Saw the film. Only complaints were that China and Russia did jack shit, Ron Pearlman's stuff was kind of pointless, and the Category 5 was kind of underwhelming[spoiler].

Favorite part was [spoiler]when the acid spitting lizard one revealed IT COULD FUCKING FLY and then Gypsy Danger WHIPS OUT A SWORD AND GUTS IT
. Fucking fantastic.

Really wish the Pacific Rim negative reviews weren't a mixture of "Its kiddie shit therefore I hate it." "I'm going to hate on this and hope for its failure in order to force Del Toro back into making the movies I want him to make." and "I don't like/understand Kaiju films therefore this is shit" While there are some good points there overall attitude really does a disservice to the criticism. Also the one Variety asshole giving Del Toro shit for not doing some piece about Mexico.

Guh! Variety has been giving this movie shit since the beginning!

And besides! Half the movies he's done were B horror flicks in the Guadalajara indie circle.
(Would I like to see a Mexican Jaeger? Sure. Would I be appeased with a "Resorteras Nucleares Patentadas por la UNAM" joke? Just as much, yes. No one in the press here's really cared beyond general enthusiasm over the flick and seeing a countryman do the name good.)

Anyway, tldr fuck Variety.
The producer on this flick must've had a bad spat with the editor sometime back or something, thats usually where this sorta thing comes from.

I completely agree with everything in this post. Prior to that scene, I also enjoyed Gypsy Danger hitting it over the head with a freaking tanker. Also, GLAdOS.

However, I also add the same complaint that I had for Bayformers, in that there was too much human focus and not enough robot-on-monster action. Not nearly as bad as Bayformers, but more than once I thought "come on someone punch a monster's head already".

Otherwise an extremely fun movie, and it pretty well fit my "Power Rangers for Adults" idea. I just hope that they don't make a sequel, because this is the kind of thing that really only works well once every ten-ish years or so.

Yea whatever it was they seemed to want to kill the hype before it ever had a chance, but hopefully those Thursday numbers will bode well for the Weekend and it will beat WWZ numbers. Course if it passed that the next big test is Japan. Its already got support from a good number of those in the Japanese Mecha Genre community, here is hoping that the public takes to it as well.

Also love how many negative reviews describe it as >>37909 this but bigger and louder and I try to figure out how that is a bad thing.

"Power Rangers on really good Acid"

"Transformers mixed with Godzilla"

"Transformers fighting Rubber Dinosaurs in a Bathtub"

"Bigger more expensive power rangers"

How is that bad I've no clue. But then again I've likely got experience with this genre then they do and that isn't much.

> there was too much human focus and not enough robot-on-monster action.

Totally agree. At most they should have had one zany scientist, not two, and Hannibal Chau the black market dealer should have been excised completely. That would have easily cut down at least 15, 20 minutes that could have been devoted to more action.

In general, the fight scenes were better choreographed, better shot, and better edited than Bayformers. I'm pretty happy with them, I just wanted more.
>> No. 37916
Honestly I liked the scientist and the black market subplots. I thought they helped give the world and setting more of an expansive focus than just focusing on the robot pilot action would have.

WITH ALL THAT SAID THOU

I think the movie needed another fight scene. Not because PEW PEW I LOVE EXPLOSIONS AND ROBUTTS but because I felt like the Russian and Chinese Jaegers needed a chance to actually shine before they got bitched out. Plus the scene where Mako gets lost in the memory also needed more of an immediate sense of threat than OH GOD SHE'S GONNA FIRE THE PLASMA CANNON IN THE BASE I'm like what.

What they should've done is had another Kaiju (possibly a pair) attack in some place close by like Japan or something where they could feasibly get to. Then Cherno and Coyote get to tango a bit with the thing, show off their moves, but Gypsy Danger winds up going haywire cause Mako follows the rabbit and she almost gets the mech destroyed but Eureka saves them, which further enforces the Aussie Pilots mistrust of the two and better shows that Raleigh and Mako simply aren't ready yet.

Then! When Cherno and Coyote go to defend Hong Kong with Eureka off to the side, you introduce the two category 4's have them fight them off a bit THEN have one of them reveal the knockout power button which is what causes Coyote and Cherno to go down. Now you've shown that your enemies aren't just monsters they're also damn cheaters too, at least in the minds of the audience.

This makes Gypsy Dangers entrance a lot more poignant to show that Mako and Raleigh (who fyi really needed a goddamn training montage together or something) have improved as partners.

