I'm gonna be honest here, as his own character, and as a game on it's own merits, I actually liked Dino and DMC.
I mean, mechanics-wise, the game is fun as hell (though not as difficult as DMC4 or 3.)
Dino? Sure, he's not Dante-Dante, but in my mind that's fine because he can't replace Dante for me. I actually grew to like the guy and kinda appreciate his character and how he acted around others, and he had a pretty decent supporting cast overall. The level design was pretty great, but the worldbuilding kinda confused me for a bit. In every Devil May Cry game, Demons are trying to invade the world. Each one is always about a Hell-Gate of some sort letting demons through, so it's up to Dante (and presumably other Demon Hunters elsewhere) to stand in the way. In DMC's world, demons aren't trying to invade the world, they already conquered it. It's just not in the typical post-apocalypse-slavery-at-pitchfork's-end kind of conquering, it's more They Live! kind of shit, and the symbolism was kinda beat-you-over-the-head in terms of subtlety.
My one big beef of the characters was probably Virgil. There was a review I generally agree with in that he's not as credible a threat as DMC3's Virgil. He and Dante spent that entire game fighting and up until the end, Virgil was everything Dante was and more, he was just plain stronger and it took Dante's journey through Temen Ni Gru to get the strength to overcome him.
DMC's Dante and Virgil have a very different relationship, but the bigger issue is that they're kinda equals the whole way through, Virgil doesn't really demonstrate his strength at any point outside of his final fight with Dante, and by that point there's no reason to consider him a credible threat to Dante, we had no comparison. I haven't finished Virgil's Downfall, either, so I can't comment further than that.
