ITT: Villains/Antagonists you enjoy

Well with the way certain serials once considered peers of equal quality to One Piece have been handling their ultimate villains rather poorly, let's have a thread to appreciate how interesting, vulnerable, brilliant, fun and creative Oda's bad guys are.

Case in point, Blackbeard, who not only dares to be hideous in a genre saturated by pretty boy demoniacs but is surprisingly not ridiculously overpowered, having to exert actual effort and cunning in his plans.

Woah woah woah woah woah -- hold up. I did NOT know Kizaru was gonna be in Z. When did this happen? How is this gonna fit in to the plot? Shit.

Oh right. Now I recall why I don't find Kizaru all that threatening.

Cause in my mind he's Jeff Goldblum, and every time he talks I just imagine Jeff Goldblum doing a Bela Lagosi impression (ala in that Goosbumps game) or him doing that spiel from Jurassic park about God creating Dinosaurs.

And I'll be damned the day I find Jeff Goldblum intimidating.

I could see Jeff Goldblum pulling off "intimidating"....but not in the sense of "Oh my god, he's going to kick my ass," and more in the sense of "I don't want to sleep in the same room as this person because he's probably going to cut me in my sleep." He could do creepy-intimidating, but not badass-intimidating.

Very, very few of the One-Piece villains have, in my eyes, any chance at being returning threats. Most of them had their lives improved by defeat (Crocodile rediscovering his dreams and returning to the sea, Enel conquering the moon, Wapol becoming a successful businessman) became the Straw Hats' allies (Buggy, Bon Clay, Foxy if the anime is anything to go by) have no real means or motivation to seek vengeance (Magellan or Krieg chasing Luffy seems implausible) or ended up so utterly broken that there's really no way for them to return (Morgan, Kuro and Jones come to mind). Hell, even Arlong is out of the picture given what we've seen in Fishman Island, Spandam is plotting against the former CP9 with his dad, and Bellamy is dead.

I get the feeling most future villains in One-Piece are either people the Strawhats haven't opposed directly (Akainu, Doflamingo, Big Mom, Kaido, Blackbeard) or are people we know nothing about.

That having been said, ol' Croco D. Isle is my favorite villain for his absolute smugness and Blackbeard wins out as being a brilliant overall design for a series's big bad.
>> No. 27822
But isn't Croc's rediscovered dream basically the same as his original dream, only instead of skulking in Paradise he's skulking in the New World? Would you be the least bit surprised if he was one of the people bidding on Caesar's WMD? I wouldn't.

Yes and no.

Remember, Crocodile was stated as having started out very similar to Luffy, but time and circumstance eroded him into a bitter jackass whose solution to betrayal and loss was to sever all personal connections and treat everyone as disposable pawns who'd stab you in the back if they ever got the chance. He had spent decades as a background manipulator insulated by layer upon layer of deceit and guilde, trusting nobody and engineering a bloody civil war for his own gain.

It was defeat at Luffy's hands, a younger and still idealistic version of himself who refused to buckle as he had, and subsequent daring rescue by the very Baroque Works agents he had intended to sacrifice in his plan, that helped him remember what it was originally about. (Having Goldenweek literally spell it out for him probably helped) Then, after getting his hand(s) dirty again breaking out of Impel Down with Luffy, to whom he bore no ill will, and then fighting against and later alongside his old nemesis, he set back out into the seas as a legitimate pirate once more.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he's involved in unscrupulous shit or even ends up scraping with Luffy again in some capacity. I simply feel that, like Buggy, he's become less an antagonist and more a supporting character.

But that's just how I see it.

>It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he's involved in unscrupulous shit or even ends up scraping with Luffy again in some capacity. I simply feel that, like Buggy, he's become less an antagonist and more a supporting character.
I'd call that a fair assessment of both Crocodile and Buggy's roles in the future. They've gone from villains to wild cards, and they've got their own shit going on but it's not necessarily something that will require intervention on the part of the heroes one way or the other.
>> No. 27825
Ideally, Buggy would have small side stories of him trying to run shit in the first half of the Grand Line trying to eat up the scraps while everyone else is out fighting in the New World. That way old characters could show up and we could get more in depth information on how the first half has changed since the time skip.

But no, I'm betting Oda will have Buggy's weak ass somehow make it into the New World and we'll probably have him shoved down our throats for an arc
>> No. 27826
>>27825
Buggy can be a fun character when given the right roles; he's not really the nuisance people make him out to be. Especially after the anime got done wrecking his asshole in Impel Down and Marineford. And as a Warlord, he would have access to the New World. Or certain parts of it, anyway.

He's going to be in Z? That's interesting I guess. Doubt he will really take part in the plot though, more likely he will just make some kind of lesser appearance.

As far as I know, he'll only be in one scene where he's shown fighting Z in what may or may not be a flashback of sorts. Most likely something similar to the opening scenes of Strong World with Garp and Sengoku.

