Hope they remember that Superman doesn't have a "dark" bone in his body. Worst he ever gets is when you make him mad and then that is just a stony look that lets you know you've crossed his line and you are in it deep.

to be fair, Snyder's movies have been a Frank Miller comic adaptation, Watchmen, and a zombie flick. Kinda hard NOT to be dark in those movies.

Still plenty of color in Dawn of the Dead, I thought. Nolan's producing too, and with as much love he's put into Batman, I'd doubt he'd like Snyder make it too dark. We'll have to see though...I can't think of much light-hearted awe and wonder in Nolan's work either.

Indeed, he's got the "super slouch" going and everything when being Clark. He really got that the persona was more than "just glasses" which is what it gets parsed down to way too often now and is what leaves me a bit concerned with the movie as far as a good portrayal of both halves of the character/s. Best Batman is still Kevin Conroy because of the contrast between his Bruce and Batman persona which largely has fallen flat in just about all the live action films save Keaton who was the closest to getting it IMO. It just bugs me that with the current Superhero stuff in particular DC since Duality is kinda more their bag than Marvel (save Spidey being the one stand out) that they tend to get one or the other somewhat correct but never both. And I just cannot figure out what is missing from the equation.

It's for the best. John William's Superman score for the Richard Donner films were great, but Man of Steel needs to have a distinct theme of its own. If there's one lesson WB has learned from Superman Returns, it's that they need to stop cribbing from the Donner films.
>> No. 34862

Though it should learn from them. From what I've read about Superman being "Dark" (this was reportedly said by Snyder at the Comic Con panel) and some enthusiasm I've read in some writings of Superman just beating the crap out of people and not being the aforementioned "boy scout"(again reportedly shown footage at the panel)..it concerns me. And if they go down this road and still attempt a JL film with A Batman it wont work because they'd be too similar if Supes isn't uncompromising pillar of integrity that he needs to be in order for the other heroes to function. As for Zimmer would it be on the right track to say for a Superman score to look 180 degrees of what he did for Batman?

hmm? I was just saying Batman is a DARK knight, and Superman should therefore be a model superhero, not a dark character. Alex Ross' interpretation is by far my favorite (not counting DCAU).

I also doubt Cavill will be able to top Christopher Reeves' performance as the all star Superman and the mild mannered Clark Kent.

BTW WTF is up with Hollywood's basketball texture costume fetish???
>> No. 35216
So, I saw The Cold Light of Day last week, starring Henry Cavill. I KNEW this guy had SOMETHING to do with Superman, but couldn't be bothered to remember what and only just connected that he's starring in Man of Steel.

Let me just say that he wasn't irredeemably bad in The Cold Light of Day, but he wasn't very good in eat either. The whole movie was pretty bland overall, and he didn't make a very good leading man in it. It probably would have been better if they had Bruce Willis pick up some of the slack for the leading roll and made it about a CIA father getting his family back with the help of his douchebag (he seriously was) Business Consultant son instead of just killing him off in the first 20 minutes[/i]. That would have been more interesting.

The movie did have a few things I liked: The protagonist doesn't just go on a killing spree, and thus has a a body count of one (Which is mainly an accident), they actually took the high route of not torturing a guy, and they avoided having a mandatory romance story (albeit,l in a kind of awkward way in that the female "lead" [spoiler]was his sister
).

So yeah, if you want to get excited over Man of Steel and Henry Cavill, skip Cold Light of Day. If you want to ground your expectations more, then go see it, I suppose.

You mean the plot where Superman realizes he's fucking Superman and also Jesus? Sorry, but hell no. That's the most pretentious plot to give for a Superman film and I'm seriously worried about Man of Steel doing another Superman Returns.

A much better Superman film would be big and apocalyptic, with Brainiac coming to tear all hell loose and turn Earth into a antiseptic bottled planet for all eternty. World armies and futuristic technology incapable of halting Brainiac's Galactus-esque arrival and assault, it would be up to Clark to realize he's morally stronger and more courageous than he gives himself credit for, and despite all the cynicism and sadism of the modern world, one man can not only make a difference, but more importantly, can show humanity that they have potential and value as life.

