Anthony Bourdain here, all others are insignificant. I'm proud to share a first name with him.

But Bourdain isn't really a chef at all. He's made like, three dishes in his life and hit it big just doing hella drugs and travel writing.

That's why he's my waifu

Read his book, Kitchen Confidential. He was a professional cook for nearly 30 years before he quit it in favor of being paid to bum around the world, drink, eat and talk about nothing in particular.

Yeah, but these days he's not cool because he's a chef. He's cool because he's a man who happened to have once been a chef among other things.

My veeeery first instinct is to jump to the kneejerk reaction of "Well that's basically the Food Network for you, really."

But there are plenty of chefs on there, though it's nearly inarguable that a good portion of them are running purely on star power and not on passion for the art.

The funny thing is, you get people like Anthony Bourdain, Adam Richman (and that other guy) who are, in their own ways, deeply passionate about it, and aren't restaurant-owning chefs with cooking shows.

THAT. HAVING. BEEN. SAID.

We can't really say jack shit about Anthony in terms of talent, because most of us, myself included, have never seen him prepare jack shit beyond some of the minor things he's made on his show No Reservations.

Yes, yes it is. And damn if that man is respectable even with being on ICA. Argh.

All I've got to say on the subject is this, thusly:
Hiroyuki Sakai.

I'm taking offense at this, either because you forgot Alton Brown's name, or you just forgot about Alton Brown.

THE HELL IF I FORGET ABOUT ALTON BROWN. Not a chance in hell that is, that I'd do anything of the sort.

I don't even need to mention Alton Brown.

I was referring to Andrew Zimmern, since I was talking about the TRAVEL Network at that point, bro. They have a habit of hiring guys with names that start with A, which cracks me up. I can't stand the guy anymore, but once upon a time I really appreciated the way he was up anything.

Thing is, he's only up for anything in a culinary sense. Culture rituals weird him out so much that it just makes for bad television, since he won't shut up about how weird it is.

I've been watching Alton ever since I got turned on to cooking shows and started down the pretty damn complicated road that is learning how to cook good food.

I'd say though that Alton is kind of like a mentor to me though, the guy who taught me everything I know. Whereas Hiroyuki Sakai is the kind of chef I aspire to be.

Never the less. Pic related, it's the badass himself. (Seriously I loved Feasting on Asphalt almost as much as Good Eats. So awesome.)
