etc. Speak up and offer your opinions. My opinion-Sport: Not terribly into sports, but doesn't mind watching Baseball and Hockey-Movies: Comedy/Action, dislikes horror-Song genre: Classic rock-Food: I think it should be a given that she likes Chicago's famous deep dish pizza, but others should come up too.
I like the way DC has handled Batwoman and female Question being lesbians. It's apparent in the stories, but it's not the focus of the stories. I feel that Motion should try to emulate that. Therefore I propose something radical: what if the fact that Motion is transsexual isn't even mentioned until several issues into the series? It would just be one of those things we learn about her as the story progresses. The primary focus of the first issues should be to tell the origin of her powers and what she decides to do with them. We only learn about her "normal" life between plot points of the hero story.
>>27669Oh man, I'm getting visions of Wrigley Field getting invaded by Super Villians and Alex is in the stands then SUDDENLY! Chicago's Favourite gal coming in to save the day. Baseball puns everywhere but it would be gold.
>>27669Hmmm... In terms of baseball, I can see Alex being a casual softball player since where I come from they don't give a fuck what gender you are as long as you're goodAny thought given to the prospect of romantic interests?
>>27683I thought she could like a guy, but then that guy would turn out to work for a villain later or something. Like a real macho kind of guy. He'd never know she was Motion.
Sketches from earlier today...
...and from a bit before that.
>>27683I think we're going to keep romance off the table to start with.
>>27701Probably a good idea.Well, at least until we've finished fleshing out motion. Also, >>27700 Izanami, if these are only outlines I'm dying to see some finished products. Maybe I'm just a sucker for short-shorts, but these are pretty good.Oh! Names for fire themed villain: Enfuego, The Incinerator, The Pyronaut (I don't even like this one), Invicta (From the latin name of the Fire ant), Camaxtli/Mixcoatl. More will come of course but those are the ones I've been playing with so far. As for our icy Japanese mademoiselle I'm kicking around a few ideas but I'd like to know more about her reason/s she became a villain and maybe the Fire-man too if at all possible.
>>27711Home for lunch, so I'll give details.-Fire villain is a welder with a narcissist complex and a pyromaniac. When Motion came into the city's limelight he got the idea to earn the respect he felt he was deserved by doing the opposite as her, terrorizing the city.-- For his name, I'd like to use something Spanish and something that smells of arrogance.-The ice villain was a victim of an experiment accident. She can't turn her powers off and on, instead her body constantly absorbs heat from her surroundings, her naked skin reducing the temperature to below freezing. At the same time the heat she passively absorbs raises her core temperature. The end result is that she can't live without the suit, unless she's wanting to die of heat stroke. At the same time, the suit protects others from her bare skin, which would cause frostbite on contact.-- She became a villain simply because she no longer fits in, the accident has rendered her unable to have human contact, eat warm food or even bath with water. Her personality also has changed, due to living in basically an inescapable heat.I'm planning on sitting down with Izanami again and work on more concept sketches, probably tonight.
>>27727Camaxtli/Mixcoatl is a Aztec god of War and fire. I mean, what's more arrogant than naming oneself after a god? Concerning the Ice queen, there's actually a legend in Japan about and spirit called the Yiukionna. It's the ghost of woman who haunts the snow and lures men to their deaths. Only quasi-fitting but it's a start. I've got class for most of the day but I should be able to think of more during the day. If I'm not up to my ears in contractual bullshit.
