Eh, it wasn't exactly bad, but it wasn't exactly as good as the regular show could be at its best either.

Thought that it had some good ideas and jokes, and wasn't essentially as horrible as people seemed to think that it was going to be, but it wasn't exactly hugely great either.

I remember in a chat on another site recently, someone was talking about how a lot of people were going to the movies this summer, but that all the movies that did well were shit. Someone else responded "Well, it's because there's no Brony movie out."

I don't think he was factoring in kids, to be honest. I think a lot of people I know just count how many adults went to go see anything. I've actually heard people say kids don't watch Friendship Is Magic. Just adults do.

Something has to really go out of its way to hit a nerve for me for me to dislike it. The worst you'll usually hear from me is "That movie was average, I don't have a strong desire to see it again." A movie has to have such a blatant lack of shit given by absolutely everyone in who worked on it, or advocate hate speech, or hit a certain nerve to actually make me dislike it.

But every movie I saw this summer, I actually liked. Iron Man 3 (although I'm puzzled why people disliked the second one, it was my favorite of the three), Gatsby, and especially Man of Steel.
>> No. 212414

IMO "average" doesn't cut it for movies. I just don't want to pay 12 bucks for a generic, by the numbers film. And the last time I heard about a "revolutionary" movie (James Cameron's Avatar) I was swindled.

After that I really stopped caring about Hollywood Cinema.

Thing is, movies didn't become bad, you just grew up. Media is everywhere these days so you already witnesses all the experience the medium has to offer and now you feel like they aren't trying anymore, but in fact they were doing the same, you were just more ignorant.
Aiming for originality when you are an adult is stupid because everything has already be one.
>> No. 212423

While it's true that a great many things have been done repeatedly, and there's something to be said for youthful naivete, but shrugging one's shoulders and giving up on originality, THAT is stupid. That way leads to nothing but stagnation. So long as people at least TRY for originality, they're keeping the waters moving, and every now and then something fresh actually comes of it.

I agree and disagree. "Average" doesn't cut it anymore, unless all I wanted from the film was to have a good time, and it delivered on that. But I refuse to think nobody makes good films anymore. Sometimes you just have to look a little harder to find them, broaden your horizons a bit.

Honestly, I find most bronies that criticise the movie to be hypocrites, as most of the problems it has are shared by the show:

- "Cliché hurricane"? Try the vast overwhelming majority of the episodes

- Flat antagonist? Try every antagonist except maybe Discord and Nightmare Moon.

So does Beware the Batman. So what's your point? Hand drawn will always be superior to flash and CG. The only reason we keep getting CG movies is because the masses of uneducated retards still see it as new, fresh, and trendy and somehow they see it as "mature" compared to 2D. Once the luster wears off and there is no distinction between the mediums and general masses see that, it is game over for the graphic whores.

Kind of like how gaming is reaching that point where better graphics mean dick shit. Just look at the PS4 which is a low end PC no less instead of the very notable best possible graphical jump it could be.

Don't remind me. But if CG is getting cheaper like you say, then how come it still looks like shit? Look at TMNT 2012 or Transformers Prime or Beware the Batman. The human characters are lanky and frankly kind of ugly and the animation leaves lots to be desired as they can't ever match the action in a CG film like Kung Fu Panda. 2D on the other hand can have some very nice action like the Red X episode of Teen Titans or the entire Avatar series. CG has a fuck ton long ass way to go before it is a true proper replacement for 2D animation. Nevermind that CG also sucks dick at creating environments filled with life and NPCs. The cities in Transformers, Beware the Batman, and TMNT are barren wastelands for the most part.

no it's not. because even though reusable assets should go toward it, the current competition toward better and better effects force any company who want to invest in CGI to pour money like crazy to not look "last gen" CGI still doesn't age well enough to let companies use the cheap tech.
>> No. 213304

This and there are more studios nowadays that compete against Dreamworks and Disney like the upcoming Ratchet and Clank theatrical CG movie or Ice Age's studio. The competition to make the best CG animation drives up the costs something fierce.

