AKA Stuff you forgot about or missed but Oda didn't.

So, with the ending of the war coming up soon (as it has been for the last month or so, kinda like its been the mid point of the series since Skypeia), and my my recent acquisition of a ludicrous amount of free time, I decided that the best way to end the first part of the Grand Line was to read the entire series, all the way from chapter 1. This time though, I'll try to keep an eye out for small details that are easily skimmed over, and which many of us missed completely. For example, did you notice that Chopper didn't like the Bon Chari race in Sabaody? Look at his face on chapter 497, page 12. Please correct any of the things you see that are incorrect, because some of the early stuff can be way off the mark (BINAMI).

This will be a semi-marathon for me, and I'll be reading from around the time I post this to about 7 hours from now (5-12 central time) every day until I finish or die from lack of meaningful social interaction. Also, I won't stop, even if there is little interest in the thread, though I guess it'll turn from semi-"Lets Read" to "some dude monopolizes the first thread indefinitely." You might want to block the thread.

ALRIGHT WHATEVER LETS GO.

Check out Shank's old ship. Looks very similar to the Red Force. Also, Shanks stayed at Luffy's village for an entire year. He was already dueling with Mihawk at this point, so who knows what he was doing hanging around here for a year.

Also, the narrator boxes haven't changed at all.

Quite possibly one of the most important parts of the entire series shoved into a single, tiny panel. Maybe Higuma distracted him, but Luffy doesn't even seem to notice the devil fruit's terrible taste down there.

Bounty is a measure of combat power and threat to the government. Higuma sucks, so if Kidd's bounty is only higher than Luffy's because he killed a ton of people, and killing 56 people only gets you 8 million, that means that Kidd must have been very busy.

The fact that they are mountain bandits means two things:
1. There are mountains, despite the fact that everything looks like plains.
2. The place where the village is located is far enough away from them that they can't be seen

Also, take note that there is "another village" within walking distance. Sometimes there are arguments about were Ace lived, but these facts make it likely that he lived, if not in Fuschia, then at least nearby.

I'm back. I guess I wasn't ready for UNLIMITED FREE TIME. Whatever.

This is another page that doesn't really have many details but will become important later on for blatantly obvious (now) reasons. Earlier chapters aren't as packed as they are now, so there probably won't be many things until Loguetown, I'm guessing. That's were I remember the series really getting packed.

Now, nobody will doubt the fact that Shanks is a nice guy that would gladly give up his life for a friend, but at Sabaody we learned that Luffy said something that Roger did back then (meaning, likely from the third page to this one). Since Shanks likely met Roger when he was already a pirate for some time (because Shanks was an "apprentice," whatever that means) what he said would have unlikely to have been any of Luffy's "let me go with you" stuff. While nothing in the chapter really stood out in terms of Roger-iness, this line is something I can easily see come out of a pirate of any level. This is just a guess though, but one that immediately preceded The Hat, so maybe...

Anime watchers might not know that the Alvida arc was originally located on and uncharted island. The island somehow remained uncharted despite the fact that compasses work and the pirates suck in East Blue. It goes to show just how little of the One Piece world is full of misteries, even outside the Grand Line.

Luffy had a single barrel on his ship when he set out, probably grog because Luffy is a proven underage drinker, and a bag (of food, probably). By this time he had probably drunk everything (and its a really good barrel) because his clothes are dry here, which means that the thing in report time about killing and eating large fish is true. Wait, he survived a whirlpool by HIDING IN A BARREL?

Its not a mistake, because a few pages later he talks about having to stay for a month. Whatever, check out how Zoro stood up to an oppressive authority by ATTACKING IT WITH HIS SWORD in front of a crowd of people who would likely do the same if they weren't afraid of retribution, despite the fact that he likely didn't know the consequences of doing so. NEO FANWANK- SON OF THE SECOND
Even though Zoro got his 100% crewmate chapter, here we find the egg that hatched inot the wriggling intestinal worm which infested the bodies of quite a few Zoro fans back in the day. Would their Precious get into a fight with Luffy and end up leaving the crew, and by extension, the spotlight? Yet, I'm sure all of you remember that fateful chapter where Zoro's loyalty was completely, irreversibly proven. I can guarantee that if we ever get a chapter titled "Strawhat Pirate: Black Leg Sanji" then the fans are likely to fanwank themselves into a coma in expectation for the others.

