The time is upon us, /co/mrades

ITT: discussion for starting our own channel, consisting of the various creative /co/mrades around the world who will work and strive to revive the spirit of cartoons that still lives in all of us.

So do I..

So how are we going to make these cartoons? are we going to use flash or try to use older methods (although the older methods take FOREVER)

also how are we going to organize this? we should probably make our own forum because an imageboard would only work for so long.

We should follow the Cartoonstitute's idea. We take some people who are used to writing and some who are used to flash or whatever medium they are better at and have them get together and make something awesome. There are plenty of examples of great flash mini-series people made on the cheap and are still extremely popular

I think we should try some new animators though.. like we can host script ideas on the site, then we can have the artists of the site try and make mock ups, then from that have people do some voice samples, if we like them we use them, and then have people animate it from that, whoever's we like best, gets it..

I don't know, that may be too community oriented for some.. and i don't know if anything i just typed makes any since..

I've always had this idea for a short animation/comic about a young man and a bipedal walrus who are stranded on a floating island with a lighthouse and trying to rebuild a bi-plane to escape. I always sort of pictured it with a Victorian aesthetic.

If people are going to start submitting their own artwork and ideas, and seeing as how this is 4chan and a common issue around the board, I'd like to address this now.

Please, PLEASE no "furfaggotry biased" garbage. Anthropomorphic animals are a classic storytelling element and really help personify the characters sometimes, especially in fun friendlier stories. I would despise seeing someone with an idea for a cartoon but as soon as he says something like "so it would be these little bipedal mice that wear clothing who live in this lady's basement" he gets flooded with "LOL FURRY YIFF IN HELL".

Respectively, I would also hate seeing anthropomorphic animals that add nothing to the plot other than the fact that they're animal people. Their animal features should be respective of their personalities a la Robin Hood or should just be animals humanized to identify with them a la Secret of NIMH. There should be a REASON for the anthros, not just for the sake of cosmetics.

One is a series about aliens who team up to defeat an evil force in the galaxy. It begins with one alien, who loses his job and runs away from the plan his parents have for him. After running into some space pirates, he crash lands on a small, abandoned planet. There, he discovers an ex-henchman of the space pirates, jettisoned after rebelling against his superiors. Realizing they have a common enemy, they decide to team up and try to defeat the space pirate menace.

Haha, I made that /co/-productions logo. That's pretty awesome that it's still being passed around.

I made a short intro animation as well using that logo. I'll upload it once my laptop comes in from the repair shop, which will hopefully be by Tuesday. If people do actually make some sort of animation, it could be used as a header. Eventually, I want to make a 3D animation of the logo.

I would love to make an animation with you guys. I'm making something over 20(24?) weeks, starting after labor day. It will be a 3D animation. What it will be about, I'm not sure. I'm still trying to come up with an idea. But I'll be happy to provide updates on my work as it goes along, since feedback is always great to have.

But yeah, if you guys want to truly make some cartoons, whatever you do, don't go overboard. Make shorts, don't plan for series. Make them no more than 7 minutes. Actually, they shouldn't even be longer than 3 minutes. And even that's pushing it. 1 minute and 30 seconds might be the best amount of time. As a rule, if you're making a script for your short, each page you write equals one minute of screentime, take or give some (if you're using the right format anyway). Be sure to go through the entire process; do some sketches, draw storyboards: pre-production is integral to whatever you are going to do.

I'm sure there are other animators in this thread, so I may be giving useless advice, but if you want to make something and aren't going to school for it, or doing animation professionally, you may want to get some additional resources.

For some great examples of characters animation, go to http://www.11secondclub.com
You can browse the entries, or even enter the monthly contests.
I would also suggest getting "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams, which you can get for about $20 from Amazon.

Somebody made a forum, and that's great. Remember, feedback, is the best thing you can get. I don't know how effective it is to have members of an animation team being so far apart, and relying on the internet for communication. If a bunch of you guys are getting together to make something, someone will have to be in charge and enforce deadlines. Deadlines will be integral if anything is going to get done.

And there is a good chance that like many /co/ projects, this will fall apart after a couple of days. It is hard to devote time to something like this when you're not getting paid for it, you aren't going to school for it, and especially when it might take weeks or months to get something done.