Just because a stupid movie like Despicable Me can cash out with it being low budget doesn't mean its the standard at all (pfft and for a "low budget" it was still somewhat pricy for film standards).

This song is from the Disney movie Hocus Pocus and it was sang by Sara Jessica Parker's character (of all people in a Disney film). All in all the song and the original singer gives this video a hell of a negative connotation. In the movie Sara Jessica Parker enticed children to be sacrificed for for Bette Midler's potion of youth, but Sara Jessica Parker is famous for Sex and the City.

So all in all this video just makes Luna come off as a child abductor and child molester. So I had to thumb it down on principle. Nice animation though, superior to the show's and even better than Double Rainboom's.

So the fanbase still makes high quality vids, but is the fanbase kind of moving on and abandoning the pony mania? I don't blame them, the mediocre Season 3 eps and its atrocious finale and Equestria Girls smeared everything.

If there's one episode I will check out in Season 4 is the one obligatory for Discord because I'm still curious what Celestia planned with him after essentially neutering the character. God knows I hope it was worth raping the character with bad fanfiction writing (which it was based on fanfiction by a fanfic writer who just happened to have connections to the staff).

Anyway, now that the 1080p Equstria Girls is out I finally watched it. Not as bad as I feared, about as good as I could realistically expect. Lots of the jokes made me laugh. There are tons of show episodes from all three seasons that were worse. 6/10.

I thought the movie was fine. I mean, it wasn't as good as the better episodes but it was watchable. Some good jokes, some pop songs, human Twilight acting like a horse and embarrassing herself in a charmingly goofy fashion. I definitely thought it was better than the cringe inducing season 3 finale, which people praised for some reason. My only real complaint would be to make Flash Sentry less generic cool dude. It was just an issue of (and it's not just Bronies) me having certain hangups about people who fetishize rape, pedophilia, and beastiality, and having people who I thought were my close friends suddenly turning on me and calling me "insensitive" because I can't even take it in a fictional setting where, admittedly, no real person is getting hurt.

They get VERY defensive about the most fucked up things, don't they?

"Baaaw fursecution! In this day and age, not accepting that I like looking at cubs getting sadistically raped! What's wrong with you?"
"Just because you don't like he "subject matter", doesn't mean it's not art! Because art blablabla.."

"...It's just silly doodles! What happened to "love and tolerance"?"

It depends.

I personally like the show because it's well-animated, well-written, funny, and doesn't talk down to the audience. For me, I want to draw childrens' books or be an animator, so I want to keep tabs on what's going on in kids' media for when I'm ready.

Unfortunately, I do know people who are exclusively interested in shows with young kids just because they have a pedo kink, or anthro shows exclusively for yiffing, or shows where attractive males are bound and gagged while another guy (or girl) acts rapey over him every week. To them, it fits a kink, so it doesn't matter the quality of the show. Which in itself isn't inherently wrong, they're just specific kinks I side-eye over.

Recently read a FIM fiction about Pinkie Pie and Dan from Dan Vs.

Would Dan Vs have been more popular if Dan had a cheery social supportive Hench Girl with him as part of the main cast during his vendettas?

I dunno, but more cross promotion from those advertisements on the Hub would probably have helped.

Though admittedly I kinda stopped watching the show regularly after the start of the 3rd season even though I liked it.

Having a supportive Hench Girl worked for Joker in DCAU which cemented him as being the best animated Joker ever due to being able to be romantic, antagonistic, and funny all at once.

I think one of the reasons Dan Vs never caught on was because the show was too dry, bitter, cynical, and mean spirited in tone. Dan is an example of someone completely trampled by all the bad aspects of life, Elise is serious, and Chris is hesitantly supportive mixed with being the cautious voice of reason as he's forced into the things that happen around Dan. There was no joy in the show to help balance things out.

Essentially the show was, to make an argument Teen Titans without Starfire or Avatar without Sokka's comedic wit. As a result it wasn't very popular with kids as I think it outright depressed them.

Spongebob and FOP and even Phineas and Ferb and Adventure Time and Regular Show.

But in the case of Dan Vs, having a foil character would have given the show more substance that it desperately needed since only three main characters (often times just Dan and Chris cause Elise isn't always involved in the revenge quests) and no support cast made the show feel flat.