THERE! I've just made your film flow better. Gimme a million dollars Del Toro.

Okay so now that I'm less high on HOLY SHIT IS THAT A TANKER, I've thought on it some more and have come up with what I think is probably a more final list of issues.

1. The entire Wall plotline is fucking stupid. Yes they actually bring this up in the film, but it's so stupid that it shouldn't have been in there at all. It's only point and purpose in existing is to cut down on the number of Jaegers, which you could do better by simply saying the pilots present are those that Idris considers the best in the world while the others are off defending the coast elsewhere.
2. China and Russia did jack for crap in this movie and it's total bullshit.
3. Probably could have used more/better female characters. Mako wasn't great and the Russian chick, again, did nothing.
4. Raleigh's actor is a droner. I'm actually not sure if I should have this here or not because for some reason I like Raleigh, even though he is basically Maverick from Top Gun.
5. Category 5 needed to be more impressive I think. Maybe even just bigger.
6. Black Market stuff ultimately served little purpose besides world building, which is cool but does not serve film flow much. I kind of suspect it's only here because Del Toro likes Ron Pearlman a lot.
7. Idris is kind of a crappy commander.

I don't think the "there's too many humans, just like Bayformers" comparison is really valid. The thing about Bayformers is that the Transformers themselves are characters, and they just DROWN in extra human characters who serve no point or purpose, when the movies are called fucking "Transformers." In Pacific Rim, the robots are just machines, and a movie needs at least some characterization, even if it's only on the level of Top Gun or a Super Robot show. Ron Pearlman is ultimately a meaningless sidequest that could have been cut, but I'm fine with there being two scientists because the pair thing is a running theme in the movie, it fits. Every other character is a pilot, and thus kind of can't be cut.

But again, HOLY SHIT, THAT'S A TANKER, so who cares about any of this.

I hope the cut action scenes are with the Russian and China mechs. Because as repeated ad nauseam here, they needed more screen time.

So I just got back from watching the film a second time. This time in a proper quality cinema.

Opted for 3D since the next showing was sooner.

Much better experience than my first viewing. Though I spent the rest of the film trying to figure out if I got a better picture with the 3D glasses on top my regular glasses or vice versa.

>>37912
I'd argue that there wasn't enough time alloted to character development for the lead pilots. In the original script, getting them to be able to sync up properly was a significant thing. In the final film there wasn't as much time devoted to it.

That said, I'm glad the relationship between the two was developed in such a way that you could interpret it as a platonic friendship. But that's just me.

As for action, to reiterate what I've read as rumors: Supposedly there's about an hour's worth of material cut from the theatrical release. So I hope that there were more action scenes for Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon in all that.

The point wasn't that the other Jaegers were elsewhere. It's that the four ones we saw were the only ones LEFT. Strike Eureka was supposed to have been decommissioned a day before the attack on Sydney.

As for the wall, the point of it was that humanity had been at war for over a decade and the Jaeger program had taxed the world economy so much that people were working for rations.

Whiner. You haven't even mentioned the only legitimate problem with the movie, which is that they underplayed the kaiju's toxicity levels to the point where it wasn't even a thing anymore.

Seriously, the WHOLE point of building the Jaegers was to conserve military might and to stop the big buggers from bleeding everywhere. This was barely even mentioned in the movie.

The rest of your complaints are just opinions, not things that detract from the quality of the film.

> the Wall is fucking ridiculous and just makes literally every leader on the planet look like a complete moron.

Kind of like the Wall that's currently being reinforced between the U.S. and Mexico? Holy shit it's like Del Toro is actually bringing up relevant human reactions to perceived threats or something, how unrealistic.

Sage for bitching at a fellow Rim fan, but your nitpicking is a little elaborate, bub. Say, who's going out for a second viewing? I know I am.
>> No. 37935
My main thought with the Wall was that it was corruption. Politicians saw the number of Jaegers go down, and decided they might as well spend the last years of humanity living the good life, getting kickbacks for this Wall bullshit. Security Theatre!

As for rations, I don't think it was just the Jaeger program, as the Wall does rations along with the Shatterdome. I think that, because of a decade of Kaiju attacks, deaths, and moving people inland, that farming has been seriously disrupted the world over. The Jaeger program might have made this worse, but it wasn't the cause.

Also, anyone else just have to laugh when they said "Gypsy Danger is analog!" as though having your COMPUTER powered by a nuclear reactor will somehow save you from EMPs.