I'm looking forward to it though. I'll definitely be happy to update on my progress at least.

Let's just call my first idea "Project Space".
One of the major aspects of PS is the interaction of the aliens with humans. In this series, aliens are already on Earth, but in disguise. The coalition of all the planets have no idea how to reach out to us, as we are relatively isolated in the universe. So, things are in limbo. However, with the technology aliens have, they are able to disguise themselves as humans, and businesses exist to transport aliens to Earth for vacations and other activities.

With all of this secrecy, not one alien has been known to have interacted with humans in any significant manner.
This brings me to the one human main character in the entire cast. He is warped onto an alien planet and held captive by a wealthy creature until the two main characters rescue him. After they acquire a translator, which all sentient aliens wear, he joins the crew. He has to be disguised among strangers, though.

From the writethread on /co/.

"America and the re-instated USSR have practically destroyed the entire world for the remaining resources on Earth. The US founded a large city in Africa once it was completely devoid of sentient life as to try to have the remaining civilians stay alive.

Since they have anyone with any combat experience on the front lines fighting for fresh water, oil and other resources, they pretty much have the cities watch themselves. With commercialized weapons, armours and pretty much anything to fight a war with, the city has been over run by drug dealers, high crime rates, and increasing UFO paranoia.

A college graduate, who happens to be the one of the few survivors of his generation after a dealer raid on the entire, last college of mankind, sets off with his friend, major in Computer Science and Programming to design his own wares as to fight off part of crime off the city streets.
Not as vengeance, but because that day he survived through was a revelation that if the war doesn't kill humanity, they kill themselves from the inside.

He sets off as a vigilante, and goes through numerous things such as:
-Corrupt dealer running for public leader.
-Both said dealer and his actions placing him as Public Enemy #1
-Fighting off his henchmen.
-A blast from the past that pretty much doomed the survival of mankind, which could be his fault.

I've been putting a shiteload of heat into this, and I'm putting this out there.
You people are lucky I trust you.

Any suggestions, any problems with it, any questions, just say so."

No.16061
So, my idea goes like this.
The show or whatever starts with usually a nameless group of soldiers and one hero that later on becomes noticeable. But at first, he is just another nameless soldier. His group later on gets captured, which really pisses him off, especially after he is left dead by a nazi, that just tells him to run away.
The story can be easily continued form there. But this is just off the top of my head to start out the story in a different manner from just showing his background. I want him to be nameless until you can truly gain some sort of bond with him. Like, he tells someone his name when you think he is about to die.
Either that, or just some super epic war going on with the main hero already known, but not by the army. You see him rise in the show.

Pitch 3: Ben's Book of Banned Beasts!

Benjamin Roland Vasquez is playing with his best friend Erin when a magic book falls from the sky. Ben keeps it, but doesn't realize the book is a historical log of all imaginary and mythological creatures in human history, and it has a tendency to leak it's contents. Ben is forced to protect the book and return the creatures to it when they escape. Fortunately, his firend Erin is the toughest little girl in the world, and a 2000 year old ancient lizard god from the book, named Karma, cuts a deal to help them out. Now the three of them have to keep the book secret from the town, including Ben's cryptid obsessed grandmother and Erin's bumbling MiB style father.

Also of note, Karma is bound to the children, and their behaviour adjusts his form and shape. (Ben over-eating makes Karma get fatter, for example). Ben is a coward, and Erin is hugely into Death Metal.

This project was in the top ten of the platinum studios comic book challenge, I would have won if I'd of had as much publicity as the others did. :(

I agree and I disagree. Kids, yes, but more than that. One of the reasons kids turn to Japanese media is because there aren't enough varied cartoons and comics for teenagers. Not little kids, or manchildren - teenagers.

Surely there's a niche there just itching to be catered to? Look at the shit that /co/ jerks off to that isn't anime - the majority of it is superhero comics and cartoons, with the odd JohnK ripoff or Canadian Flash cartoon. Why can't we do cartoons and comics about all kinds of things like hospital drama, or sports action, or comedy whereever you can place it? You can pick any number of histories or interests and get a good story out of them, even putting totally unrelated sources together if you can. Hell, you could do comics about completely obscure but legit shit - Carl Barks and Don Rosa did that all the time with their Scrooge/Donald comics.

