I never had any fantroll ideas, but a trip to the zoo today made me realize that I had been approaching it from the wrong direction: you have to make a fan lusus, then make a troll kid to be its ward.

So now I have a giant crocodile/axolotl with a fussy seatroll living in its accommodating guts. He acts like a little cleaner shrimp for his voracious swamp-dwelling parent/home.

I also like the idea of a troll whose hive is built around his hermit crab lusus, and he's become even better at architecture than other trolls because he has to make a new one every time the crab gets bigger.

I forgot to mention the kismeses whose lusii are in a symbiotic relationship (like http://www.wetwebmedia.com/shrimpgobies.htm but maybe on land). It's a harrowing experience for everyone involved.

I find the hardest part of making a fan troll is making a name that has meaning and sounds good, instead of being six letters strewn together. I've currently been working on an idea and found some things that might make a good name, with tweaking.

I'm toying with the idea of allocating the cleaning duties to an avian lusus and its lowblood kid, thus facilitating some class-conflict-based drama and/or humor. The problem is that the seadweller's so finicky in my mind that I can't imagine him leaving filth around to be cleaned by anyone else. But I do like the image of a man-sized bird carrying its grumpy adopted son to work in the mouth of a giant monster every day.

I suspect that the problem with most fantrolls is that they aren't based around annoying "Internet Person" archetypes like the original trolls were. I'd love to see a paranoid conspiracy theorist, or a self-absorbed webcomic artist who refuses to acknowledge criticism, or someone who creates multiple accounts to back up their arguments. Knowing trolls, that last one would probably have actual split personalities.

I assume some people here have problems with the way I depict drugs. When I tried to come up with possible criticisms, I thought of that. Sopor slime has been shown to be not a marijuana-like drug but something dangerous. Since the approved use of sopor slime is as a topical sedative, it makes sense for it to act like an opioid. Plus, it's fictional, people, I can make up what I want!

Considering most fantrolls are either 'adjusted' self-inserts, clichéd beyond comprehension, 'special' (ugh no you can't have rainbow-coloured blood and six horns) or horrible Mary Sues, I agree.

If you're actually going to roleplay... well, I know it's just silly MSPA roleplaying and no one really takes it as seriously as 'real' (sorry) roleplaying, but honestly, most people are far more impressed by someone who's actually able to create and evolve a mostly normal (for the setting) character with believable flaws and abilities in a realistic way than someone who decides to break the rules established for the setting and saying "it's okay, they were created by the game so they can be weird and abnormal and mutants and crazy"

Sorry for this, gonna sage now. I'm just not a great fan of fan trolls in general (although some are impressive), especially not the bad ones.

Personally I am okay with trolls having more to their outfit than just their symbol shirt; fashion is more than just having different shirts. I like to think that alll trolls can personalize their outfits, so long as their symbol and caste are present. Like the only ones I think wouldn't stylize their outfits would be the mutants like Karkat. It's better for them to blend in with the background than to stick out.

People should concentrate on the hives. That's where trolls get creative.

combat prowess isnt really a static thing in homestuck. it bends to the needs of the story rather than events in the story being constructed with established combat rules. so unless you wrote a story in which your trolls were ownzoning everyone, or an essay about why their weapons were the best and most powerful, your friends complaints are probably baseless.

I dunno I think that he may be right. See, one of these trolls is psionic; she can controll water. In her case she uses it to control her paints, she's an artist. So I gave her brushkind, something that she would use to augment her natural ability. I also gave her gunkind. With the intention that should she ever play sGrub she'd make a paintball-gun of some kind. He told me that is over powered.

Then my second troll is a gamblignat, so his weapon choice is unusual. Vriska already uses dice so I gave him cardkind. Pulling out five cards from the deck he can use them in battle. Kinda like Gambit, but without the mutant's powers.

Depending on what cards he draws he can either do something cool or not. Like lets say he draws out of the deck a 7, 8, and a 9. This allows him to conjure up a little worm looking thing that bites a lot. Or he pulls out an Ace, King, 4, and a 7. In this instance he can create four AK-47's that float around and shoot stuff.
This he told me was also overpowered and stupid.

i wouldnt call the paint controlling thing overpowered but its certainly an overly complex route to take to get to a paintball gun using character. at least she doesnt do something boring like kill people by messing with their body fluids. does the paint/paintballs have special deadly properties or something? i dont see how even deadly paintballs are necessarily worse than regular lasers or bullets.

although the paintball-homing youre probably aiming for with the concept could be construed as a cheap move, its only really cheap if its written cheaply. even if a character can remote control their bullets they still only have perfect aim if theyre written to have perfect aim. if they miss their shot and steer the bullet back around theres no guarantee that they wont just miss again, and hell, they might mess up and wind up with their bullet coming right back at themselves.