Superman not as Jesus but the Human Ideal, that compassionate bravery and intelligence which all Men must strive for. It would contrast perfectly with Brainiac as an utterly unknowable, uncaring and unstoppable alien organism, much like the Engineers from Prometheus.

A "Jesus" story would imply Superman would be a giant papa bear out to save the world from nasty stuff, and while all Superman stories have this inherently, a better Superman story would be about giving people enough to courage to fight their own battles themselves. It's the whole Superman paradigm of him "doing too much" for human civilization.

It's funny, my first thought when I saw that scene was that Superman fanboys would be raising a stink about it. Personally, I think it's an appropriate direction for the character. It's easy to say, "Always put others before yourself" when you know the odds of your child being in any real danger are slim, but when you have a child for whom the very act of helping people puts him at at risk, the message gets much harder to deliver.

Okay, for the record I'm totally on the side of the movie because "maybe" fits tonally for the film.

But it IS COMPLETELY AT ODDS with every other depiction of the character.

See, Superman is not a character to usually throw his powers around frivolously as he grapples with morality and possibly destabilizing entire political systems and affecting millions so if Johnathan Kent is alive in the specific version Superman often talks to him and even if he doesn't have all the answers he's the DEFINITION of reassuring.

>>36471
Picture sums up what I fear films might forget again and its that Clark is what makes Superman who HE is. So far it seems okay him looking for answers and him willingly turning himself over to authorities in order to dissuade their fears. But

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2013/feb/01/man-steel-lois-lane-ipad

Then we seem to be focusing to much on Superman the Alien and acting like its some kinda First Contact as the article has it, don't know with how Hollywood has dealt with such things in recent films if that will work with a Superman movie, especially if Nolan has too much control and it ends as a goofy wreck like the last one did. Trying to insert Superman into the "Real World" that alone I find a laughable concept since the whole Nolan Batman thing developed into something far more comical than if they had put Batman in a comic universe from the start.

Little too much riding on this in my opinion. Its fine if they had done the Marvel route and had tied these movies together over the course of years giving people some anticipation for a JL film. But Batman is finished and being primed for another Reboot, Green Lantern was a bust so hard it seemed to make them doubt that brand entirely,Wonder Woman is a no show after that stinker of a pilot and Flash is absent entirely. Don't know how they expect to enthuse people about one movie withing another when probably most the general population think Justice League they are actually thinking about the Superfriends.

Yea the others seem to get bogged down on the whole "alien" bit. Yes he's from another planet but the whole fact he was raised by a couple from Kansas and less a search for a place in our world than just his place in THE world. I just worry about too much of himself internalizing that he's "the alien" that was Lex's Hangup. I don't want Kal I want Clark if you get my meaning.

Also this real world fixation shoots the whole Justice League movie idea all to hell since an island of Amazons connected ancient pantheons is kinda hard to fit into a "real world" especially when the one in question has an origin that could be clay based.

Beginning to understand what the hesitation people are going though is. The dudes in charge seem to have very littler understanding of emotion and drive. That was put in great perspective with the end of Dark Knight and the Gordon Speech and the Opening of Rises which contradict each other massively if only because Nolan only saw Batman as a man regardless of motivations and character. The man quit because he couldn't take it punishment and left the city to become a police state, but a Batman would have kept fighting regardless of his person. Its my main concern as to what might happen with Man of Steel is that we'll see less of Superman and more just a Alien in a Cape.

>Screenwriter, David S. Goyer reveals to Entertainment Weekly that the children of Krypton (Superman's home planet) are engineered. "People were bred to be warriors or scientists or what-have-you, and there's a whole element in the movie about nature versus nurture," Goyer says. Kal-El is unique because he's a natural conception, free from genetic manipulation to choose his own course in life - which also makes his existence highly illegal.

>Civilization Dead
>existence highly illegal.