Anyway, I'll go ahead and clarify my "mission statement." I won't be doing a complete story synopsis, just pointing out things that catch my eye. That means that there may be times were I skip large chunks of story where plot that are actually critical, for example Luffy and Garp talking, if I don't find any details that not everyone knows. Also, I will talk about the current chapter if something connects to it, but will pretend that spoilers don't exist.

So, did anyone ever wonder about those cannons on the Big Top? It seems they go all the way through the wood, where they are probably reloaded. Perhaps they can be swiveled up and down, too. Or maybe its bulit so they can fire on their own deck, it dunno.

Either Oda already knew that Luffy was going to be the son of a guy named Dragon and put in this little Dracula thing as the most shadowy foreshadowing that comes to mind or he made this, though it was pretty cool, and decided to make his dad's name Dragon. When Buggy and Shanks were in the crew they still believed that Devil fruits were a rumor. So, this is actually something that I see most people get wrong. The Red Line doesn't go north to south, its on a slant. Similarly, the Grand Line is not the equator. Remember, just because compasses don't work in the Grand Line doesn't mean that they don't work outside of it, which means the first map's compass rose is accurate. It also means that the North Pole is located in North Blue, while the South Pole is in South Blue. Even I though that both were on or near the Red Line until I looked at these maps just now.

Everyone picks on Oda for taking that whole "Diamond is the hardest metal known to man" thing literally, but the originator wasn't Jose (when it comes to translation, always follow your heart. Well, I guess this where that all the people who think the Red Line goes north to south, despite the fact that the compass behind it is tilted. It seems to be consistent with Nami's map, too. Ever since Oda said in an interview that Shanks was right in saying that the South Pole was colder because it was a frozen continent I though Oda might have forgotten to take the OP world into account. However, it seems as though the Red Line does get thicker in South Blue, meaning that the OP South Pole would be located on a frozen (section of the) continent. Insert a cold pun here, if you wish.

I'm really feeling the fact that its been more than a year without the crew when I read these chapters. I think this is my favorite of Zoro's fights (Mr. 1 and Ryuuma in constant battle for number two), and I recommend everyone watch it. Later fights might have had better choreography/animation, but this one was definitely the best thematically. Its pretty hard not injecting your own opinions when you do something like this, by the way.

Also, I was right about Sanji's Diable Jambe (ha!), and also noticed that most of the time, during this fight, he kicks with his right leg. This is the same leg that Zeff lost. Can legs be dominant? If so, it seems that Zeff was left legged (because why would you eat your dominant leg?) and either taught Sanji this way or Sanji is left legged too.

I have no idea what I'm talking about. Sanji kicks with his right.

Oda tends to make puns by spelling the foreign words in kana, and then giving them kanji to go with it. Diable Jambe in french means Devil leg, but it's also Devil Wind Leg thanks to Oda being clever and giving Kanji to a foreign term. The wiki says that Diable jambe is also a style of cooking.

Anyways, Oda always has these ridiculously punny names for attacks.
Like, 108 pound hou is Phoenix of 108 Desires (108 desires is a Buddhist concept) and 108 pound cannon (a cannon that fires 108 pound cannonballs).
In fact, I think everyone knows about that one, so I better go bone up on my japanese puns (or the wiki).

Hopefully the Krieg fight will be as empty as the Kuro fight, because my head start this time is much smaller.

So, since Zeff spent one year in the grand line and Sanji was ten at the time this happened, that means that at the latest Zeff entered the grand line 10 years from the current story, which seems to be likely seeing as how the Orbit's crew didn't know that Zeff was back. Apparently, coming back from the grand line is a big deal, at least in East Blue.

Also, Sanji's jolly roger is exactly the same as Zeff's, only with a skull instead of a duck.

Even taking into account the leg, it means that Sanji and Zeff went without food for two whole months. Here, its not "as strong as Jimbei," its "stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Jimbei." Now that we know that Jimbei wasn't the original captain of the Fishman Pirates this confusion sorts itself out nicely. When Fisher Tiger was captain, Jimbei and Arlong were equal. Something, probably Fisher Tiger's death, transfered the rank of captain to Jimbei. Sometime after, Jimbei accepted an invitation to join the Shichibukai for reasons unknown (possibly the treaty talked about in Sabaody) and the group splintered into small groups like the Macro Pirates.

Holy shit VPN is the best thing ever. I love wrestling with connections while they tear at each other like angry snakes.

