It's not a good reason if you beat him every time you encounter him. I don't think I've ever lost to Blue in any of my playthroughs, even the first time around with my waaaaaay overleveled Charizard.

Silver is a terrible character and one of the worst rivals in the series. He goes on and on about hating weaklings, but loses to you seven or eight times. Then, despite losing every battle against you, he somehow realizes that all this time he was wrong just because Lance curb-stomped him. Lance, who's Goku hair and constipated glare defined the idea of the ICE-COLD FINAL BOSS, manages to magically heal Silver's wounded heart with a victory and a sentence, making him believe in LOVE and the power of friendship. After that, the next time you meet him he's changed his entire outlook on life... And still loses. He stays good, though, despite how a loss is what made him change his mind in the first place.

The main thing about Silver are the contradictions between his words and his actions. He goes on and on about hating weaklings and how you're weak, even though he loses. He blames his loss on his weak pokemon, but he still uses the same team through the entire game. If he changed his team a lot after each loss, then lost against Lance, you could have him hit with the realization: "Hey, I'm the only common factor in all of these battles, maybe I should change!" But his losing to you a few days later would completely undue that. "Oh, lost again, I guess it wasn't me after all. Back to beating my pokemon with a tire iron!"

Or if you had him established as a firm believer in the concept of Might Makes Right (as opposed to someone who just want's power to differentiate themselves from their father), then have Lance defeat him through strength alone and tell him to stop beating his pokemon with a tire iron, his sudden change of heart would make a little more sense.

I admit, my entire love of Silver centers on the fact he fucking punts you across the screen at the start of the game. It's the only time in a Pokemon game anything remotely like that happens, and it amuses me to no end.

Other than that, Wally is the only one I like as a character. I don't really care about how they stack up as rivals since I'm destined to steamroll them anyway.