Oh yeah, 'Z'. Is it fair to say I'm just really not feeling it about this guy?

He's being hyped as fuck which is understandable seeing as he's the big enemy of the movie, "Former admiral" and "Strongest enemy the Strawhats have faced yet". But looking at him he comes across as just,,,, generally kind of lame, when you compare him to the Admirals of the actual series.
Obviously we have to wait to see him 'in action', maybe he'll be a really impressive/interesting character in all regards, who knows.

If I know my One Piece movies, which I only sorta do since I don't rewatch them and so it's been like 6-8 years since I saw most of them, what will happen is that one or both of the songs will play during the credits. If it's just one then the other one will play during a not too important part near the start of the movie. Since they're calling "Bad Reputation" the theme of the movie then that's the one that's probably going to be playing during the credits, giving you ample time to stop watching. If that song at the end of the trailer is the other song of hers then it would be the one that plays near the beginning, and while it's less skippable it's also less terrible.

Either way you will PROBABLY only have to suffer through one of them.
>> No. 28799
Wait nevermind I just found out that both of the songs will be played during the credits. Something else by someone else who doesn't suck is going to play during the intro.

Speaking of bad guys, and the One Piece Z movie, I wonder how good Z's underlings are going to be? I mean in the trailer we saw two people who might fit the bill, a guy who can apparently make plants grow superfast/big and a blue-haired chick who seems like she can touch you and turn you into a child (Isn't the Bonney's ability?)

The difference could be in the "anything" bit. Maybe her ability isn't to change the ages of people, but to change, say, cheese into milk or swords into lumps of iron or something.
>> No. 28944
>>28943
I think she changed Nami into a little girl in the trailer, but you could be right in her ability to regress the age of things she touches applies to objects as well as people to make it different than the other age-modifying fruit? If not it would just be a boring and gimped version of it.

Well we see her in her new movie 'red army' outfit so obviously she gets changed back somehow. But as for the how maybe the effect only lasts so long (youth is fleeting...) or maybe Ain can consciously undo it/if you beat her unconscious maybe it stops working like with Shiki's ability to make things float.

...SPEAKING OF SHIKI-
He had a cool design, his df power was pretty neat and godly, his movie was awesome...but does anyone else think his plan was retarded?
He spent 20 years making these giant aggressive animals, which to be fair are fairly fearsome and would certainly devastate the weak East Blue islands easily....but why didn't he just use his levitations abilities to drop some of the floating islands he was capable of making on them?
Total devastation and without the the 20 year waiting period.
Plus using his ability to float and drop large bodies of water would be a more useful assault against the more powerful DF-user enemies he might encounter than those animals, though likely he wasn't truly thinking as far as facing the cream of the marines to take over the world than he was with destroying East Blue because of his obsession with Roger.
>> No. 28953
>>28948
his obsession with Roger was what more than likely fueled his plan

He didn't just want to simply crush and destroy East Blue, he wanted to make it suffer and enjoy it from up high

This guy as a character might not have been all that great a villain but bloody hell did he have an arsenal.

It was less like a suit of armour and more like some sort of super powered-armour, I'm amazed all those guns and ammo and what have you fit in something like that.

You know what? He was my favorite East Blue villain. His fight with Luffy felt the most intense to me, much moreso than the Arlong fight, despite that one having more emotional baggage.

And you know, in a way, Krieg won that fight.
If Sanji hadn't been there to pull Luffy out of the water, and if Gin hadn't flattened him with that last blow, Luffy would have drowned while Krieg was still standing. Not a fair win, by any means, and if Luffy hadn't been incapacitated he would've finished Krieg himself, but hey, you take what you can get, right?

I've seen some clips from the film regarding her.

Obviously this is SPOILERS but apparently she's going to be Zoro's opponent in the film... and she actually goes basically toe to toe with him in a face to face battle!? This is most unusual for One Piece...

As for >>28942 well obviously enough as the only major officer left he goes to Sanji, fights all ninja style with the addition of growing plants around him

Sure its awesome to see them get their shit wrecked but as individuals they are pretty pathetic, they have no power, ability or intelligence and just rely on the fact they are so pampered and 'royal' that everyone does what they say to fufill their base and petty whims.
Its not like they have any plans, they just bumble along, slave-taking, stealing women to be their wives, or shooting little children that happen to be in their path

The only way Krieg could come back as a threat now if he turned into a cyborg.

That way he could keep his theme of being a walking armory of weapons while being made stronger.

Maybe it was done against his will and he's just a captain in someone else's cyborg army Gin crippled from the poison gas exposure would willing undergo cyborg-modification after he was unable to save his captain from it, simply so he could continue to serve under and protect his boss.

His reckless final gambit on Thriller Bark and his so-so performance during the Whitebeard War aside, you got to admire that despite having been thoroughly beaten by Kaidou, he still wants to take on the Yonkou for vengeance while his fellow ex-Warlord, Doflamingo, is either too cowardly or sane to even entertain the idea.