And that would matter how?

>Terrance Stamp portrayed Zod as an icy warlord in "Superman II", but Michael Shannon sees him as more of a die-hard supremacist. "He actually has some affection for anybody who's a Kryptonian, including Superman," Shannon says. "He doesn't really have any malignant feelings toward him; he just wants him to be patriotic."

Would rather ditch that first part and have him be just a Patriot that wants to bring glory to his people again and therefore give some indication that Supes would sympathize. But making him Space Hitler..yea kinda puts Supes on his opposition from page one. Maybe that will be a later reveal.

But this is so set on running away from it that I think they'll miss some of the better points. I mean so far almost every film promo with Superman looks dark and gloomy shot with a filter and that just feels icky. I mean him talking to Lois while in Lockup feels like something from Dark Knight and it shouldn't.

Without the filter the suit looks great as does Cavill but with it the suit looks dark and dirty and the shadows it makes makes him look off.

Did you hear the theme from the trailer? Because that was pretty damn uplifting. Zimmer himself said Superman is an uplifting character meant to inspire hope, and he wanted to reflect that. What we heard there is just a small sample taken out of context, and from what we've heard of the early Krypton scenes, those will be grim and science fictiony as hell.

ah okay so that is how they handled the dying planet but also removing kryptonite just making the sun not go boom and therefore no radiated particulate crashing to earth. Also funny is that that is the way the earth goes out in some Science Fiction Doctor Who being the most recent to bring up Red Giant engulfing the planet.

They've been consistently saying that the "realism" is in how the world is reacting to Superman's appearance, and giving a consistency to all of his powers and how they work. Realism doesn't really seem like the right word for it, so much as plausibility.

Honestly I originally thought this was going to be awful, from the moment they announced it, but goddamn now I'm hyped.

My concern on the plausibility of Superman is going to cause a lot of people to tune out what seems to be a good chunk of the movie. Reading the excepts from the list they are dead set on explaining the reasons why we should "believe a man can fly" and I wonder if that is really necessary to immerse people or if it might do the opposite. I mean you spend the first part of your magic show explaining away every one of your tricks can one still enjoy said tricks to the same extent as when they were ignorant?

And yet each of those movies, except maybe Thor, went into copious detail as to why those things could happen. Hell, the Raimi movies completely removed the webshooters and just made it one of his natural powers because they felt Peter Parker building them wouldn't be believable. Even The Amazing Spider-Man took time to show Peter stealing and refining the web formula and hobbling the shooters together out of old bits and bobs in his basement.
>> No. 37410

Marvel's own Hulk movie didn't give a fuck about giving any elaborate, plausible explanation for the character. And Lee's film overthinking the ins and outs of what makes such an impossible creature work is precisely one of the reasons why it was disliked.

Also, as you already mentioned, in the Sam Raimi movies it was deceided that Peter making his own shooters wasn't beliveable, and yet people didn't find it unbeliveable in Amazing Spider-Man.

Look, I am all for internal consistency and helping the audience to suspend desbelief. That's good. But tryign so hard to make something like Superman to be realistic is absurd. People didn't believe that a man could fly in Donner's Superman film because some over-elaborated explanation. They did believe it because the movie honestly, unafraid, unironically said "this guy? he can totally fly"

In regards to consistency, I explained to my parents (who don't really read comics, or at least, haven't in many years) that every interpretation is different, and every director, artist, author, etc. has their own interpretation, they're usually working with 50+ years of varying explanations for the same thing, things won't always match up, just go with it.

That isn't to say I haven't been upset with continuity issues before. Even series with one writer and continuity can just massively retcon shit, and it's hard not to nitpick the glaring ones.

>"It never really felt like a comic-book movie to me," Shannon told MTV News. "Because of the approach, it was so serious. And I don't mean that to make it sound like it's not [fun]; I mean, at the end of the day, it's meant to be an entertaining movie and I think it is. But from the beginning where they're on Krypton, there's some real serious issues being discussed, and real dire circumstances. And just the scope of it kind of took me by surprise — I think it's unusual."

