Is this image still good? I'm leaning towards a Lenovo 510 series. Is there something better? Also: flash hard drives. Aside from Macs, any laptops come with them? Are they worth it? Is the CES tech show changing anything?

Yes, Sandybridge and AMD Fusion changed everything. Don't buy a laptop until they carry those CPUs.

Seriously? I'd think a slightly older generation would still work perfectly well. The Lenovo is near top of the line spec-wise for this generation. The price tag speaks to that.

Solid State Drives are used by mostly smaller things like netbooks and macs; stuff that might take a lot of falls. Might be worth it depending on how clumsy you are.

From what I'm reading around the net stay away from any any Sandie based machines. Hollywood strong-armed them into putting some kinda DRM crap into the chip-sets.

The DRM is only for Intel's movie service, Intel Insider I think

Still I don't trust any such thing ever since the Sony Rootkit incidents

the general hubub is that it's only for Intels' movie service, and doesn't effect torrenting or regular activity. However I'm still iffy over getting a sandybridge for a laptop. At those prices why not just go desktop and get full power?

That doesn't seem much different than the HDCP built into any modern graphics card. Also, Anti-Theft 3.0 is pretty natch.

way too much like the stuff Apple is trying to push since the courts ruled "Jailbreaking" a phone is legal. I'll just go with AMD for now or whatever Nvidia is working on when they get it together.

So...there's no laptop that currently comes with a solid-state HD and 3.0 that's not a Mac, right?

I believe the HP Envies and Vaio Zs have SSDs. I have no idea what you mean by 3.0, though. Can't be USB 3.0.

yea 3.0 is still a little while to being implemented. I'd say next models later this year.

Okay, I've narrowed it down to: and Envy, either 14" or 17", or one of the Lenovo 510s. I might want to do some gaming on my laptop, and I will be using it through law school and my career (if you can call it that) in journalism. I may also be using it when I finally enter the workforce for reals.

Advice re: Core i7-740QM or Core i7-840QM processors