Illegal immigrants are not titanic, building destroying monsters. If it really is intended as a metaphor (which I doubt), it's a shitty one.

See, I just took the Wall as the world leaders resigning and saying "Shit we're doomed. Better go make plans to colonize the moon!"

I just took it to saying that the world leaders/head scientists knew the whole Jaeger program couldn't last forever and opting to go into hiding/running away from the threat rather than facing them head-on. It was a good excuse to why they were seen as humanity's last hope, cause the rest of humanity had all but given up.

I don't think the Kaiju/Illegal Immigrant thing holds any water. Cause what does that mean? We can't build barriers around us, so instead we gotta punch the invaders in the face then drop a nuke in where they come from? That's... some message you're giving if that was your intention.

Thing is, until Newt connected with the brain, they all thought the Kaiju were big dumb animals from another dimension, not engineered biological weapons following a Hive mind. Jesus fuck that was good.

For all the complaints about the wall. Its main reason and purpose was to do exactly as explained in the movie. To cut the Jaeger programme and make it apparent there's no backup. It also works so we can sympathise with the ranger characters and be like "oh this is the end of an era for them. They're the last of their kind!"
If there's any political allegory to be made with the wall, it'd be parodying the government's mentality and logic in taking that decision. "Whoops. Better build a wall." But even then, that's scarce.

Nope. For a bat-analogue, Otachi was horribly overpowered. By the same token it was the only Class IV to really represent any threat. Leatherback was tough but went down easy to plasma. Speaking of IVs, Scunner/Raiju might as well have not even been there, they died so easily, but design wise and personality wise Scunner is probably my hands down favorite. He's just so shifty, gross-looking and violent. I'm consoled by the fact that there are infinite clones of him in the Anteverse, of course.

It's more "building a wall to keep your problems out doesn't fix the problem." We saw it in Mulan too, and this new Attack On Titan anime. I think it's a great metaphor for hiding and avoiding the issue instead of facing reality, which humans do a lot.

Best I can come up with is theaters want maximum profit and according to early tracking (what people want to see) turnout for Pacific Rim wasn't going to be as high as the Sandler film. So theaters ordered more of the one and less of the other or however that works. Comforting to note that the difference between the two is only about 6 million and that is with Grown Ups 2 running x4 as many screen times as Pacific Rim. But in all I think this will end up being similar to Blade Runner regardless in that it will endure.

Sequel idea:

-Strange flying craft goes through a briefly opened dimensional breach followed by a Kaiju.
-Raleigh and Mako are at a Jaeger museum in the same city and board the Exhibit's big attraction, a restored Coyote Tango, the last working Jaeger on the planet
-They battle the Kaiju (highlights include one of Coyote's cannons being knocked loose, prompting the duo to rip it off of the Jaeger's back and use it as a giant club on the monster), beat it, but the mech is damaged beyond repair
-the pilot of the strange craft is revealed to either be an alien or a human from an alternate dimension.
-says his world is under attack by the Anteverse precursors and their Kaijus
-information they extracted from one of the few Kaiju they managed to kill reveals that only one race has managed to best the Precursors, humans and their Jaegers
-his species tried making Jaegers of their own (their advanced tech allows for quicker development/manufacturing) but their inexperience and the lessons the Kaijus learned from the first film makes for some catastrophic losses (it takes nearly half a dozen of their bots to take out even one Kaiju)
-he asks for help from the pilots and scientific personnel of our world
-Earth governments refuse, but Raleigh takes the outsider aside and tells him he's willing to help
-Raleigh, Mako, Herc, Tendou, the scientists and a few of the surviving Mark 2 and 4 Jaeger pilots come with him, aided by classified Jaeger and Kaiju intel from Hannibal on the condition they bring back some Kaiju parts for him to sell.
-the earthlings have to simultaneously teach the denizens of this alternated dimension how to defend themselves as well as figuring out how to close the reinforced Breach of this world, which is floating in orbit in preference to underwater.

Basically Giant Robot Magnificent 7, no, not Samurai7.

He's the main character, but nothing he did throughout the movie made me give a shit about what happened to him. Mako and Raleigh were clearly very close by the end of it, and quite emotionally intimate, but the suggestion is that that's true for pretty much all Jaeger duos. It was left just vague enough that if you want to believe they were just friends, you could.