I don't feel it would have been fanfiction-y. In Dan Vs Family Cruise Dan did begrudgingly admit that he may have wasted his life away with his obsession for revenge. Plus in Dan Vs Ski Trip he also said he doesn't like being eternally angry and vindictive at the world. That opens the door for some characterization.

If Dan Vs wasn't ended, then its ending could only be two things. Dan stays a bitter misanthrope or finds a balance somehow.

And doubly agreed on shows that refuse to end. Dan Vs just needed a final official season where all loose ends were finally wrapped up for good.

Though it has some flaws. So after Fighting Magic was canned, Hasbro went crazy on C.A.D's, Derpy was dropped from the show and Equestria Girls became an actual thing, I sort of dropped out f the pony fandom for a while. But getting my wife to become interested in the show and comics and seeing her get to love the characters as much as I did rekindled my love for the show. So I guess even though Hasbro might be running the franchise into the ground, I can still appreciate how awesome it was (and at least how awesome the comic still is)

The last episode of the third season was half atrocious, but there's tons of Derpy goodness... if you can find her. She's also on EqG, in style.

Also I haven't seen many C&Ds as far as I recall. There was Fighting is Magic, a set of fan-made coins, one guy that was selling on-model toys (well that was more than expected, really), and one of the MMORPGs.

But yeah, if you wanna keep like, the end of season 2 as the end of the show for yourself, that's probably as good as it gets.
>> No. 215365
I don't understand why Derpy is such a selling point for people. She's nothing more than a background character for me, one with no official backstory and one line (which is all I ever expected her to get).

I don't see the big deal for Time Turner, Octavia, Vinyl Scratch, etc. either. I don't focus on much outside the Mane Six.
>> No. 215367

On one point, it's kind of a "you had to be there" thing for the early fans. She was a passing joke, bronies found her, it became a thing between the animators and us. A bit of it applies for Dr Whooves (lots of early /co/mrades were into Dr Who), Leaping Lyra and stuff like that. Some just like their designs or identify with what they do (DJs are pretty popular for instance, right?), and so on.

Also it's a Where's Waldo thing, it's just neat to look for her there, maybe with something wacky going on. If a show like this loses some of the light-hearted humor potential, you know it's going the wrong way.

Oh yeah not saying "OBVIOUS Dr Who homage was OBVIOUS". Nah, likely it was just the fans making a joke that stuck, in this case. But after that, I think even the animators decided to play with the idea (including other Doctors lookalikes and stuff), that's the thing.

Big Mac isn't even outgoing enough to seek any female interaction (hell the CMC had to force him). And Luna as opposed to the other winged unicorn characters is the most regal and proper about traditionalism and the royal ways. Oh sure Cadence married a commoner, but why Big Mac? He helps Luna on a scavenger hunt or something, so maybe she's just thanking him.
And Mac isn't really going after any mares (he's pretty oblivious, even to Cheerilee, guess they just don't particularly like the ship), he just "forgot to turn his swagger off" I guess, that's probably the whole joke, and that's not even the focus of the story.

Heck, I've even seen fanartists draw regular pegusi with, say, Fluttershy having big fluffy wings, Rainbow Dash having sleeker, speedier ones. That's what I was thinking too. Again with the fanart, I usually see him drawn as a human as a big studly Southern guy with shaggy hair, so maybe he's attractive to them, but he's either oblivious, too much of a workaholic to date, or they're in a Kingdom Hearts "no relationships, ever" situation.

I hadn't given that much thought before, figured it might be a cosmetic thing too. Guess we have a new mythological horse/pony type from the show now.

Back in the end of season 1, one of the animators actually mentioned the crew loved seeing more varied versions of the ponies and that they couldn't do that exactly because of the style and the flash animation. They even asked in general to see some fanart like that, pity I never got to give it a shot.

As for Big Mac, well, he looks the family type, so not one to fool around much. Besides, he already lives with a bunch of mares, probably is up to the ears with girls' problems already.

My headcanon is still that he's a sort of natural resource for the Ponyville mares though.