Anyway, back to This Thing. While I wouldn't say that most people forgot about this, as more and more information on Garp piles up it becomes stranger and stranger. Garp, who used to be admiral-class and doesn't seem to have lost much strength, traveling out to the wussiest sea in the world to apprehend a guy that never posed a significant combat threat to even Luffy or Zoro. It might be possible that high-ranking Marines are always dispatched during manners of Marine corruption (hyuk hyuk) and Garp just happened to be interested in going. It seems as though Morgan's base was pretty close to Fuschia and Luffy wasn't known as a pirate, so maybe Garp wanted to visit him?

Hundreds of topics on every One Piece forum as far as the eye can see: ZOMG ZORO SWORDS, theory: zoro's new swords, Hey guys did you notice those two swords, Weapon prediction: Zoro edition.

Everyone would be talking about how they fit thematically in conjunction with Wado Ichimonji and how they represent different aspects of Zoro's personality and how it only seems fitting that the shark-themed Zoro would be getting his new swords from the strongest sharkman in the sea and how much it sucks that Zoro didn't get them and they were a waste of designs and whatever.

Just goes to show, there have always been general zombies in the story.

Luffy>>>>Arlong=Jimbei

Jimbei 4 nakama.
I still honestly believe that this is the exact point where One Piece became near-irreversibly awesome (some would say epic but if you are one of those people I don't think I could stand any sort of prolonged conversation with you). All of the previous, independently great parts of the arc like Nami's past, "Luffy, help me," and the confrontation with the Arlong pirates join together in this page and punch One Piece into a state where even Oda intentionally trying to make it suck has a chance of failing.

Nami has already been referred to as a kitten by Genzo back during her flashback when she stole the book, but I didn't notice that it connects to "cat burglar" until I saw it here. I am almost certain that the original japanese word used here is nakama. Some translators refuse to change it, because the word has connotations that can't be completely replicated by anything in the English language. However, friend seems so much creepier here and sweeter when Luffy says it later that I think it was actually the correct choice. This is the difference between direct translation (or lack of it) and localization. While being direct might spare you from crashing an burning, it also has trouble reaching the level of a well made localization.

If all of the temporary arc allies joined the crew, it would be the size of other commonly seen pirate groups (if only the important members of groups like the Rumbars and Franky Family are counted) and few people could complain about it being too impersonal for Luffy. More mistranslations. Wado Ichimonji isn't one of the 21 best swords, its one of the 21 o-wazamono, the second highest sword ranking. Shuusui is in the same rank, which means that Sandai Kitetsu is technically Zoro's worst sword. Then again, the rankings probably don't take curses into account.

I like it better now (unlike Tashigi, who I liked better here) because the handguard has become more distinctive and looks more like a cross now. Surprisingly, this time Tashigi is nearly irrelevant. Yubashiri was one grade lower than Wado Ichimonji, which means that it was always the go-to sword for destruction. Wado Ichimonji getting broken is a pretty big no, while Sandai Kitetsu can pretty much only be replaced by another Kitetsu since the line suits Zoro so well. Yubashiri, however, was just good enough for its destruction being a Pretty Big Deal.

Every devil fruit user is immune to the immediate effects of his fruit, even when they logically shouldn't be (Califa's bubbles don't drain her strength, for example). So, Dragon hiding from the effect of "his" wind doesn't make any sense. Also, while there are times when people talk when they shouldn't Dragon here is turned away and his mouth is firmly closed (also, you can't see anything he might have in his hands). Furthermore, Stephen translates this line as "It's a squall!!!!", making it even more unlikely that Dragon is speaking.

Oda has been known to plan ahead to major points in the story, and the point the story is at is undeniably the most major of all since my last page.

In fact, the only thing my theory needed for some time was something or someone to connect my last page and this one together. Thanks Kuma.

Once this arc is over (COMEDY!) I recommend reading the Blackbeard vs. Ace chapters, then from the time the crew reaches the Red Line Again to the end. I would also recommend that as a starting point for anyone who adamantly refuses to start from the beginning.

The Grandline really is a pirate graveyard, its just that none of the pirates wussy enough to get killed in the first half are ever shown on-screen. Oh wait, the Frog/Toad pirates, which got taken down by FOXY and some sea monkeys. Its not often you remember things that contradict you yet forward your argument.

Welcome back to Rereading One Piece: Late-night Post-April Fools Bunker Edition: the Unbunkerning.