Apparently the duel between them was supposedly to showcase that the connection between pilots isn't just emotional/intellectual but also somewhat sexual? I can get it for the Russians and Stacker/Tamsin but for siblings and father/son? That must be insanely awkward.
>> No. 38023
>>38022
I wouldn't say so. Usually, when there's a fight like that and it's a build up to sexual tension, you get innuendo like someone is bodily pinned to the ground, or they wind up in a position where their faces are really close and they're both breathing heavily, but that wasn't the case here. Mako could have easily been any rookie; the scene was all about proving she was on the same level as Raleigh. The only thing really sexual about it is that she looked fucking hot in that tank top. If anything, the relationship that came out the most during that scene was father/daughter. While there was some romantic context, it was very subtle, even at the end; there, it was more like close twins who can feel each others' pain than anything else.

When you drift, there's an intense connection that is almost entirely emotional; but, it's not just the way you make each other feel, like endearment, it's super empathy because you can see all of the other's memories. And, on the subject of empathy, it had to seriously fuck with him for Yancy to be plucked while they were connected. Raleigh would literally feel Yancy's fear, pain, and other emotions as he's being pulled away until the moment his gear becomes disconnected.

Speaking of being hot, the entire movie I wondered if she might be the same actress that played Knives Chau in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, mainly due to the short hair and highlights. (Answer: no.)

Oxygen Destroyer is indeed in it, though we don't know to what extent, this movie is an attempt to really capture the original spirit of the movie.

Rumor has it Daisuke Serizawa's role is in the original story is being taken by Sally Hawkins and a lot of the human side of the story is the military trying to push her into using it/disclosing it's construction.

>>38083
You are correct, however they said at the SDCC where it was shown that it is an essential part of Godzilla and that one of the flaws remakes have committed are forgetting it.

They went on to say that by doing so they lose the central themes of the "Nuclear" solution and that the Oxygen Destroyer is an essential part of that theme.

Godzilla 14 is geared to be a contrast movie to Pacific Rim, where people banded together to construct mechanical monster beat down machines, Godzilla is about the colder calculating side of human nature and military risk and endeavor.

From what I've been hearing I can see the film as being very restrained I think because it was the production company fronting the lions share of the budget (75/25 split if accurate) So that might figure into some of its problems in Del Toro not wanting to sink the company with this one film so he tied some things off. Overall its still a fantastic film and maybe Universal will give Legendary another shot, hell this movie is built for making a motion ride, and Del Toro already built most the equipment for such a thing anyway.

Honestly its my favorite movie this year. Didn't pull a dumb twist like Iron Man 3. Didn't completely sacrifice plot for action the last 3rd of the movie like Man of Steel. It just worked well. There were some negatives about the movie but it delivers what it promised.

Well.
I'm just glad it exists. And I'm glad I got to see it at the cinema...

Its not hyperbole when I say I felt like a little kid watching this movie.
I felt so impressed with the visuals and imagery and the WORLD it crafted... And I'm just glad I got to feel like that.
I want to try and go see it again in 3D this week. Just try.
But we're broke... And the place is probably gonna pull the movie out afterwards...

Like I said.
I'm glad it happened.

It probably won't happen again.
There'll probably not be any sequels or spin offs...
And sure, that really saddens me. But I guess its better to love and have lost, I suppose.

That movie isn't going to be more than two weeks in Costa Rica as well. It didn't dragged a lot of people like Ice Age 4 or Avengers (both movies raked the top on our box office) and one of our critics is only talking shit about it. (Then again, "critics" here are in between mediocre and awful).
Yet I see how plenty of people are commenting about how great it was, so I'm not losing any hopes yet.

Saw it, loved it. Wish there were more ladies (not passing the bechdel test? for shame, guillermo) BUT im not going to go on a feminist screed because Mako was handled very well. There was no creepy male gaze involving her or the Cherno-lady at all throughout pretty much the entire movie, which was super refreshing. We got more eye candy of Raleigh than anyone (hes got a very nice body good job mako). She was well developed, had flaws and strengths, a backstory we actually got to see, and was only in peril once and it wasn't the creepy fetishized brand of it. So yeah, needed more ladies, but the one we got was super amazing.

