Yeah, always did think the cast of D/P/Pt suffered from having such a glut of pointless legendaries that it really watered the concept down a lot. B/W in contrast only had like one or two that didn't follow any particular themes.

Any word on the story? Is it still "10 year old with only his/her mom goes on a journey to collect Pokemon, defeat 8 gyms in a fairly specific order, and somewhere after the 7th gym have a throw down with the leader of the Big Bad"?

It's been that way since RGBY and I'm sick and tired of it.

You're just upset that Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 dialled it back down to saving the world from being ruled by an evil organization instead of saving all life on the planet/in the universe.

If Plasma was actually out to do what they claimed they would, that would've been interesting. Unsurprisingly, they were another evil team that wasn't Team Rocket, so people complain.

Personally, I'd rather have an open world roguelike sorta deal. You can challenge the gyms in any order and they scale depending on how many badges you have, for starters. Once you clear the league, you can go off routes which were sanctioned for safety reasons. And you can accept daily challenges from trainers as the champ. Hell, they could do ANYTHING with this series and they don't because it prints money as it is.

Is that not just Mystery Dungeon?

And yeah that should have gone with the thing from the Adventure manga where they point out that releasing tame animals into the wild is a really bad idea and thats why Plasma most be stopped.

I can already tell that the long pause between the battle starting and the bottom screen becoming functional is going to piss me off by the time I'm halfway through with the game.

I know that the ridiculous zooming in animation every time you entered a door last gen was just mind-boggingly long and frustrating. There is no reason for there to be blank screens where you cannot do anything when no action is taking place by now

Given the fact that other DS games or 3DS games are much better at hiding or minimizing those load times, there's still no reason for it.

I mean take something like animal crossing. Yes there are still load times, but they're so minimal that it's not an issue.

It's not that I play Pokemon for the story, it's that changing the story might make me interested in Pokemon. We've had the same damn gameplay and story for the main Pokemon games since RGB. Hell, Yellow had more of a different story than the following Gens.

Every game can be boiled down to what I posted in >>26487: "Fatherless kid goes on adventure to collect Pokemon and 8 gym badges, and sometime after Gym 7 faces off against the leader of Team Badguys, then goes on to beat the Elite 4." It's not even tradition at this point, it's either stubbornness or lack of imagination.

Why do the bad guys have to be Team Whatever?
Why does the big showdown have to always be after Gym 7 but before the Elite 4? Why does there always have to be 8 Gyms?
We have 18 types now, and only 12 of those see themed Gym Bosses. Why do we have to do them in a certain order and always start from the same, sleepy hamlet?
I've always been a fan of >>26489's idea with the scaling, or each gym has "tiers" and you go back to fight a higher tier as your Pokemon become stronger (this is also how they would make a Pokemon MMO work.)
Why do the past games/regions get paltry lip service and one or two cameos, if anything? Prof. Oak seems to be the only thing really tying them together now, even Bill has been forgotten. Gold/Silver was awesome because once you complete the region, BOOM, you get access to last gen's region to see how it has changed and get those badges. I'm not saying each game should have to include every prior game's region (though that would be awsm, and great for a Wii U entry in the main franchise), but having just the prior with a few changes would be great in extended the life of the game beyond "collect more pokey manz".

The narrative of Pokemon is so dull and repetitive that even having the cliche twist of the Elite Champion revealing himself as your dad after you defeat him would blow my fucking mind.

And this is just the story. I can complain for hours about the gameplay, as well.

tl;dr: It's like we've been driving the same damn 1965 Chevrolet Impala for forever. Yes, it's still a nice car, but there are cars with far better gas mileage and safer interiors now. But instead of getting a new car, we just keep adding trinkets and racing stripes to the Impala, changing the type of tires now and then. Replacing the engine or the interior would do worlds of good to make it interesting again.

>Its the same with other samy nintendo game.
At least they sometimes try to significantly change up the gameplay in those.
Except for the NSMB series. That's pretty much a constant.

What do we get in pokemon? One more person to team battles and a nonsense rotation mode. And really, we don't need that much. The game design is solid. It just wouldn't hurt to put more variation on how you actually progress through a story.

So not only would I have to buy B&W2 (and most likely beat it) in order to trade Pokemon over to XY, then pay money to store them on the internet where nothing bad could ever happen and I have access to them all the time totally; but I can't trade over my GTS Pokemon because Game Freak and Nintendo get ruffles in their panties that people "cheat" to get their 30000 DLC timed event exclusive Pokemon so I can complete my Pokedex?
No thanks.
>> No. 26507
Good hacks are indistinguishable from real pokemon. Stop being bad at hacking.