I dunno, I'm rambling at this point. The point is, this is a potentially huge opportunity to inject some life into the webcomic/animation market. Maybe that's aiming too high? Should we really let that stop us? Should we just say 'fuck that shit' and just have FUN with our ideas?

These ideas are fantastic! All of them, would make both great animations or webcomics.

I personally like the squire idea the best. I think it lends itself to a fantastic setting.

The trick here is to pick an idea that we can make a very short story about. We really, really don't want to overextend ourselves right out of the gate. It will kill us. And I don't know if collaboration is going to be practical at this point. We have people interested, for sure, but it might be hard to keep that interest.

Regardless, I think a really great, short animation can be made out of that squire idea. That's just what I think.

Pitch 4: Cosmic Dash

My webcomic, while progress is slow, I think it has some great potential. It's a space opera the features exotic locals, shifting allegiances, a galaxy still being explored, and some inherent action comedy. From my synopsis:

"Cosmic Dash concerns the adventures of the various individuals associated with the primary protagonist, Dash Kameku. While this usually concerns adventures and events he is involved in, it is not exclusively devoted to him, and other points of focus are prevalent. The mood of the series is one of anticipation, looming tensions following a war, and extragalactic approaching force, and general uncertainties about what else lies beyond the Silver-Spiral Galaxy.

The series is heavily action-focused with a comedic edge to it. The majority of the episodes are stand-alone, but often feed into a further theme set for each season. There are more extended episodes as well, but these are certainly more complex in their goals than the typical stand-alone episodes, and generally cover big events in continuity."

Another idea I had is a miniseries called "Puppets".
It's about the story of a mob boss heir and his puppet, which contains the soul of an assassin.

The story goes as follows; the son of a mob boss becomes a puppeteer, to the chagrin of the "family". On the day of his first big show, he learns that his father is going to be attending. However, he doesn't know that an assassin will be there, too. The mob boss is almost successfully killed by him until another assassin kills the first assassin, and then kills the mob boss. The soul of the first assassin, in confusion, ends up possessing the puppet.

The miniseries would detail the puppeteer and his puppet doing his gigs whilst trying to solve the mystery of his father's assassination.

No.16398
Okay, I made a post on the forum titled "Tips and Advice for the /co/llective Benefit" in the Discussion section, and I thought it wouldn't hurt to repost it here.

Consider this boot camp.

[Where do we stand at the moment]
As far as I can tell, as we stand right now, we are simply a loose collective of individuals, under no real leadership, with a single shared goal. A goal that is certainly attainable, but one that does require a fair amount of time and effort. Just the right amount of time and effort to get people riled up in excitement, with cheers of "We can do this! We can do this!"...until the real work begins, and everything falls apart.

Let me make this clear.

This could take take a lot work. Work that, unless you are doing this professionally or for school, could be hard to follow through with. Amateur animation takes lots of personal motivation. It can be hard to fit in time to animate with a paying job, school, and/or friends and family to deal with. It can be easy to loose focus and ultimately forget about the project altogether. We are certainly not unfamiliar with this chain of events. Nearly all of the grandiose projects the /co/llective likes to attach themselves to have failed, either because of lack of focus, or the willpower to keep working.

Those are the obstacles to our success. I will touch upon them again, in the future.

[Our Power Structure and How to Work Within In It]
As far as I can tell, we are in a blessed state of anarchy. This can be terrible for productivity. But at the moment, I think it's the best we can hope for.

Here's what I propose...Or really, here's what I think we can do under the circumstancez.

We can't work on a single idea. It will be almost impossible to rally behind one single idea unless we have a director that we can all agree to work under. And even then, there might be people who want to do something else. So it will be best if we kept multiple independent productions going.

Writers and animators can pair up with each other if they so choose. I like that idea. A team of three, involving a writer, an animator, and a concept/background artist might be even better. But the brunt of the work in these animations will have to depend on the animators. Animators, it will truly be up to you. If you think you can work with another animator and you feel you can trust him or her to do their share of the work, feel free to do so. But otherwise, keep your productions independent from another. Take an idea under your wing and run with it.

The one thing that we CAN all collaborate on is critiques.