Crud, why does it feel like this is going to be Green Lantern again, more in that were going to have multiple films stitched together instead of feeling like one cohesive piece. Really as much as they keep talking about Krypton politics and crap I feel that could have been better served as part of the flashback at the fortress than as the first part of the film. But I guess if you are going to go to the trouble of casting Crowe as Jor-El you gotta use him as much as possible.

It is really just more the films directions are different from what critics seemed to think they were getting both that being something like Donner Superman and as soon as he puts on the tights that he becomes superman with no further development.

The whole movie is very much an origin story from what I've pieced together that is deeper than I think people expected. Basically Superman as we know him isn't in this movie Superman as a defined persona won't appear till the second movie. This movie is Clark coming to terms with his powers and what he feels he should do and how he should act. He's building the Persona in this movie its not something that he's already thought out. Its mainly Clark that is fighting in this movie which I find a very interesting.

Least that is how I see him judging by the trailers and the interviews they've had about the story.

Just got back from the premiere over here.

I have to say, not having kept a close eye on this movie, it was much better than I could have hoped for. I totally could have seen the story done as a one-shot graphic novel. As a retelling of Superman's origin, it reminded me a bit of Birthright in some aspects, and Secret Identity in others, though those are just the ones off the top of my head. I was engaged all through out and I never once felt like any scene dragged on for too long or even noticed that it was nearly 3 hours long.

The fight scenes were really well done. Some of the best, if not the best super battles I've seen in a comic book movie.

It wasn't until halfway through the movie that I realized the colonel was supposed to be a nod to the Guardian.

Went to one of the early premiere showings tonight. It was great, really, really great. But it desperately could use some trimming down, especially of the Costner scenes and a couple of the fights. They're goddamn fantastic and put DBZ to shame in their sense of speed and sheer ridiculousness but there's not much room to breathe with all of them.

Also the product placement leads to some really awkward, clunky moments, and unintentionally hilarious scenes like Superman getting his ass beat in an IHOP lobby.

All in all though, I'd say it's about a 7/10. A shorter cut could easily be an 8 or a 9 for me, but I won't say I'm not happy with what I got.

Ten bucks says the sequel involves Luthor using the Metropolis reconstruction for political gain, and Brainiac manifesting through those neat little Kryptonian nanites. The Fortress of Solitude even has a symbol eerily similar to his DCAU incarnation's on one of the walls.

The movie felt too dark and clumsy to me. There was unnecessary character death, double origin stories, and jumpy storyline flashbacks, with almost no character development. Zod and Ursa were the only things worth watching as far as I was concerned, and even then only for the final acts of the film. It was a lot of build up for a first movie, with double origin story plots, and a huge climactic battle with Clark ultimately killing Zod at the end, which had very little emotional impact due to the lack of development for Clark and the following scenes all being jokes and lighthearted, showing that it didn't even emotionally impact the character himself very much.

It's not the Superman movie I was hoping to see. Especially not the start to a Justice League franchise that is somehow supposed to be rivaling the Avengers. 3/10

I'd disagree about the dramatic scenes/flashbacks and the length of the movie.

I'm usually pretty conscious about time and pacing in long movies and when scenes seem to go on too slow, but I felt that the way they were paced here were pretty good. Just enough time to get the point across, not too long so that they slow things down too much.

With this film, I found myself not really having noticed how long everything was, to an even greater extent that I did with The Hobbit.

>>37633
I can understand where Mark Waid is coming from, but I feel that he's not giving the movie enough room for alternate interpretation of the character.

It's like when they made Optimus Prime a rookie in Transformers Animated, he wasn't the Prime we all knew, but the story was supposed to have been set at the beginning of his career and what not. I take that same view with this interpretation of Superman. It was after all an origin story, there's a lot of room for future development and for the character to grow. I mean he only finally gets called Superman like 2/3rds into the movie.

Lastly, I'd just like to point out how much ass Faora kicked in the film. Effective lieutenant is effective.