Whiskey Peak only lasted a single day. I don't think anyone had any problems with this and I doubt anyone actually though otherwise. However, there is a pretty large problem with the timeline coming up in a few chapters, and I'll be talking about it when I get there.

I almost miss the time when mysterious devil fruit premiers looked like telekinesis/whatever and what they really did was left unsaid for a decent amount of time. I'm sure the current superhuge fanbase would get a kick out of trying to think of possible fruit powers. All the powers nowadays only get a chapter or two between their premier and their effects (except for that whole Absalom thing. A warning to readers: throughout today's session I will be venting shitty but not impossible theories that I mainly pull out of my ass, "literary analysis" style, while reading. They will be supported by random factoids which may or may not be relevant/coherent/existent. I will be doing this in retaliation for everyone else blasting shitty but not impossible news at me all of yesterday, despite the fact that it is nearly impossible that any of you were responsible. It's like karma, in the way that 90's comic book protagonists were like super heroes.

The hand is coming out of his back and grabbing the very edge of his hat. Robin is an incredibly skilled hat-tosser.

Doesn't Usopp hide behind the mast later on when Robin shows upon the ship unexpectedly? Oh boy, I love finding new things to forget about checking.

The fact that Robin takes the hat is a symbolic parallel to Luffy giving Nami his hat in the Arling arc. Robin taking it represents her forcing herself into the crew, while Luffy dropping it on Nami represents her inability to argue against it. The other hat that Robin is wearing represents the shields she set up for herself while she was on the crew. She'll get a proper hat-on-bare-head scene during or before her The Nth chapter.

It would be so great if hat-flipping proficiency became one of Robin's official skills.
One of the strangest parts of these early chapters in the fact that the crew is extremely small. For me, If the crew doesn't have everyone up to Robin it doesn't really feel like the strawhats. I guess it must be different depending on when you started reading One Piece. Maybe new people think the crew without Franky feels off?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that random encounters like this are meant to indicate the passage of time during trips that take multiple days. It allows for time skips of ambiguous amounts of days after the strawhats get away from whatever is threatening/confusing/exciting them.

The giant dolphin is a metaphor for the fact that even happy frolicking is likely to be dangerous on the Grand Line. Their initial positive response towards the creature is in line with how all of us would welcome a break from the harshness of our lives. However, in this ocean, there is actually no difference between the harshness and the reprieve; they are actually one and the same.

When you're a cowardly planner who fights with candles, you tend to allow guys like Crocodile and Luffy the vanguard. It's also worth pointing out that the superheated portions of the prison would melt his wax. As for Shiryuu... his name is supposedly based on the Japanese name (Tei Shiryu) of Zheng Zhilong / Nicholas Iquan Gaspard, a famed Chinese pirate. Apparently.

Teach was a member of the strongest pirate crew in the world, later one of the seven pirates with the closest connection to the world government (and as such in the best position to ask for favors), and has a crewmember with outstanding movement and infiltration abilities, yet did not think to obtain improved weapons from any source at any time. Theses weapons would have been extremely useful to him, by the way, as he used what could possibly be his shitty flintlocks against WHITEBEARD.

So yeah, any top tier not using the best available weapons is pretty much a chump (or unnecessarily handicapping themselves, which Blackbeard isn't know to do).

Nami doesn't seem to care too much about rebellions normally, as seen when she talked about the coup d'etat in Vila with little interest, so this news probably only mattered to her once Vivi was traveling with them. That means that this newspaper is (flimsy) proof that at least 3 days passed between Whiskey Peak and Little Garden (since they seem to have arrived and left the same day).

Half of the entire military force defecting really shows how bad the situation in Alabasta is. The fact that the standing army is at least 600,000 soldiers strong also shows how big the Kingdom is. Oh wow, "South" is pretty much the most worthless directional command you can give. Pointing a random direction and saying "lets go that way" is pretty much the equivalent command, except that your crew won't spend a few seconds talking about it and wandering around confused before doing anything.

So, this would be day 2 of the infection. I think that they arrive at Drum later this day, but I also remember Kureha treating Nami after 3 days of infection, so there must have been a day there somewhere.

Now that I think about it, isn't it a bad idea for the King of a World Government aligned country to pose as a pirate, even with a submersible ship?

I guess that bottom part is where the Drum military lives, which makes lessens my last statement.