>>27711I had an idea for Ice girl or Radiation girl. Follow me here for a minute: Perhaps there was some Mob boss opposed to the Kinetic Energy reactor for some reason or other, so he sent in a hired agent or mercenary(s) to sabotage it, which is the reason it explodes. Upon exploding it gives people powers. Motion is nearby when it explodes. I don't know how to twist that so she thinks she's responsible for creating her villains, but I like the idea of it. Maybe she only feels responsible for getting her friend killed because she asked him to meet her at the spot where he ends up dying. Just a thought. Also, I had an idea about her powers. What if she doesn't just absorb energy from the Earth like a capacitor. What if all kinetic energy fueled her? For instance, she'd absorb the energy of any bullets fired at her. The bullets would simply stop when they touch her and she'd store the kinetic energy as potential energy, to be expended at her choosing. She could also survive any fall by absorbing the energy of her impact with the ground. She'd be immune to projectiles, but energy weapons and explosions and fire still hurt her like a normal human. There should also be many ways of expending this energy. I like the idea of a temporary speed boost while running, making her a very light speedster. Also kinetic punches that can puncture steel. I'm afraid these abilities would seem to make her a higher power level than intended by the creator, but with villains tailored to her weaknesses and by slowly discovering these abilities over time, she could start out very weak and eventually end up a heavy hitter in the far future.

>Concerning the Ice queen, there's actually a legend in Japan about and spirit called the Yiukionna. It's the ghost of woman who haunts the snow and lures men to their deaths. Only quasi-fitting but it's a startNow I can't get the image of her giving some man responsible for her condition the kiss of death and thus suck all of his body temperature out of him out of my headAlso she could possibly close down her heat release vents in order to build up a cloud of steam for her to escape
>>27750>So more overpowered than superman in the end.Not necessarily. Certainly a JLA level player near the end of the series when she's a several years older (if it even progresses that far). She'd still be very vulnerable to a lot of things, just not kinetic energy rounds. Okay, so technically explosions are a form of kinetic energy, but they also generate that energy in all directions and use air as the medium for its concussive force, as well as generating a lot of heat. Motion is vulnerable to explosions because she can't absorb their kinetic energy easily (it's unfocused) and the heat burns her. I imagine her starting power to be extremely poor as her powers are not understood at all on any level, and certainly uncontrollable. Perhaps she needs some kind of mentor to teach her to use her abilities at some point?
>>27775>>27747crap, I forgot to trip those posts. It was me guys! Also sketching Motion right now. She is fun to draw!
>>27751Or melt some faces.
>>27552Well, I appriciate the egalitarian ideal at the conception of the character, though if we do this just because, this particular attribute felt tacked-on, but that's a small complaint. While personally I am more interested in her own personal journey on this aspect, I'll probably try doing that in my own work. I probably won't get much more involved, since the more I get into an idea, the more I want to go my own way, and take more creative control over it.
>>27782I think everyone is that way. When they contribute an idea, the thing sort of becomes "theirs" in their mind. That's why I asked who's in charge, because I think that's an important thing to respect. I'm happy just making concept art, but I also want this thing to be good, so I throw my 2 cents into the hat to try and push it in the (hopefully) right direction.
There is nothing stopping you from having an idea then uding it for youself somewhere else - it simply means you will have to create another identity that shares similar attributes. I intend on using the Masochist idea for myself as well, but as a redesign, but I think she would be good in a world like this one.
>>27743I think that mythology, while good for inspiration, often leads to poor names, mostly because they're a little wordy and because it requires you to typecast the villain to their race.If they're an immigrant, perhaps it'd make sense, but if not, it wouldn't really hold any significant value.
>>27848Understandable. Since he's a welder How about something like Torcher/Torchor, Kinda sounds like torture though... Let me know mon ami. I don't know whether it was intentional to have a fire themed rogue in Chicago or not, but still very clever.
>>27783Adding your thoughts, even if they use one, doesn't make it your project. It means you helped. It also doesn't mean they're required to use anything else you suggest.Projects work best when you have a small group, between one and four, in charge, with the others suggesting things and offering new ideas and opinions the core wouldn't have thought of.The moment the entire group tries to compromise is the moment the entire project falls apart due to lack of direction.