It's going to be 500 yen= $5 a year. I can't even image your financial situation if you can't save up $5 in a year. I recommend not buying X or Y. How do you even own a 3DS?

Also no shit you have to buy an older Pokemon game so you can transfer pokemon from it to new game. What, were you planning on materializing them out of the fucking aether or something? What? Why is this even a thing.

I have Black and it was shit, so I don't want to buy BW2. It's for the DS and they've made shit crazy backwards compatible in the past so it's not unrealistic to think they could have made that game compatible or hell why not just trade between games like in all the other iterations?

I don't want to pay for something that's been in every other game for free. I don't give a shit about storing 3000 Pokemon. I can't imagine the kind of person that would need that. All I give a shit about is transferring my old ones.

I know you're mad that someone dislikes something you don't, but if you're going to get that bent out of shape about it, the internet isn't a good place for you.

Bank and Transporter work for all gen 5 games. It's not for DS, it's for 3DS. Trade between gens hasn't existed since gen 2. There will be more a free trial for more than a month if for some reason you're so poor that you can't save up less than 2 pennies a day for it.

Have fun.

>Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions! The latest one is called Mega Mewtwo X and is exclusive to Pokemon X. It is Psychic/Fighting, has Steadfast as its Ability, and its Mega Stone is called "Mewtwonite X." The original Mega Mewtwo is obviously called Mega Mewtwo Y, is exclusive to Pokemon Y, is Psychic-type, can learn Hypnosis, and its Mega Stone is called "Mewtwonite Y."

>Mega Garchomp has Sand Force as its Ability.

>Fairy-type is super effective against: Fighting, Dark, and Dragon; weak to: Steel and Poison; resists: Fighting, Dark, and Bug; is not very effective against: Steel, Fire, and Poison; and is immune to: Dragon

>Steel's Dark and Ghost-type resistances are gone now. (!)

>Hariboogu is Chespin's evolution, Grass-type, and learns Mud Shot. Teerunaa is Fennekin's evolution, is Fire-type, learns Psycho Cut, and has a twig in its broom-like tail (will it evolve into a witch or something?). Gekogashira, Froakie's evolution, is Water-type and learns Bounce.

>Two Fossil Pokemon are revealed: Chigorasu (the brown T. Rex) is a Rock/Dragon type has Hard Chin as its Ability, which increases the attack of moves involving the jaw, like Crunch. Amarusu (the blue Pokemon) is a Rock/Ice type and has Freeze Skin as its Ability, which changes all its Normal-type attacks to Ice-type attacks and boosts their power as well.

>Torimian, a white Normal-type Pokemon (the one from the Pokemon Direct), has Fur Coat as its Ability, which cuts the damage from moves that come into contact with it in half. A new game mechanic allows you to trim its fur to change its appearance. Round Eyes is a new Fairy-type attack it can learn. Nyaonikusu (Meowstick from the leaks), a Psychic-type cat, has major gender differences. Each gender has a different set of movepools, with the male's movepool being more aggressive and the female's being more supportive. The male can learn Miracle Eye whereas the female can learn Extrasensory (the female is on the left, the male is on the right). Nyaonikusu has Keen Eye or Infiltrator as its Abilities. (the two Pokemon on the left of >>26534 )

>For some reason Parting Shot, Geomancy, and Oblivion Wing are listed as unknown types (???) even though Geomancy was originally announced as a Fairy-type move and Oblivion Wing was announced as a Dark-type move.

>There are five scientists associated with Team Flare: Kuseroshiki, Momiji, Bara, Akebi, and Kolea. Team Flare's goal is to create a beautiful new world. (They are probably dicks about it though)

>You can customize your clothes and hair at a Salon/Boutique. A famous actress named Karune helps you.

I think Chesnaught would be better if he had a different head. Right now, even though it has a serious expression, it's pretty cutesy.

It's certainly better than the shitfest that was Gen 4, and most of the new Pokemon don't outright suck, but a lot of them aren't really that good either, and having mostly crappy looking starters isn't really helping its case. Personally I consider gen 2 to have the best ratio of "completely forgettable" to "wait that was from gen 2?" designs but whatever. If we only look at the amount pokemon we like, I'd probably rate them 5>1>6>4>2>3. If we only look at pokemon we hate, it'd probably be 6>5>4>3>1>2 (where 6 is the most hated and 2 is the least).

But the thing is who cares about the pokemon you hate. If I come across a Klefki I'm just going to box it and never use it ever. Same as a Mr. Mime or whatever. The only ones that matter are the ones you like, because you're actually going to be using them.

