Right now I'm using two free programs to protect my computer and keep it safe and working properly. Those are Avast! Free Antivirus and Iobit's Advanced SystemCare. Avast! does a great job warning me about dangerous stuff and helping me when I don't heed those warnings, but I'm beginning to think that Advanced SystemCare really, really sucks. I'd like to replace it with something that does the same things better, like deleting my privacy traces and automatically defragging the hard drive. Could anyone suggest some good, free programs that do these things? And if there's something better than Avast!, I'd like to hear about that, too.

avg or mse to replace avast if needed
ccleaner and defraggler for drive cleaning and defragging
spybot for extended protection
malwarebytes for deep system cleaning

Replace Avast? Are you sure? I've had AVGFree at one point, I don't know if I was very impressed. You're certain that it's the better program? What about MSE? As for the others, thanks for the suggestions. The think that I did like about Advanced SystemCare was that it did everything at the touch of one button. Are you saying I'd need four other programs to take its place?

anyone ever hear of Peerblock?

No, could you please enlighten me?

its a security program of some sort from what I've heard keeps nosy connections from connecting to your PC. Additional layer security on top of firewalls and such.

Ooh. 'Peer block.' Obvious, in hindsight.

>Replace Avast!
You don't actually need to replace Avast! if you don't want. Avast! is a first-level security program, which means that every now and then something may get through, but it's better than nothing. AVG and MSE are the 2 next most recommended 1st level Antiviruses. If Avast! works for you then I wouldn't change it, I'm just giving you options.

It's not a good idea to combine a file cleaner with defragging software. Really CCleaner and Defraggler should be all you need to replace Advanced Systemcare. CCleaner will actually link itself to your recycle bin so you can run it every time you right click on the recycle bin. Defraggler has a schedule feature so you can schedule your defrag to happen whenever you want.

Spybot and Malwarebytes are for deep-level cleaning. Spybot is good at catching things that fall through the cracks, and features registry protection and a secure file deleter. Malewarebytes free version is one of the best programs when it comes to cleaning any infected files you actually get. These would be more the second line of defense and are not, strictly speaking, necessary (unless you actually get infected).

Really you'd only need 2 programs, CCleaner and Defraggler. Just giving you options man.

Peer Guardian was what we used back in the Kazaa days when torrents where just starting up. I haven't used it in a while, but I recall it being a list of known federal and RIAA-affiliated IP addresses, and software that would block those addresses from connecting to your computer. Good for avoiding "snitches" in the swarm. But kind of "hurr durr" in terms of actual security - running without it hasn't really affected me.

If you really give a shit just get Tor.

I don't think Tor covers torrenting

It's technically possible, but it's a terrible idea. Also everyone else on the Tor system will hate you forever.

meant more for browsing. Peer Blocking software as a security solution is pretty meh.

also tor supports tcp/ip protocol, whereas p2p is the udp protocol.
