Good, you're the only one I can trust to give an objective utilitarian review of its features.

An actual, honest account of it all would take a week or two to put together, but I can list some points, I guess.

Overall, I actually like it.

+ Utility app variety is massive. MASSIVE. I don't really see the need to have a particularly advanced smartphone when I have this right now. It's even taking the slack for a few of my other devices. I can see myself using it for cookbooks and textbooks and such, along with browsing the web on the john.
+ Dictation works ridiculously well. Makes me wonder why Siri wasn't put on as well.
+ In the times when you can tell the difference, the screen is magical. The colors don't seem as nice as on the PSV, but the resolution is maddening. Not enough apps take advantage of it right now, though.

/ The new screen is nice, but it doesn't make a huge difference in most cases. If you're interested in an iPad, play with a 2nd and 3rd gen for a while, and see which one you prefer.
/ Nothing worthwhile takes advantage of the device's power. It's still nice to be able to effortlessly multitask a billion apps at once, though.

- It does get hot like everyone says, but not as much as my laptop.
- The chargers are mad wonky. Apparently my old iPhone/iPod chargers don't work when I use the non-Apple USB-outlet converter, and it doesn't charge on my desktop for some reason.
- The game selection is pretty grim. There are lots of console/handheld ports with ridiculous prices and terrible controls, millions of variants of the same popular game, etc. Good games are rare gems. For example, there are a few cave shooters out right now.
- I can tell my 16gb model will get filled up soon. Oh boy~
- It's thick, heavy, and fragile. I walked up Lexington from 42nd street to 68th, and found myself struck with several anxiety attacks, grimly expecting some mad hazard to come out of nowhere and crack it's shitmade body into a million pieces. My 4thgen Kindle isn't like that at all. It's super-fragile, yes, but it doesn't feel that way. It's also really light and easy to hold one-handed. You can actually tell while holding the new iPad that in two or so years, it'll be the old, giant dinosaur that nobody in the world would want to buy with all the better options out there. Think: DS Phat made of glass.

I still haven't tried using dictation to jot down large messages, or playing music, etc. I still have a lot to learn about the device itself. I'll update you on it later.

I love my MacBook, I love my iPod Touch, but I can't seem to muster up any real reason to buy an iPhone or an iPad. What can tablets or touch-screen phones do that my current phone, iPod, and laptop can't?

I would possibly get one as an e-comic reader, though, in case I want to zoom in on a specific panel or something. If I'm going to get an e-book reader, I want the option to see any possible photos in the book.

I did some research and a kindle or nook might be better for that. Moe's got more info but

That kinda confirms my own personal fears.

Not much, really, if you've got all of those devices already and have no problem carrying all of them around with you.

A tablet is an inbetween device for situations where a laptop is too much hassle but a phone or iPod would not be up to your needs. Like when you want to watch Netflix in a car (where a laptop would be a hassle), read an ebook or ecomic in the bathroom on a screen that's big enough and easy enough on the eyes to make that not feel awkward, or many other things. If you have a cell phone, an mp3 player, a laptop, and an ebook reader, there's not really anything you can do with a tablet that you can't do with one of those.

But for that matter, the only things you could do with any of those things that you couldn't do with a tablet would be running desktop applications or fitting it in your pocket. Even phone calls could be handled by Skype or the like.

Wait, Kindles can do comics now? Niiice.

I haven't actually ever used Netflix (although I've wanted to) and I can't read, watch a lot of stuff, or play vidja in the car or else I get horrible vertigo. I think if anything, I'll end up buying an eBook reader. Thanks for the advice!

Another question- if a game comes out for iPad, should it also come out for Mac as well?

The Kindle Fire is good for reading comics. I don't have a ton of experience with it, but I might buy one for my mom soon.

>if a game comes out for iPad, should it also come out for Mac as well?

Not really, but I think there's a way to emulate them.

My mom is really good at getting free iPads.
A 2 was her 25 year employment gift and then she won a 3 at a staff party.
My sister called dibs on the old one almost immediately, lol.
I've tried it out, seems pretty cool.
The only thing is the times I'd want to have an iPad on me are times where I wouldn't want to be carrying it around.
My phone will suffice for now.