Just got back from watching the movie. Actually it got really good reviews from critics i read (generally pretentious guys who always hate fantasy/superheroe movies but really loved this one) and i wasn't disappoint. Well, connected, great moments, lots of action, Henry Cavill was awesome, Superman was awesome, Kal-Clark was awesome, General Zod was a great antagonist, Faora too. I see the points of Waid but i still think this was a great movie.

So...what was the new superpower? i guess i must have blink it because i didn't saw it

I really, really loved watching her wreck shit. Her zooming around and slapping the shit out of things in super speed gave me some high hopes for how a Flash movie could work.

I think that was the Kryptonian's batshit insane psychic interrogation technique they used on Clark and Lois.

So Man of Steel turned out to be Batman Begins with Superman:

>Krypton's Fall was basically was R'as said would happened when the League of Shadows got to work, destroying a society at the peak of its harmful decadence
>father figure dying in front of hero, their last exchange fucking said hero up royally in the head
>Hero becomes a bearded hobo drifter that roams the earth, angry, confused and listless
>gets a costume and decides to play superhero
>has an older mentor that doesn't really get into the action but gives him corny, sage advice (Jor-El is sort of Clark's Alfred)
>hero is pursued by the authorities
>authorities eventually accept hero
>villain has a warped and hamfisted "noble" nature but is mostly a cipher to be what the scene needs in an attempt to make him memorable
>villain shows up with an army of thugs looking to destroy society to make way for one that appeals to their stupid philosophy
>thugs are supposedly hero's equal but are dispatched more or less easily so that hero vs. villain can happen
>city explodes as the two clash
>hero ends up killing villain
>female lead finds out heroes secret identity at end of film

At least the Action was better.

That was always a given with Nolan on board and Warner Brothers thinking making everything Batman would work. While I like the basics of this Superman the overall movie really needed some work. Anyone try it in 3D. According to Brad and Friends the conversion was worthless.

A... few plotholes kinda bug me.

why did they bring Lois Lane on board the ship? No really. She had no point being there from the bad-guys perspective.

The pace of the film was likewise all over the place, and the way they kept hammering in how important he'll grow into was kinda annoying. Like come on, we get this already!

Still. The final climax was damn impressive. And the way the epilogue ended actually seemed like it'd be more in spirit to Superman? I'm hoping that the sequel will be more impressive.

Before I begin, I want to say that I'm sick of the discussions on Zack Snyder looping back into the fucking penis discussion from Watchmen. It's been a couple of years now, and it wasn't nudity in a sexual context. Grow up, guys.

Anyways. Movie dragged a little at beginning and end. Don't like when a movie has false ends. Otherwise fantastic. Wayne Enterprises logo shoulda held a little longer, I missed it. Feminists will like this film. Clark's two mothers are pretty resilient, it's arguably Lois' movie, and Faeora is arguably tougher than Zod is. I like how Faeora and Zod don't seem to have anything going on between them. They're just partners, and that's it.

Friends were discussing potential actors for Lex, and they both thought either Kevin Spacey or Michael Rosenbaum should come back. Although I expect a "no, cause I'm evil" out of Rosenbaum if they pick him.
Kinda want them to pull a Marvel and introduce Bruce or Robin!Batman at the end of the second film. Or Diana. Diana needs a good live-action film, dammit. Get Dini to help on it, or something.

Besides the legitimate complains about pacing and such, I am seeing a LOT of bitching all over the Internet about the level of collateral damage and Supes killing Zod. Shit, Mark Waid disliked the movie for those reasons.

I am sorry, but that's a load of poppycock. I liked that ther was such level of destruction and visible loss of life, because it gave me the impression that shit had hit the proverbial fan. Zod wasn't messing around, he truly meant every word when he said that he was going to kill everybody on earth, and it added a tremendous sense of urgency to the battles, Superman was truly saving us from a extinction-level threat.