For the fire villain, why not "El Calor", which means "The Heat" in Spanish.
what if her bodysuit's orange's pieces have special fibers that glow depending on how much enegry she has? It would realy help in fights showing she's completely out of enegry for dramatic effect,or she could turn them off one fight to fool a villian into thinking she's out of enegry.>>27782 gave me this idea, the orange peices are grey when completely out of enegry. The jacket is differant,it's just orange.
Well, I'm a writer. A bit of a writer. I fancy myself one. You might have seen some of my work on /x/. Creepy-stories aside however I also happen to be, well, trans-ish. I say -ish- because I am unable to ever become anything near female due to things far beyond my control. But I am transgender, I know what it's like to struggle with gender-identity and things like that. I would dress up, given the opportunity, and do actively wear makeup and act naturally, that is naturally for myself, which is a bit too femmy for some tastes. (Though it convinces no-one haha)I'd toss in my two cents immediately, but the current theme of the thread seems a bit tense and hostile.
might she also like jazz?
>>28189She has an aura around her body that is used to display how her power levels are. Now, if its a solid construct and cracks/chips based on how much punishment she takes is another matter.I do thank you for your suggestion, its an interesting idea.>>28191This thread or the /co/ one? Because this one is, at least from my perspective, far from hostile.>>28192I have no problem with that. Though I'm no jazz expert.
Ah, perhaps hostile isn't the right word to use. I simply meant the whole conversation going on about how ideas are not the property of their owners, but the property of the project they are being used in, etc. Ah, maybe -exclusive-? But that also seems like a poor word-choice.
>>28191Yeah... I'm not getting the hostile vibe at all. Personally I'd love to hear your two cents getting a new set of eyes on the project, especially ones that are closer to the character, are always welcome. Remember though, we're really not going for a soapbox thing here. Maybe a gradual one but nothing so brazen as to say "I'm Trans-gender! Deal with it!" in the first issue.
>>28194Character concepts generally belong to the creators. However, if you take a concept (like the main heroine) and use it yourself, then that becomes an issue.Offering something to the project is nice and, if its used, becomes part of the comic. As such, the character might not -stay- yours as tinkering might be done with it, history may be changed, the story might phase them out, etc. When people use their own characters, they often have an attachment to them, which makes putting them into stories difficult. This is why coming up with concepts made purely for the comic, with no baggage, is best. Its not a matter of "no, its mine", its about not wanting to have a power struggle when somebody's character goes a way they don't like.
>>28195We already have a handful of transsexual people working on the project, I think. Not to say that the newcomers aren't welcome, just that we already have the point of view :P
>>28196Haha, I completely understand, I didn't mean to come off as judgemental or anything. Anyway, I'll review the thread so far and see if there's anything I think I can add.
>>28197
Also, the /co/ thread. Keep it going with discussion if you want.http://boards.4chan.org/co/res/17623052
>>28200I don't think the word "Tasteful" registers with them.
>>28201Lets not get into that, shall we?
Throwing my hat into 'I might write something' ring. This project has some real legs - I'll give the thread a read and see what I can throw together.
This has probably been suggested a million times, and is already slightly covered in the Ice Enemy field, but perhaps a villain whose power/tech allows them to emit a sort of adhesive? Seems like that would be a major threat to a character who is based on gaining and exerting kinetic energy. Yes/No? I will make a character concept if the idea hits any bells.
>>28205It wouldn't really be that big a threat I think. If motion can get energy from the ground she always has access to her fuel supply.
>>28206But, and I suppose I might need further lesson on Kinetic energy and the definition which is used within this comic, a immobile object cannot exert force, even if she can still draw it. And if said foe is able to in any way insulate Motion from the ground, she is then cut off from her power source. Also a -goo-, we shall say, based character would be able to overwhelm her shields through sheer force of contact. If the character itself was turned into this substance, say ala Clayface, that would present an even further challenge, as brute-force would be useless against them, and Motion would have to get creative to contain them.I am just throwing out ideas though.