This.
It's been 6 gens and their only solution to bring old Pokemon up to current gen expectations is to mess around with their egg and TM pools. Maybe give them an evolution or a mega, but it doesn't fix most of these Pokemons core problems which are terrible stats.

>>26668
Don't forget 3 electric types.
Honestly the lack of new Pokemon is more frustrating simply because there are still a lot of type combinations that have yet to be covered, but Gamefreak keeps shoveling out the same combinations.

>>26670
So we should be happy and eagerly gobble up yet another half finished product in the meantime?
Personally I've canceled my pre-order. I'm real tired of Game Freak pulling this shit. Introduce a new feature like challenge mode, then promptly take it away, or clipping out Gym Leader rematches completely and saving them (yet again) for the next wave of games this gen.

So unless they do a slew of free DLC, I have surpassed my tolerance threshold for this.

Adding the Fairy type was about balancing, by reducing the supremacy of the Dragon type. While we're not certain of the mechanics yet, right now it's looking like dual type moves are going to also work toward balancing, by giving STAB moves that deal different damage types so, for example, Fighting type Pokemon have effective ways of dealing with Ghost types.

It sounds like you're not talking about balancing, you're talking about homogenization. What, you want all final-evolution Pokemon to have the same stat totals or something? What's the point in having this many Pokemon if they're all equally usable? Part of the fun of the game is figuring out effective ways to use seemingly non-competitive Pokemon, like Smeargle.
>> No. 26678
>>26677
Fairy types where a nice thought and all, but it wouldn't kill them to go back and give say, 7 more points in all of Beedrills or any of the other trash-tier Pokemons stats to make them a little more viable.
A good movepool can only take you so far if you don't have even half the stats to back it up.
Their policy seems to be "Well that one old Pokemon is pretty bad... how about we just make a new one rather than try to fix the old one? We can fill our quota much easier."
>> No. 26679
>>26677
>It sounds like you're not talking about balancing, you're talking about homogenization. What, you want all final-evolution Pokemon to have the same stat totals or something?

Because there is currently exactly one good team and other options are all objectively inferior, right? After all, everything that isn't crap must be exactly the same!

Why do you accuse me of wanting to destroy any difference between Pokémon? You don't actually believe that making currently useless Pokémon viable in some way can only be done by making them copies of already good Pokémon. Do you have any more idiotic assumptions you would like to put into my mouth?

It is possible to have variety in a game without objectively inferior options existing. Pokémon is not the only game in existence and it sure isn't the best one.

>Smeargle

Terrible example. Smeargle already has a mechanical purpose and would still have it even if it couldn't be used in battles at all. It doesn't need any changes, unlike a lot of other Pokémon.

Pokemon has never had balance, because the amount of people who give a shit about the meta are even smaller than the amount of people who play grand strategy. When I reach the endgame, I usually just catch the legendaries and then focus on the beauty contests and breeding.

The actual combat in pokemon games was always shitty. Stadium was probably the only time it was ever legitimately fun for me. I can't imagine there's a huge audience in favor of "fixing" it when so many better collection/grinding RPGs like Disgaea, DQM, and Megaten exist.

Beedrill is an early peaker. It is designed to be a powerful player for the early game, and be replaced by better Pokemon as you get further in the game.

It's important to remember that a lot of Pokemon are designed around and balanced toward the single player game, rather than being made for multiplayer. Early evolution doesn't mean anything in multiplayer, but it can mean a lot in the single player game.
>> No. 26701

Which is why GameFreak should really consider reevaluating that premise.
The single player aspect has always been easy as shit. Sometimes more-so than others.
That's why the challenge mode was great. If gave you a chance for an actually challenge in the game. Unfortunately you had to beat the game first and also they removed it in XY because, as always, it's two steps forward, three steps back for new gens.

As for Beedrill, I only used it as an example and as far as BW is concerned, evolution doesn't exist under 40 anyway.

How would you propose making a game like Pokemon "difficult?" It's a menu-based RPG. The only two options really are low-difficulty or high-grind. Especially in something with options as limited in scope as Pokemon--improving the AI isn't really going to make much of a difference in difficulty, so it's pretty much just raising the levels or the stats of enemies.

They've elected to not rely on grind, which makes sense as they're targeting children primarily. So what choice do we have for a low-grind, high-difficulty menu-based RPG?

While not really that difficult, making battles in the main game more like Pokémon Stadium (i.e. opponents with actual teams instead of random underleveled junk) would be a big improvement.