Here's my proposal: Animators, once you have decided on your idea (and if you decide on pairing up with someone) your writing partner(s) and/or your artist(s), make a thread in Discussion (because there really is no board set up for critiques and general project updating at the moment). In the subject line of your first post, your first word should be "Project:" so we can identify the type of thread that it is. The rest of the subject line should involve the title of your animation, your name, and the names of the people you are working with. Finally, the last part of the subject line should involve the date of your last update.

So for example, if I had finally decided on an idea to animate and wanted to work with a writer named Admiral and an artist named Private, I would make the following post:

"Project: FunkyCoolAnimationTitle by Commander, Admiral and Private, updated 9/4"

This should be the thread that you centralize all the information in for your project, all of which should be added only to the first post. Tell us what week you are in, the date, and any progress you wish to share.

So for example, in the body of your first post, you might have...

"This is the official post for FunkyCoolAnimation. Animated by Commander, Written by Admiral, with artwork by Private. It is a story involving the man called Funky going on a personal journey to start being cool. He of course, fails horribly.

8/12 Week 1
OH GOD WHAT ARE WE DOING?! WHAT IS THIS?! I DON'T EVEN--

8/19 Week 2
Okay, we have our script. Here it is! (link) Tell us what you think please.

8/28 Week 3
We really didn't do much this week! Aaah, we suck so much balls.

9/4 Week 4
We got some character sheets done! And we started to do storyboards. Here's some of our work!"

Replies to your thread should be critiques from the entire community; artists, animators, writers, voice actors...EVERYONE. Honest, constructive critiques are not only helpful, but they also give a taste to what the professional field of animation is like. Be brutally honest if you have to. No one will improve with sissy remarks.

I said I would get back to those two biggest obstacles of ours, so listen to what I'm saying. To those making the posts, the best thing you can do for yourself is update your thread every week. Even if you haven't done anything. It is so easy to decide to put off something for one week and then forget about it entirely. If you keep updating your thread, not only will we know where you stand on your project, but we can also provide that all important encouragement for you to keep at it.

[Tips for Making A Successful Animation]

I think I will make a more extensive tip guide in the animation section, but here are some basic guidelines for everybody to consider

DON'T OVERDO IT!

I've looked over some of the ideas. And they are really great. Some of them are really extensive however. And that's a big problem.

The worst thing you can do for yourself is to overreach with your idea. Keep it small. Keep it simple. The average time for an animation has historically been 7 minutes. Don't go over this time limit. Really, you should be doing only 3 minutes, and even that's pushing it. For anyone who has never done an extended production like this before, I would stick to to a time limit of 1-1/2 to 2 minutes.

Think about it. If you're using a traditional animation style, you will be drawing at least 12 frames every second. 12 x 120 seconds? That will be 1,440 individual frames for a two minute cartoon. And you will (I hope) be also coloring all those frames as well. Of course, there are ways to cheat, but still, it's a lot of work.

For our writers? Remember, as a general rule, one page in a script equals about one minute of screentime. If you are using the proper format. So keep the scripts short, and succinct.

If you really want to extend yourself and push everything to the limit, that's fine by me. We're not working with deadlines here. Just remember, usually the longer something takes, the more difficult it is the keep up the motivation.

DO PRE-PRODUCTION

I will touch upon this more extensively in a future post in the animation section. But basically make sure you don't waste any time and effort. Do sketches, thumbnails, and layouts. Write your script and get your voice actors to record for you. Before you start animating, you should have everything planned out and ready to go. There is a proper way to do these things, that have been developed over years of animation history in order to make things easier for you.

What you will ultimately want to do is make storyboards. You will then turn those storyboards into an animatic. You will use this animatic as the starting point for the real animation. Each section of animation you get done with will be inserted in the animatic. And then, you can post the updated animatic for us to critique and comment on.

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE DOING ANIMATION

You know CAD threads? You know how we constantly make fun of Buckley's love affair with words? I'm so glad that we do that.

There is nothing wrong with dialogue heavy pieces, no. However, remember that you are doing animation. Remember what makes animation unique. Dialogue heavy scenes are more apt for live action productions (Think Pulp Fiction). What animation is more suitable for is action. Why have a character speak his feelings when he can act them out? Why have long sections of dialogue when you can describe actions that define character relationships just as well. A teacher of mine used to caution us against the talking head syndrome (basically Pulp Fiction). Make your characters move while talking. Use creative camera angles. Do everything to keep your cartoon visually stimulating. (Think Samurai Jack, although, you don't have to go to that extreme).