>>28207The idea has merit. I'd like to point out that human beings have kinetic energy while staying still. Their arms move, which has kinetic energy.Motion gains her power by drawing in kinetic energy, storing a small bit inside her and using it to power her energy shield/aura. The aura itself is what protects her, gives her strength and her 'bolts' are essentially solid, concussive force she fires. So if she was standing still, her body would still be wrapped in the shield, allowing her all her powers. The way to get through it is to A) keep Motion airborne while damaging her shield or B) apply a constant force. The reason behind this is that her 'battery' is constantly recharging but has little capacity. Separating her from the ground means she's left with only a small amount of energy to use and/or applying a constant force (stabbing, slashing, crushing) drains the shield constantly, faster than it can replenish the battery (unlike bullets, which strike a small point and expend all their energy in a split second, a knife applies force over a more spread over area and can be held there for longer).
>>28208Then I think that this might be able to work. I understand the technology-level of the setting, so I will ask how do you feel about someone who is chemically turned into a monster? Or not a monster so much, but a manifestion. Think, again, of perhaps Clayface. Would that be too far-fetched in this setting?
>>28210Anything -could- work. The purpose is to throw out ideas and work with them. If we like the final result we can save it for a future rogue, one shot or a character. If we don't, we may revisit. The issue is that we need to make it distinguishable from characters like Clayface, Sandman, Inque and Hydroman.
Alright thenRouge: WIP Name(Drip)During a preliminary outing, Motion inadvertently set about a chain of events that led to a tenement in a low-income part of ton being set ablaze. While most of the families were evacuated, one floor, on the far side, was trapped and unable to escape the blaze. A younger (say upper teens. 16-17?) girl, having just witnessed her father burning alive in his own bed, jumps in desperation from her window, a fall that would normally kill her.Heavy expansion in the city, and an unscrupulous mayor, had led to the refuse from the reactor accident that caused Motion's powers to be buried under the outlaying foundation behind the girl's house. Upon splattering on the ground (so tasteless) the waste seeps into her bloodstream, reanimating her...as best it can. Because of her bodies mostly liquid state at the time, it is mostly substituted with a seething mass of sticky gunk.As she was clinically dead for a few minutes before being reincarnated as Drip her brain had time to decay. Because of this she is mentally unhinged, and is mostly motivated by a burning desire to get rid of both Motion and the other rogues, all of whom she blames for her accident. Her powers initially are simply to morph and expel her body-mass's worth of goo in rudimentary ways, overwhelming and consuming her foes. Eventually she might learn to do such things as become so dispersed that she is un-noticeable on the ground, etc. She might even go so far as to learn how to stabilize her body enough to mimic animals, humans, and even inanimate objects. However, her properties would keep her from being all that incognito. The smell of rot follows her, and while later on she might learn to change her scent (maybe even integrating into Motion's college to toy with her private life?), it usually gives her away in even her best disguise. You might not know what she is, but you know she is there. To make her more menacing she could perhaps learn to dissolve other material to add to her own body-mass, and to balance this only be able to add so much as she can control, and using massive amounts of material is impossible for her and causes her to break down.
I thought the Ice villain was supposed to be Cambodian or from some other South Asian country. Isn't Japanese overdone? Just saying.
>>28214Motion's best friend's family is going to be from the southern area of Asia. That maybe who you're thinking of. Vietnamese or Thai, I forget which one we said.
>>28216I thought I'd read it in the description for the first character design.
>>28213Well, some issues with this are that it feels much like Inque and Sandman. Sandman was created from a science accident, Inque was created by chemicals, Clayface too. Also, clinically dead for a few minutes would lead to mental retardation, not psychosis.A different approach could be the use of new "nanobots" that one controls with a neural interface. Perhaps used to clean up oil spills and other hard to clean up accidents, they can integrate with the matter, move and shape it, all at a safe distance. An accident kills the operator and the person's consciousness takes form in the nanobots. He or she now isn't limited to just one form of matter, but all sorts of loose material, like dirt, water, oil, mud and sand.
