So Uchouten Kazuko just ended. Though it ended pretty flat and left several things hanging, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to the coming season now. Kill la Kill, Space Dandy, Kyousogiga.... this season might be one for the ages.

What?
I love how the biggest twist that has happened in this manga has nothing to do with politics or Rukh and that stuff.

Wow, shonen series like Magi don't usually go back on their shipteases. Well, unless this is kicking off a short arc where Morgianna gets the guts to confess her feelings.
Good news for Hakuryuu, though.

I picked up Kyoukai no Kanata, because I read the synopsis and thought it sounded interesting. Turns out it is. What I didn't know is that it is a KyoAni show. KyoAni doing action? This entire season might just have too much animation porn for me to handle. I will get forever spoiled.
Also, I need the OST for this show, like, yesterday.

Guys, I can't recommend Choukakou enough. It's like Mulan, but even better. With higher stakes, political intrigue, strategy, personal growth and philosophy. Also, very handsome men. Just bear with the silly amount of impossible to remember Chinese names being thrown around in the first few chapters and you won't regret it.

I'm watched Kill la Kill before watching Kyoukai no Kanata and it made me realize how beautiful KyoAni animation is and how comfy it makes me feel (not that Kill la Kill's animation is bad, just stylized which I also really like but yeah).

Finally got around to watching all of Deadman Wonderland.

That was one of the most, if not the most, unfulfilling endings I have ever seen. It wasn't the nearly retarded-girl-lovefest I thought it would be after reading >>84432, but so much potential just went *splat*. I assume the manga goes onward, but, fuck, now I have no interest in looking at the scans.

True. Neither does being cold, necessarily. The virus is always present in the human body, and it affects you when there's vulnerable tissue in your sinuses and throat and your immune system is down. The dub's existence is bit of a unique case: a third of the show was dubbed when Central Park Media originally owned the license (back when VHS was still a thing!), then the rest of the show got dubbed years later (with the original cast intact!) when CPM finally worked out some wonky rights issues.

As far as quality goes…well, it's okay. Not as bad as your typical late-'90s/early-2000s dubs, but not altogether great. CPM was never known for quality dubs back then, anyway (that ‘award’ went to ADV).

Really interesting read. Explains a lot of things that are happening in the industry. Predictably, /a/ is losing their shit over this single paragraph, though:
>What is new information, at least to me, is the revelation that the workforce in anime production is increasingly skewed towards women, a major shift in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Hiro points out that in the past 3 years, out of the 15 contract hires Madhouse brought on to help with animation work, only one was male.
>> No. 85566

Miyazaki said much the same thing a while back; whenever they make a job posting, only women apply.

IIRC that was poorly translated and he was saying that it was the death of the anime industry as we know it. Which isn't an inaccurate thing to say, moving from a male-dominated space to a female-dominated space is going to cause some changes, even if the audience stays the same.

Some pretty neat martial arts stuff. Not really realistic, but the mangaka at least tried to give an explanation to basic techniques and applied them in actually somewhat down-to-earth manner. Procrastination is often caused by a person being too afraid of failure to go on. It's entirely possible that Berserk has become SO important to him that he's increasingly terrified of making a misstep, and THAT'S why his output is so slow.

Not giving a shit in the proper amounts is actually a really important skill for a professional artist to have.

I recently found the first volume at the library (hardcover, it's really nice), because apparently VS actually got licensed at some point, and read a bit of that. MAN you forget after years and years of serialization how some of that early stuff really comes around, like how the whole "a true warrior needs no swords" thing was something Thors said that nobody understood (they thought he meant hand to hand combat).

And there's this little gem.

Teppu's actual fights didn't engage me too much on a pure-action level, cause I lack the knowledge needed to appreciate all the technical MMA details going on. I just enjoyed them via what they meant for/about all the people who're present.

That changed over time. This page was the first moment that got a visceral gut "OOOOOOHH" the moment I saw it. Hasn't been the last, either. The artist still covers all the technical details but has REALLY started to nail pacing and use all these different kinds of "camera shots" to enhance various moments.