To our writers, I'm not trying to stifle you. Just remember what medium we are in. A paragraph of action can serve very well for us.

I will try to list more tips, as well as a rundown for the production of a cartoon in the animation section. Give me some time on that one.

[Closing]

Here's the end of Boot Camp. I hope everyone gets to read this. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to reply. I'm sure I only touched upon a dozen of everyone's concerns.

I want this project to succeed. I hope it really does.

There are a lot of great ideas in here. I like the Steampunk WWII, but I think some short animations should be made first. Stretch those muscles, gain some organisation and such.

There are some neat ideas for simple and funny short animations in this thread:
http://co-productions.hostzi.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2

Although the above "boot camp" states that efforts ought to be divided, I honestly think a unified front would work best at first.

Let's consider "Kid Stubblebrush" from the thread I mentioned above. If we could get various folk to submit scripts for it and have hpkomic do character design and have GeneralIvan do the voices, I think we could come up with a neat first animation. If we leave our efforts divided, though, we could have a lot of elements made without a completed production.

You need to join hands on this. The difficulty is that, in unifying something, we have to have some level of direction.
But there's nobody here whose innate skills raise them to the bar of leadership, so I say we be democratic about it.

I think everybody can agree that something small has to be done at first. So, find a story you'd like to do, vote on a script, vote on a team to produce the cartoon, create the cartoon and then stream it for all to enjoy under the title of first CO Productions cartoon.

My vote:
-Kid Stubblebrush.
-hpkomic for character design.
-GeneralVan for voices.

On another topic, I like this idea for a cartoon:

And, with this next idea, I'm aware I'm going otherworldly. And maybe even a tad similar to my other idea.

A hit fantasy novelist talks to music. He's like 70. Yeah, strange.
But it's sort of revealed in flashback. How suddenly music started to speak to him around the age of thirteen. How rock and pop tracks spoke to him as you'd try to have an intellectual conversation with a Lady Gaga fan.

He writes stories by the million, filling his room with pages of stories. All while listening to a fuckload of songs. Like, the kind of song which uniqueness would astound you.
His stories all depended on the kind of music he heard. The more fantastical and magical it was, the more his stories were. As slow, grim but magestic the songs were, the more he was like that.

...But early into this, he's treated by his parents as an insane child. They tried medicating him, which I'd also like to introduce a small message about how american drug companies have their children drugged. And how it's killing every strand of creativity the world has.

The music was telling him stories. It wanted him to tell those stories to the world. And he did so for them. They had this bizarre bond.

Suddenly, music starts to detiriorate. The creativity in the world IS ending there no longer are as many artists that make music that inspire him. That tell him stories. That he knows anymore as if they were people.
Once old, the man has a mansion. He lives alone, he is lonely. But he keeps every room full of records. CDs, tapes, vinyls... He names each one. He gives them a name and a story title based on the conversation he's had with each one.

But as I was saying. As the music deteriorates in quality. He hears the last song to have come out to have ever talked to him. He can no longer hear music. Only pop. Only what everyone else hears. He is saddened because of what has happened with the love for the art the world had.
He decides to make his final opus his "first." He writes for himself, a recollection of all that has happened throughout his life. Everything. How he felt about music, how he felt about the world.

He dies while he's on the phone with his publisher confirming it was going to be the biggest book release literature has seen.
His work was done. That last book inspires everyone to follow art. To forget the system that for so long decided to keep their artistic side at bay. Musicians' minds were reborn. Writers flew among the clouds. Painters rode within their creations.
Eyes were graced, hearts were touched, minds were ignited again.

Suddenly, everything his house had, every bit of music, began to speak again. Everyone heard his music as he had heard it speak. The man had transcended and was going to be remembered as the writer than changed the world. The writer than told the tales that music sung into his ears and heart.

...
...I've really been wanting to put my heart into this.
Sad part is? I think I'm suffering the same effects as my writer. A song told me this story.

Saddest part, I think I'm going insane. I cried imagining all this. As I said, I'm going insane. I don't know why the hell I started shedding tears.