>>28218Well, that all being true, I think the same could be said of most any superhero/etc. you try to make. Who hasn't heard of the science-accident, the man-from-beyond-the-stars, the radiation mutation, etc? Those are sort of unavoidable.I like your idea about the nano-machines. However, wouldn't that make her a bit to over-powered? There's really no way to stop nano-machines. As soon as a malevolent force entered them they would reproduce infinitely and turn the world into grey-goo within minutes. It seems a bit implausible to make a rogue out of such a powerful construct.
>>28219Nano machines would, in theory, be damaged by electricity and a variety of containment measures could be used.In theory again, not all nanobots would be able to reconstruct matter. If these ones were only programmed to move around matter and, perhaps, break down specific types of material for self replication, you have a distinct boundary. That's always the plus when dealing with non-AI machinery, they're limited by what they're programmed to do.
>>28221True, but as soon as a nano-maching is reprogrammed by the conciousness of a rogue, they could -reprogram- them to take out all their locks on certain types of matter. My point isn't that nano-machines won't work, I was just pointing out that you can't point a logic flaw such as -Brain dead can't come back- if you allow logic-flaws in your own ideas haha. This is a creative endeavour, afterall, a little leeway should be made.Alright, let's combine the two. When the girl jumps to her death she is assaulted by a group of nanomachines that are perhaps made to dispose of filth on the sidewalks that have made a bit of a bug in their programming? Or maybe they are demolition Nanos that are destroying an adjoining lot? She is consumed by them and, somehow, her personality and thoughts are imprinted into them?Maybe, because of her shifting nano-machine "hive brain" that would explain why she is psychotic? Perhaps she could call herself a deviation of Nanomachine. "Nana" (pronounced like the teasing "nah nah nah nah nah")
>>28219That is sort of the problem when it came to the villains we came up with already.Take the ice based villain for example. You have two routes to go with, machine assisted (Mr Freeze, Captain Cold) or natural/biological (Iceman, Killer Frost). In fact, our frost villain is very close to Killer Frost's power because KF is the only ice based villain to follow the laws of thermodynamics (in that you can't add cold to something, only take away heat to freeze it). What makes ours different is that our villain suffers because of her power, the fact that her abilities are not as honed (such as she can't create 3d objects out of ice within a short period of time) and she really is a sympathetic character (I'd hope).Same with the fire based villain, two routes; machine assisted (Firefly, Heatwave) or biological (Pyro, Volcana). The difference between ours and the two big machine based fire villains is in the weaponry. Another is that I'd like for the character to grow and upgrade, to the point where he's in an Iron Man like power suit that shoots fire, giving him the strength to match Motion.
>>28223That's also what I was trying to do. Like you said, it's hard to avoid comparisons to other characters. It's hard to make someone stick out from power alone, it's more what you do with the character. I think Drip being more of a psychological threat, someone who tries to infiltrate and destroy Motion's personal life (and the fact that she can alter/destroy the very ground out from under Motion's feet), would make her an interesting villain for Motion, disregarding that she is similar to other characters. And again, making her sympathetic. Obviously we wouldn't be condoning the methods, but like other great villains such as Mr. Freeze as you mentioned, you can -understand- to an extent where they are coming from. You can relate to their heartbreak, even if you can't relate to what they do with that heartbreak.Making this character (I sort of had something you mentioned earlier in the thread in mind, the idea of feeling guilt for making your own foes) a by-product at Motion's attempts at good would help drive both the characters emotionally and developmentally. On the ability side there is a lot of places you can go with a character made of mutating substances, whether it be nano-machines or organic gunk, as I mentioned in my first proposal.
>>28225While it may be a jumping off point, also keep in mind we have a sympathetic, vile villain in place too.
>>28226Well I would hope that most all of, if not the entire, Rogue's Gallery would be at least partially sympathetic. A villain who is a villain just for the sake of it is very hard to pull off with any sort of strength.