To make a comparision, as much as I loved Avengers, the threat that the Chitauri invasion represented was laughable. We saw a bunch of ugly aliens shooting wildly and hitting nothing, and a Leviathan crashing a building, and that's it. Never I felt like the world was in real danger, since the threat was something out of an 80s action cartoon.

And for the spoiler I too liked the scene, because it obviously had a huge emotional impact on Superman, and it's most likely the moment where this new version decided to never take a life again. Compare that to Superman in Superman II, kicking a depowered Zod (remember, Zod in MoS was still a very active threat) into a botomless pit, all while sporting a snarky smile in his face.

My thought when it started was that they intended to use her as leverage against Clark if he refused to cooperate. But then that psychic interrogation happened, and that sort of killed that line of thought. They did apparently steal facts about him from her mind, but since they did it to him, too, that also seems unnecessary.

Which is going to require all kinds of super science and Lex being the originator of members of the Superman Revenge Squad.

No doubt Lex uses the destruction of more than a quarter of Metropolis to his advantage, securing his position as "the most powerful man in Metropolis" more firmly than before. With a new world opened up to him in the wake of an alien attack.

I can't remember... The world engine only collapsed and exploded right? Cause if it didn't that's prime scavenge and make cyborgs and super mutants material right there.

A fearful section of the governments of the world will willingly give Lex what he needs to solve the "Superman Problem".

Hell, the goverment most likely will hire him to do scientific research on Superman, liike in the Nu-52.

Also, since Supes still had the Codex on his cells (a very obvious plot thread is there's been one), who knows, perhaps Lex will end up creating a Bizarro or a Superboy in the sequel.

Zod's ship was sucked into the Phantom Zone, but yeah, there has to be something worth scavenging from the remains of both the World Engine and the colony ship carrying the Genesis chamber.

Also, since they have already said that they are going to give this Lex the same treatment as Lois, I wonder if that means that he is going to find out Superman's identity.

Another thing, I can't be the only person pissed off that Prof. Hamilton died in the movie.

I quite liked Man of Steel... but I worry that the scale of the action will be hard to match in sequels, and may have been wildly too apocalyptic for Superman's First Adventure.

Like, this was a Doomsday or even Crossover Event level fight... and I think that may have been too much for future movies to ramp up on. Like, what are they going to do by the third Superman movie, or a hypothetical Justice League movie- sink Britain? Drop the Moon on Russia? Turn the entire continent of Africa into a giant robot for Superman to fight?

>>37680
Plenty of room to run with that premise after this one. With so much of Metropolis wrecked, they can easily pull a "Lex Luthor, Real Estate Mogul" angle, and the Kryptonian invasion left enough detritus for his to easily make a superpowered goon squad able to go toe to toe with Supes.

Plus, Zod's invasion gives plenty of understandable grounding for his xenophobia.

>I can't be the only person pissed off that Prof. Hamilton died in the movie

He didn't die... he got sucked into the Phantom Zone, foreshadowing his return as Ruin in the fourth movie, as the villain...

I think DC should play it safe, and slowly integrate Batman maybe into the next one, and then bring in Wonder Woman, see how a film with all three of them works instead of just going Avengers and dumping everyone in all at the same time.

I mean, with Marvel, you did have everyone interacting with Nick Fury, Thor indirectly interacting with Hawkeye, and Hawkeye interacting offscreen with Black Canary as part of their backstory, but The Avengers was the first time most of them had met. With DC being less successful movie-wise, I'd like to see them do a team-up or trio thing pulled off, first.

I like Cavill and his thoughts on Justice League that we should have a build up for his fellows. Thinking of such could Two Heroes Co-Star in films to shorten build up? Seeing Atlantis as a stones throw from Themyscira I could see them as a reluctant duo stopping some local turned global threat and at the end hearing the Speech Supes probably gives in the second movie about "I'm a protector of the world." They decide to contact him seeing there is a greater good to be done for the world. Next Flash and Cyborg and then Batman and GL. If anything the combinations would be interesting depending on whom is used. Ohh Batman and GL hunting Manhunters.