Wow. I actually really like this idea. As I read, I imagined the ending to have just lots of shots of people reading or listening to music in different places with voices speaking in the background, telling the stories. I think this would work well with the main character narrating the whole way through, but that's just me.

My God, can you imagine what we could do with that? How awesome it would be for a private consortium of citizens to own an animation studio?

(Is "consortium" the word I want to use here? "conglomerate"? "non-traded company"? I don't really know. Still, picture it.)

Thisfag here. I'm still interested. Would be happy to whip up a few concepts or scripts should we require them. Anything you guys like. Wakfu-esque fantasy, surreal stuff in the vein of Rocko's Modern Life, something with a more noir bent to it (I've actually got this one neat little project about a private detective that is also a luchador). Heck, I can go up to Pixar and Ghibli-level stuff if need be.

newfag here (to /co/ at least). Would definitely be interested in this, can do voice acting and script editing (I'm not so confident a writer myself, I'm definitely a lot better at cleaning up other people's stuff). Maybe writing in the future, or premise/story concept work (again though, not confident in from-scratch writing or reliable drawing abilities).

No.28863

Sure. A small plot. One-shot thing.
We can take, I dunno.. a scene from the Scott Pilgrim comic? Since it's the most naturalistic thing that also goes into "extreme" territory, I think it'd fit fine.

No.28864
>>28863

Now it's posts like this that make me question how this board's members can even dress themselves.

Please read back what you just wrote. You are suggesting that we, for a radio play, take a scene out of a comic. A radio play, which works on sound with no visuals, being made out of something from a comic, a silent medium that relies on visuals.

Do you see the problem now? I can see you're trying to be wonderfully /co/ relavent here and are probably thinking 'we can adapt it', but...really? And I'm being kind, as I'm not even going to go into about how Scott Pilgrim is hot-topic at the moment.

I am asking; why don't we just take a radio play SCRIPTand do a radio PLAY in the short-term while we work on something original, and if we can't even do that, then I think that's all that needs to be said regarding any creative endeavours. If we can't even do something already 70% done for us, then we haven't a hope in hell of actually doing ANYTHING from scratch, radiowise, comicwise...anywise.

No.28868

Not a better idea necessarily. But certainly as legitimate and valid as yours, in my opinion.

Every few scenes are entirely dialogue driven. There are visual moments, as the medium suggests, but it's still doable for a radio play.

Then I hope you're looking forward to never getting to voice act, because I can't see anyone stepping up to adapt it. I can't see anyone stepping up to do anything. Ideas, ideas...where do ideas get you? Nowhere. You can't focus on ideas.

And WHILE I'm lambasting everything; Voice-acting? Can anyone give me some examples of their talent? Can anyone just RECORD something that doesn't reek of cheap-ass microphone static? Can the shout without it being distorted? Because if they can't then there's going to be some serious problems come radio-play time.

>I hope you're looking forward to never getting to voice act
Too late to say "never." Done that.
Professionally, too. Nothing notable, but I blame that on my lack of ambition in the field.
Unless you meant in this project specifically.

No.28871
>>28870

The project in-specific, though I'm glad to hear that at least someone here who wants to do voice-acting actually has some experience in the area. It just strikes me that most people who say it just offer their services because they have nothing else to do and think it'd be easy enough.

As for my experience with radio plays, I have at least some scarce. My teacher in university had written a number, and gave us a fair amount of advice and examples concerning them. On top of my other writing, I think it's enough to give me a solid grasp of the medium...and if not, he's only an e-mail away. Mayhaps I should ask him if he knows a good place to get scripts from, but I'm at least going to try and look for some myself, first. The library, perhaps.

As for recording, my best friend is on a media studies course at Lancashire University (yeah I know) and has access to their recording studio, so there isn't a problem for decent recordings on my end so long as we book our time in. Hell, I might even ask to go in for a spell just to record some monologues or audition pieces so y'all can hear me.

And while I'm doing all of that, I'd like to see more interested parties here in this thread, waving their banners and making me groan with their 'can do' attitude and their 'can't be bothered' bodies.

No.28899
Hooray, this thread's back again!

I'll do writing and possibly voice acting, though I have little experience with the latter. A radio play sounds good to me for a start, since, like it's been said already, we are in surplus of writers and VAs.