All you have to do to make pokemon more challenging is take away all of the safeguards pokemon has:

-Instead of only being jumped by wild pokemon in tall grass, you get jumped everywhere (like how caves work) except cities.
-Wild pokemon attack in groups of 2-6. Not like horde battles either; every one of them is a full power wild pokemon. These are pre-set enemy groups that might have some form of strategy (for example, 3 Golbats might spam confuse ray at you to prevent you from attacking 2 selfdestructing Gravelers). In exchange, you use 3-4 pokemon in battle.
-Repels are less effective. They only reduce the amount of wild pokemon encounters. In exchange, pokemon roam the field and they have to touch you to enter battle. However, they are very aggressive and difficult to dodge.
-Big dungeons like Viridian Forest and Rock Tunnel between every town, replacing the wussy nearly empty routes. No doctors halfway through. More random dungeons like the Lavender Town pokemon tower and Silph co.

And some exclusive to pokemon:

-All trainers have a full team. In exchange, there are less trainers in dungeons, but no too many less.
-Going into a Gym locks you in like at the Elite 4. Gym leaders have 2 or 3 pokemon that cover their weaknesses, and their specialty pokemon have good coverage moves.

Bonus Change: A significantly more radical version of Gen 5's exp formula that makes leveling beyond enemy levels extremely difficult but makes catching new pokemon up trivial.

Basically, what makes pokemon easier than most RPGs is that there is very little attrition (which means there is little resource management) and that you pretty much only fight battles on your own terms. With these changes you are constantly in danger, but also able to quickly build teams for certain situations. If it gets balanced right nobody would ever forget that Escape Ropes exist ever again!

Did you really need more new Pokemon? It was already over 600 and the selection of available Pokemon in a single game is the highest it has ever been so verity isn't an issue. What kills me is that they didn't bother to try and rebalance any of the old ones. AGAIN.
They added some really interesting things like Mega Evolutions (which should have gone to weaker Pokemon), Poke Ami (which will be gone next gen; shocker), and super training for easier EV boosting.
On the other hand GameFreak keeps stripping features out like rematches that are only in the second wave of a generation. That's bullshit and everyone knows it.
I'm hoping for DLC since Nintendo can finally do that now; however it'll probably just be timed event exclusive legendaries and megastones.

I'm buying it, and I'm giving it a day to impress me. If it fails to impress; the game will suddenly fail to save my games and I'll return it for a refund and most likely wash my hands of this tripe forever.

It's not so much the fact they only have 70. Its that so many of them look really dull and I was banking on the idea that I would have a bigger pool to pick out some decent ones.

But really, hearing that it's shorter, easier, and doesn't even utilize the 3D out of battles (I'm actually one of the people that use the 3D all the time and was looking forward to seeing the world with depth.) And things like pokemonami and the stupid looking megaevolutions really aren't pulling me in.

This whole thing seems to be a case of style over substance, only I hate the style. Oh well. Maybe the sequel will be better.

I'm more annoyed that most of the new Pokemon seem to be pretty terrible stats-wise, plus their designs are mostly crummy. I'd rather they focus on making a few Pokemon with interesting typings and are useful than a glut of new trash that I won't be using anyway, and unfortunately the new generation is neither.

In exchange, you use 3-4 pokemon in battle.
>-Repels are less effective. They only reduce the amount of wild pokemon encounters. In exchange, pokemon roam the field and they have to touch you to enter battle. However, they are very aggressive and difficult to dodge.

Still no love for Farfetch'd. Seems that every standard Pokémon from RBY that had no evolution line has one or a Mega form except the lovable duck soup... (well, and Lapras and Tauros.)

>>26781
That just means we'd've gotten Bidoof #3 and Pidgey #4, like in Black and White. So many of those Pokémon were insanely generic and clones of already-existing, generic Pokémon.

I would have rather seen the MEvos stick around, but turn into branching evolution paths (hopefully with more design attention than "we added spikes and horns!") So instead of using the Whateverstone to turn Alakazam into Mega Alakazam once during battle, you would level up a Kadabra while hopping on one foot or something and it evolves into Prestopocus.

...Actually, considering the accelerometers in the 3DS, Gamefreak could have made a requirement for evolving a Pokémon to be shaking the 3DS, but this would have been novel and have hilariously unfortunate consequences.

I'm not too far in, so I haven't come across the Pokemon Amie thing yet. So far I like the game alright, I have noticed I'm mainly using my Torchic over my Froakie more (this may be due to some unresolved issues from my rom of Pokemon Emerald fucking up when I was halfway through and I lost all my progress and Sableyes) and there's a lot of improvements in the game (Exp share, skates, etc), but I do have some issues with the game that basically boil down to personal preferences. I wish the game was a little bit harder and I wish my rivals/friends were different/didn't exist. The latter has been an issue since gen 3, but I feel like it's been worse in gen 5 and now six. I really preferred it when your rival was more insulting/dismissive of you, rather than telling you how special and amazing you are all the time. It makes the battles with them feel more intense, like "Fuck, Blue, there's no way I'm letting myself loose to this scumbag" and it felt more meaningful to beat that jerk at the end of the game, and it forces them to acknowledge you. I don't know, I just started and already I feel like too many people are presiding me in game for winning a few fairly easy battles.