It really says something that the clearest parallel I can see for her personality is Alucard from Hellsing. She WANTS A CHALLENGE. She doesn't want people to tell her she's cool or to make character X proud or even to Be The Strongest. She's BEEN the strongest and HATES it, it's boring and kinda lonely. Nothing disappoints her like an easy win, and god damn does that resonate with me.

Freezing has an interesting universe. It's basically Pacific Rim meets Bubblegum Crisis. Too bad the story they focus on is one of high school drama with plenty of panty shots and anime cliche. What's funny is that, at least on Hulu, the dub is a-okay with showing naked breasts while the sub puts these out-of-place swaths of light over them and the panty shots! So what's the point?

>What's funny is that, at least on Hulu, the dub is a-okay with showing naked breasts while the sub puts these out-of-place swaths of light over them and the panty shots! So what's the point?

That's just because the dub, as with most foreign releases, uses the DVD/BD version, whereas the sub release on hulu is a simulcast of the broadcast version that's been around longer. The sub version that's on FUNimation's website is probably the uncensored version.

Anyway, with a lot of the more adult-oriented anime, their censorship is deliberately half-ass--and probably more frequent than the law or network standards requires--for the sake of encouraging people to get the BDs. The television broadcast is pretty much considered an advertisement for the DVD version and the source material it's based on.

I posted a few months ago about how I hated the idea of this series and acted like a general ass about it. Rewatching it now I completely fucking misjudged this show. While it's not necessarily the Lupin focused show I'd like I have to give it props for making me actually interested in Fujiko, who's not usually the deepest or most well handled character, but goddamn they pulled it off here. If anything it's worth watching for that animation alone. So many shots feel like they could've been pulled straight out of the original manga and I love it for that.

Honestly, I'd say it's worse than Bleach. At least with Bleach the characters are visually distinct and the action, if repetitive and dull, is at least fairly mobile on the page.

Claymore is just a swarm of visually indistinct characters doing the same things over and over again in terminally dull, static pages.

It's just so bad. Which is unfortunate because on paper Claymore sounds like my dream series. But the execution is so unbelievably terrible.

Ubel Blatt...

Christ.

Ubel Blatt is in the same category for me as uh, Air Gear and Tenjo Tenge. There are some REALLY GOOD aspects and also some overall fucked-up shit when it comes to 'fanservice'.

In this case the overall good thing turns out to be the premise/general story setup. I'm not gonna spoil, it takes like 1 or two volumes to really reveal itself. I'm kind of reminded of what Code Geass pulled in its better moments with Hero is Villian is Hero is Villian, but BETTER- more coherent and believable and justified. And also just original/refreshing in some ways, different kind of main character.

Chapter to chapter, story is... okay. Has some really good moments and some eh moments and aforementioned creepy fanservice shit on occasion. Creepy like Berserk's rape horse. I mean I'm not saying it literally has- FUCK. FUCK, NO, IT LITERALLY DOES HAVE THAT. OKAY THERE YOU GO.

Also, it came off this year+ hiatus, and the next 20 ensuing chapters have been almost 100% "eh" material.

>> No. 87351

I disagree completely. The FMA movie wrapped up pretty much everything that the series had left open and tied it in a nice little package.

The remaining homunculi died, the new villain was defeated, the course of our world's timeline was put back into order, Mustang regained his vigor and possibly became Fuhrer, and the Elric brothers were reunited. Just like in the end of the manga, having regained their bodies, they go out traveling the world together on new adventures.

The only appreciable difference is that Ed didn't marry Winry, and it wouldn't surprise me in the LEAST if that were the biggest reason people were unhappy with it. Also, it wasn't an unambiguously happy ending for the heroes. Considering how grim and dark the first FMA was compared to manga/Brotherhood, it wouldn't have made sense like that, anyway.

One could probably make a good portion of a personality test based on which version you prefer more. The grimdark, realistic, serious, gritty FMA where things suck most of the time and doesn't always come up roses; or the happy, exaggerated, funny, often chibi-fied FMA where things suck a little bit but it all works out in the end.

I don't agree. Obviously, there's more to it than that, but everything else stems from the thematic differences. Bones took FMA's skeleton and used it to produce something completely opposite to the series it was purportedly adapting. All changes made make sense in the context of such a definitive change.