And RALEIGH! Can we talk about how great Raleigh is? Because I couldnt place why I liked him so much until I thought about it a little more and i realized its because hes the all-american-standard-issue protagonist done right? Like he's got all the qualities of your average blockbuster movie hero, but the way they show them is really refreshing. Especially in his treatment of Mako !!! Like I said before, there's never any weird male-gaze-y-ness going on between him and her. I expected him to be really indignant at first when he met Mako because "uuugh i cant believe shes got to be my partner" BUT NO hes like her biggest fan for the entire movie! How great is that? I mean literally from the first time they speak to each other, he's totally star struck by how great she is and how much greater she could be. He's got so much faith in his partner and he's always super respectful to her and thinks she can do anything and never doubts that she's capable of doing this huge thing (again i expected some sort of blow up between them because rrrr youre a rookie and rrrrr youre an arrogant dick BUT NO) and that's pretty much the best thing ive ever seen. So yeah man good job A+ Raleigh Beckett.

(oh and SWORDS MONSTERS WINGS A FUCKING TANKER OH MY GODDDD EVERYONE IS SO COOL THIS MOVIE IS SO COOL weh i wanted more cherno and crimson BUT IT WAS SO FUCKING DOPE !!!!)

What? Mako had basically zero agency whatsoever, she was defined almost entirely by her relationships with Idris Elba and Raleigh (who was, incidentally, a walking drone even if he was a hot one). She is literally a moe moe anime girl made flesh, this film was a disaster as far as women went. BUT I'll chalk that up to an honest mistake because I highly doubt Uncle Del Toro is some kind of sexist pig, I think he just made a bad script all around. Nobody's perfect all the time.

Bad script aside though, Gypsy breaking bad in Hong Kong alone makes the film worth seeing.

Not the same anon you are talking about, but Mako was defined by her desire to avenge her family first, and second to her martial loyalty to her foster father. No? What? She wasn't defined by her relationships with Pentecost (he is kind of her dad, after all) and Raleigh any more than Raleigh was defined by his with her. I thought she was mostly defined by realistic stoicism, a thirst for vengeance, and mad skills. I thought she was gr8, and I AM a bit of a SJW. Mako could have been a guy. It still would have been a good movie and a good story if Raleigh's copilot had been another dude, but they made her a woman. I don't mean to say that del Toro should get brownie points for casting a woman b/c that is like the lowest possible bar, but it seemed to me that her character was very much not dependent on her gender. And that was so refreshing to me.

That we worked our asses to make such awesome machines. We didn't receive them as a gift, we didn't find them hidden underground, or reverse-engineer them from alien tech. From the novel.

"...interviews with former rangers suggest that their cognitive systems are permamently altered by the experience known as the Drift. They report persistant perception that another consciousness is operating in tandem with their own, as well as feelings that each action they take is recreated on a larger scale smewhere else. Some Rangers call this the "Drift hangover," but unlike hangovers, it does not appear to diminish over time.

The number of surviving ex-Rangers is very small, necessitating a degree of skepticism when assessing these findings. The Pan Pacific Defense Corps does not permit external physicians or clinical staff to examine active rangers, further limiting the available data. Nevertheless it appears highly probable that the neural handshake causes persistant and perhaps permament changes in the perceptual systems of the participants.

Also perhaps worthy of further investigation, though likely beyond the purview of this journal, are claims of certain Rangers that they remained connected to their Jaegers even after the neural handshake and Drift were terminated. Numerous anecdotal reports exist of Jaegers shifting with no Ranger in control of them, with attendant claims that these motions replicated the sleeping motions of the Rangers assigned to that particular Jaeger. If substantiated, these claims would characterize the nature of the neural handshake in a profoundly different light. They would also raise the specter of a sort of imprinted simulacrum of consciousness in the Jaegers themselves..."

In the early draft that is available, the brothers were indeed piloting Coyote. The scene where Yancy died is different, they were fighting a turtle-like Kaiju a", and once Raleigh loses his brother he goes berserker and starts pounding the Kaiju into a bloody pulp, to the point the Jaeger is damaged because it's dishing out way more force than what was considered safe.

Also, the flashback happens way later in the film, while Mako and Raleigh were lying in bed. I think I should add that in the previous scene, Mako had just revealed to Stacker than her and Raleigh were fucking, hah!

I mind because the link is done using technology. Like another anon mentioned previously, the Jaegers are our technological avatars, a extention of our will to conquer nature and the unknown throught science and hard labor. It's even a theme in the opening narration, when you jump into a Jager, you don't feel like you have to run from the storm anymore.

Mixing supernatural elements into that, seems lik a bad idea to me, especially like it's done in the draft where it's akin to a psychic ability that Rangers could eventually use to connect with each other without the Pons.