No.28900
I'm up for helping as well. I don't know with what, but I support this idea.

No.28904
I think it might be a good idea to decide which medium to use before going any farther. It`s a decision that affects both the script writing and designs ,which will be the begining steps of this production.

Now,not everything is available to us...someone earlier in the thread for example suggested claymation.Fine and nice,I like claymation but how would the animation work load be shared over the internet? Most likely one person would be tasked with building sets, modeling the characters and props, animate and film everything by him or herself. That's a lot work, time and money for one person. If there are solutions,I'm all ears(or all eyes here).

Flash,on the other hand,is cheaper, easier, more accessible to people of differing skill(people who can draw and people who can't),and the files can easily be shared over the internet.

I'm usually not a big fan of flash animation, the end result is normally stiff and lifeless. But a show called Wakfu made see the potential is flash. The studio that produced the show may have done evrything in-house but their production model can be applied on-line.

Traditionnal(such as myself) can do the key animation (usually for the more complex animation),scan it and have a file ready for the next department, those who can draw and have flash can then take those files, trace the line work on flash and use flash to do the inbetweens(there might be a few times when the inbetweens don't look too good,[hands tend to be a problem there]they might need to be drawn. For those who can't draw but have a knack for animation can use flash cut-out animation for simpler sequences(dialogue, walk cycles,etc...).

I did not even touch on layouts & backgrounds yet(whether we use flash' flat colors for the background or photoshop a more textured look[and if we use photoshop,we might need a compositing program like After Effect to bring the flash and photoshop elements together]).

Knowing what the story is and what we want to realized visually might help determine which medium to chose.Knowing the medium will help script writers about what can and cannot be done, help designers figure out what designs might work best and help figure out how to organize the rest of the production.

Another suggestion might also be to aim for a pilot-like episode first to put the production team to the test(that doesn't mean,we skimp on quality).
The pilot would require a smaller team and could then be used to recrut a larger one if we see that this idea is doable.

Voice acting is a major part of most (but not all) animations, specifically for the purpose of lip-syncing. Doing a radio play would allows us to work towards an achievable goal in the short term, discover the acting capabilities of those offering their services as well as providing the artistically inclined folk here with vocal tracks they could use for animation tests. If one of the many writers hanging around would like to whip up a quick script, that'd be even better. It all flows together.

Furthermore, the Voocaroo thread on /baw/ has a large number of links from people displaying their vocal prowess on a whim. If we are unable to do in an organized manner something that people are able to do for shits and giggles then the only thing this thread will get is another year of people offering their services to a project that will never happen.

No, it's not a cartoon but it gets the ball rolling.

I'm not the one starting a radio play project on a thread that clearly advertises itself as an animation project thread.
The smart thing would've been to start your own thread and have post 1 advertise your project and attract people who be interested in paticipating in your project. You'd have a larger pool of talent to choose from. The post no 1 ,after all, is the first thing people will see of your thread.

But instead, you're stuck behind this post no 1:

And you're calling me stupid?

As for "project that never happen" and me being "uneducated",well, who are guys to decide, what's your background on this subject?

I know far better than you how stacked the odds are against such a project. And even though it would most likely fail,it's not for you to decide whether others should attempt it or not,it's not for you to sabotage what you have no vision for.Attempting the impossible is much more interesting than playing it safe, like your doing.
What I bring to this project does give it a small, albeit a very slim, chance.

What do I bring?This:

The radio play was proposed as a method of advancing any animation endeavors one step at a time. First concentrating on voice acting and scene-staging.
The first step on a multi-step process which roots itself in the project that started the thread in the first place.

A bit of reading within the thread would've told you that.

To be fair, the animation idea died when it became clear we had more "idea men" and writers than people who could clearly do the work, and if you had actually read the thread, you'd know that. And who said /coc/ threads had to be restricted to the topic on-hand? Especially if said topic isn't really possible in the short term. A radio play is simply a short term goal at best.

The animation isn't going to happen. It isn't. Not if we can't get this off the ground first. If we can, great! We can start thinking about an original radio play, and perhaps even get animation guys to animate some of the prior scripts. If not? I guess we're back to where we were a couple of months ago.