It's probably just nostalgia, but I kinda like the older games better where it feels like it's you and your battle pets against the wilderness and the mafia.

Tell me about it. It almost feels like they're stuffing too many things for me to try out between Gym 1 and Gym 2. The Battle Maison, breeding, the fishing rod, the bike, berry farming, the hidden item detector, the fossils... all between Gym 1 and 2. Couple that with the amazing new Exp Share, and I accidentally overleveled my best pokes to 31+ before the second badge and lost control of them. I had to catch and train Scraggy with fighting moves to get the second badge.

I have a question for everyone. A serious question.

Why is it that, when arguing about which gen is the best, people pretend the new games don't ALSO have all of the improvements the old ones did?

Like someone will say that gen 4 is better than gen 5 because it did the physical/special split, but in gen 5 moves were also split into physical and special individually. Or, someone says gen 5 is better than gen 6 because it introduced infinite use TMs, but you can use TMs infinitely in gen 6, too. I actually saw someone say that gen 3 is the best because it introduced running.

Now this wouldn't bother me too much if people were talking about which gen had the best improvements. But when people say Ruby and Sapphire are better games than X and Y because you can run?
>> No. 26866
>>26865
Because they don't. For instance, (H)G/(S)S had an entire region as part of the after-game, day-based events, and the ability to bank some of your Pokedollars with your mom, all of which were things I greatly enjoyed.

D/P had the extremely useful Pokétch, but they got rid of that for B/W.

For actual battling or Pokemon stat adjustments, they will stick around (until they're adjusted again), so if that's all someone cares about then, yes, the games don't degrade in that area.

>why do ... people pretend the new games don't ALSO have all of the improvements the old ones did?
Because they don't. See: Every single third game in a gen.

There are also things to consider such as difficulty curve, Pokemon selection, post-game, etc.
XY is fantastic; but its postgame is completely laughable.

Oops I undermined my point a bit with my wording. I don't mean actual legitimate problems people might have with missing features, like walking pokemon. I mean stuff that IS in later games, but that people pretend are not.

Like if gen 7 comes out and it has pokemon amie, there are people will still say that gen 6 is the best because it has pokemon amie. That's stupid, but it's going to happen, I guarantee it. And if gen 7 DOESN'T have pokamie people will instead just look back on it wistfully instead of upholding it as something gen 6 has over 7. It's all backwards! It's like only the improvements that are carried forward matter.
>> No. 26870

The gift Pokemon in this case are usually given to you because they REALLY want them in your party. I don't think I'd really recommend the entire PC being available at all times.

Also in the case of people lauding improvements from one gen to another: in Gen IV the physical/special split was an exciting improvement. In Gen VI it's just expected. Gen IV there would be getting praised for moving the game forward, not necessarily the effects of the split itself.

With some people talking about the already alluded-to 7th region I'm suddenly reminded of this image from a while back. What if the this new region isn't a new region at all, but merely southern Kalos? I know some people are hyped for ~secret new pokemon~ from a ~secret new region~, but this seems more likely.
>> No. 26874

It does make a nice setup for B/W2-like expansion. And, the southern part of the Kalos map is very cloud-heavy, Nintendo's favorite way to hide as-yet-inaccessible areas.

I wonder if there were any problems with the development of this game. It's just far too conspicuous how big the gap between the first and second gym is compared to gyms 4, 5, and 6. It's also really weird how little the gym leaders and other important characters show up compared to black and white. I mean I only got to slightly past the 4th gym in those games but it seemed like, at the very least, I always met the gym leader before fighting them, there were events in every town, and I was just constantly being jumped by any of Cheren/Bianca/N for battles. I thought the game was going to be really long and interesting but after Gym 3 and Korrina it just kind of fell down and didn't really get up. Does it get better after the pokeball factory, at least? The pokeball factory was such a pathetic "dungeon" that it pretty much sapped any enthusiasm I had. Seriously even compared to Mt. Moon it's pathetic. Does it ever get back to gym 1-3 quality or should I just stop playing now?

What's the fucking difference?
You're still buying the same game more or less with added features that should have been in XY. The only difference is that one option has only one game that is more or less a feint re-imagining, and the second option has two and is a loose sequel to XY.