I could see Iron Giant, Megas XLR, Exosquad, Battletech, maybe even Heavy Gear in there...

>This wasn’t the dinosaur part I meant, but while we’re on it, Newt knows dinosaurs did not have two brains.

>This is a myth that comes from a two hundred year old misreading of a cavity in the lower spinal column of stegosaurus, presumed to house a “second brain" for the supposed purpose of expediting reflex response time.

>It’s one of paleontology’s more famously colorful misconceptions. In reality, dinosaurs did not have two brains, and would not have needed two brains.

>But Newt isn’t referencing real dinosaur biology here. He’s referencing the famous myth as shorthand, because its logic does apply to the actual animal in question. For a creature the size of a kaiju (many many times larger than any dinosaur), the nerve conduction velocity from the tail to the head would be something of a problem.

That line bothered me too.

Good to hear an explanation.

Yes, but the atmosphere wasn't right. The thing is, dinosaurs were perfect for that atmosphere. A lot of the biology back then could only exist because there were ridiculous amounts of oxygen in the air.

I don't think the Dinosaurs were some sort of proto-Kaiju, since it would have been noticed the dinos were silicon-based instead of carbon based. Plust it would mean modern day birds would also be silicon-based organisms.

It was a tremendous lapse of judgement for Stacker to not send Striker along with Cherno and Typhoon, and to leave Gypsy at the Shatterdome (why not send Raleigh with another of the candidates?). Otachi would have been easily dealt with before Leatherback arrived, and by then even with the EMP, both Gypsy and Cherno (no way Cherno was less "analog") would have been enough to contain the Kaiju.

Striker was too valuable to risk for the plan. Given that it gave Slattern a run for its money it was a good idea. Stacker couldn't have anticipated the acid, EMP or Otachi's tail. Holding Gipsy back was kind of a bad idea but both those kaiju were made to break the THREE active Jaegers. The only reason Gipsy cleaned house was because the Masters thought it was gone.

Slattern and his groupies probably would have torn through the other two anyways.

I highly disagree with you, sir. Pro-Jaegerism is a blight, those damnable machines suck on precious taxpayer dollars that could be better emplyed to move this world's human population into highly concentrated areas around the pacifc ocean. That would be the safest response to the Kaiju problem.

And why do whe puny earthlings call it a "problem" to begin with? How dare we? Ask yourself, why do I support the PPDC which only impose their jaeger-privilege onto the innocent Kaiju masses? Is trans-dimensional specism the newest form of bigotry?

Even if the wall had worked as hoped and stopped the kaiju onslaught... imagine what it would have meant for the world.

No more commercial trans-pacific travel, so going from USA to Australia or East Asia would have taken days, not hours. Shipping via sea or by air across the pacific would have been forbidden. Entire fishing and whaling industries destroyed. Deep sea research stymied since they can't reach the deepest part of the world's oceans. Only military surveillance drones would have been allowed to enter.

I assume all that was still allowed before the wall, because we saw that fishing boat at the beginning of the film.

I'm honestly not sure how they thought the walls would work, period. Were the outer hulls made of pure titanium or something? And the inner hulls just held up the outer ones?

It did take the one Kaiju an hour to break through in Sydney, so they had *some* sort of plan, it just wasn't strong enough.
>> No. 38249
The only way it would have worked is if they had lined the inner part of the wall with Megaman spikes.

Of course, if the wall had worked it still wouldn't have worked because Otachi could just fly over it. They would have to build a ceiling too.

it seems there's a comic series confirmed.

Which is fucking great news.

There's already rumours as to what artists might be involved.
>> No. 38251
It was implied in the movie that the Wall was just smoke and mirrors, to give the masses a false sense of security while the rich and powerful were relocated to "safe" places inland. Those politicians Pentecost talked to early in the movie were traitors to the human race, at that point that had already forsaken everybody and were just lokking to save their own hides.

It opens in China tomorrow and in Japan on August 9. It's expected to make mad buck in both these markets, but in China it's up against Fast & Furious 6 and White House Down (SARFT, the Chinese movie poobahs, likes to bunch Hollywood blockbusters together so that they eat each others' box office and give local movies space to breathe, a tactic that seems to be working). However, China has a track record of giving marginalised movies a second wind (like After Earth...for some unfathomable reason), and the Chinese seriously love big, loud, city-destroying spectacle, especially if there's giant robots involved. If there's any movie that's practically custom-built for the Chinese market, it's this one.