I got the idea for it from this one mario game where he goes around cleaning up junk with this suped up water gun;shower thing. If there's anything wrong with the paint troll it's that you gave her too many weapon types--psionics, guns, brushes (which I guess are wielded like a bat or a pole?) and the paint itself. It's just... clunky. Too many ideas. Keep psionics and the paint, throw the other stuff out; she can alchemize a Mario backpack from random junk or someone else's weapon if you want that.

I don't actually know you so I might be wrong but usually people who worry the most about overpowering characters tend to focus way too much on the weapons and stuff. Of course they look overpowered to other people--you've put the weapons front and center instead of the actual characters, the weapons are the only thing they have going for them. And it's all that they have going for them because you spent too much time fiddling with it instead of playing with traits that actually mattered.

How odd, I don't really like the paint troll all that much, I like the card one more. (even tried drawing him.... huge mistake.)

But I like what you said about her being too cluttered weapon wise; I will just give her psionics and the brush. Thanks for all the help. Anyone else have any opinions or anything? This is fun.

It's way more than just this is my guy, this is their name, this is their blood color / strifespecibus / sylladex / lusus / trolltag / etc etc.

It's a genuine story. It's not just they enter the game and then they go through gates and then they fight denizens and then the end yaaaaay. It's a full story with developed, original characters and a structured plot. It's a combination of half-written stories I've written my entire life and Homestuck is an outlet I can use to to put them all together.

It has a beginning, middle, and an end. It's not just a series of chatlogs.

I'm sorry I know this is whiny. I've spent all day writing more new scenes and dialogue and story developments and none of it would be as effective if it was just text. I can't bring it to life without art.

The troll it's for is a botanist so I'm looking for something somewhat ominous like most trolltags but also something having to do with plants or nature.

I can't help you with troll-tags; I'm lucky that I managed to come up with one that I used.

But as for her last name you don't have to just go with some sort of sea-animal name, though you could do that. Try looking up some cool sea animals and using their scientific name (Her lusus might provide something cool?) Or look up some ancient sea gods and goddesses and see if you can find something cool. Or maybe you could take a look at her interests and name her after one of those... I did that with my troll.

Even if whatever you come up with is enormously meaningful, it won't be really fun if it sounds ugly and stilted in her full name. Once you choose a concept, work with adding or subtracting syllables until the whole thing has rhythm to it.

When I was weird and sleep deprived yesterday I had thoughts like this, but...not trolls, and it wasn't human self inserts either...it was something like an actual real game of the series (Real game as in rl game version of Sburb, not we're all gonna die apart from a handful of kids who's task it is to win the game and make a new universe). It's bugging me now and kinda want to remember just what I was thinking up but my brain was scrambled.

i think it's really clear at this point that you inherit the sign of your closest known ancestor; it's basically their last name printed onto their shirt in the form of a logograph. the canon trolls of course had blood colours that matched their ancestors but i suppose, for people born the natural way, the colour doesn't necessarily correspond to the symbol. there might be aries trolls with green or blue or indigo blood too.

(of course for there to be other aries trolls it means the handmaid got it on with somebody and had natural kids; otherwise the handmaid and aradia are in a closed circuit and NO ONE but the troll characters we know would have zodiac symbols. the ancestors may have created their own symbols or stolen them to give themselves an identity.)

I was personally thinking of making a fantroll with neon yellow blood (that'd be what...? lowish-midlevel on the hemoscale?), six nubby little horns, telekinesis and heterochromia (probably orange and blue eyes) I was thinking of giving him a giant snapping turtle turtle for a lusus and probably having his hive be built on the turtle's back. His hive can serve as the perch for a second troll's luss and him and the other troll would probably have to help the giant-snapping-turtle-lusus navigate the enormous mangrove swamp they live in.

So I've been going on http://msparp.com/ lately because that's the magic place people can go to escape all their troubles and it's a good place to flesh out my fantroll Lampra, the insomniac burglar with self-esteem issues. I just had this run-in with an Equius roleplayer that went pretty well, especially after he brought in a friend to roleplay as Nepeta.
