So, while plus4chan was down I decided to watch all of Soul Eater. And then read the manga. And then read Soul Eater Not! I have to say, of all my backlog that I have done this winter Soul Eater is the only one that got me hooked enough to go past "just the anime" thing that has happened before it. Soul Eater also broke my "hard copies only" rule of reading manga. Now begins the slippery slope of reading manga online that I have been resisting for years.

Any way, this is the Soul Eater thread, lets talk Soul Eater.
1. Did Crona eat Medusa's soul? If not, why would Medusa allow herself be killed by Crona?
2. Was the Book of Eibon also absorbed by Crona?
3. Have we seen male witches (warlocks??), is Free a warlock?
4. Is it wrong that I feel that Maka/Crona is slightly better endgame regardless of sex than Maka/Soul?

It's possible Ragnarok/Crona ate it to get stronger like any other weapon would (especially since this chapter shows Crona using what looks a lot like a vector-arrow), but I'm not sure what that has to do with it.
Assuming she really is dead, she did it to get Crona to become a Kishin.
Re-read chapter 96 (preferably the Vortex version). Crona gives a whole rant about how killing (PRONOUN USED FOR CONVENIENCE) his own mother made him so terrible he has no place in this world. So he has to become a Kishin, take Asura's power, and make the world the kind of place he belongs in.
Medusa knew Crona would react to her "apology" by killing her and surely had a good idea where it would go from there, so this has basically all been to complete her experiment.

I hadn't thought of that actually. I think Noah fused with the book right before Crona ate them both, but Noah was normal looking when he came out instead of part of a giant ant, so I guess either is possible.

There are some non-witch magic users (Gopher, Giriko and the rest of his village of "enchanters" that made golems). If they're born with their powers like witches are or just learn to use them hasn't been specified, but either way they don't seem to have the "sway of magic" thing witches do.

As far as I can tell, Free can use magic because he has the head witch Mabaa's eye (which I think also makes his soul partially like a witch's).

As for why he's immortal, I still can't tell whether it's because he's a werewolf, because he has the eye, or for some other reason.

There are, however, differences before that. Most are pretty minor, but a few are notable because they affect some things later in the manga:

1. In the anime, the Meister/Weapon pairs specifically hunt humans that have eaten good souls--which are visibly different from evil souls--and witches, which are the only souls that can be safely consumed. In the manga, they hunt down anyone that Death judges to be sufficiently evil to put on his list, which also indicates which souls will not drive you crazy for consuming.
2. In the manga, Ragnarok was turned small by having the souls he ate removed instead of being purified by Maka.
3. In the manga, Maka did not first use Majin Hunter against Mosquito, but in a fight a short time after the anime diverges. There is also no mention of her mother using the technique.

The first one especially would have caused significant problems if the anime went far enough, as Death's list comes up in a very significant capacity.

After checking out mangaburn's scan, I tremendously recommend anyone who read that first read the other translation.

It's not just a matter of awkward dialogue and typos, like usual (even when it's repeating the same monologue that began every fucking episode of the anime), the mangaburn version gets basically everything Asura was saying entirely backward.

Oh, and we're supposedly really coming up on the end of the series: I've heard the author's comment on chapter 108 is that it's the first chapter of the last volume, hence pic related.

Since this is a monthly manga, volumes are basically only four or five chapters--unless some of them are shorter than usual--and the last chapters is usually extra-big. I'd say the last chapter is most likely coming out in June, but May or July are both possibilities.

In the manga Eibon turned out to be hiding on the island Brew was hidden on, pretending to be one of the holograms (chapter 87). Presumably he's still there now.
In hindsight I'm kind of confused at the point of this revelation, considering all he did was have a short conversation with Kid that didn't tell us much of anything.

As for the rest:
Brew and the Book of Eibon are almost definitely there. Crona needed them to form the seal and probably needs them to maintain it. Even if he didn't, Crona has no apparent means of or reason to get rid of them.

While Index and the unnamed Great Old One are probably still in the Book of Eibon, it might not matter that they're on the moon: G.O.O. chooses to stay inside the book. Index probably can't leave (because he's part of the book), apparently can't communicate with someone outside the book, and he doesn't have any Noahs left to do his dirty work. Crona probably can't go into the book without leaving Asura's seal unattended, if at all. And we saw you can go into the book from a remote location; the opposite might be possible thus Crona sure as hell isn't going to let Asura into the thing.


Ragnarok in general is strange because, since Crona's first appearance after the Book of Eibon arc, Ragnarok became far less prominent as an individual character--to the point that he effectively vanished from the series some time ago.

Right after Crona fused with the clown, Ragnarok was still being his usual, pushy self. The only difference is that Ragnarok stopped emerging from Crona except as a head (though he was able to control that third arm long enough to pull up Crona's robe).

Next time we saw them, fighting the Russian Death Scythe, Ragnarok talked (briefly). It was from then on he was nothing but sounds and gibberish. They apparently killed Medusa right after getting back from there, so it couldn't have been something she did afterward.

After Asura absorbed Crona, we never saw Ragnarok at all, only Crona's mind. That might have destroyed their shared body, killing Ragnarok but not Crona for some reason.

And about those people in the mad blood spheres (the Russian Deathscythe, his partner, and a town in Ukraine): this might be confusion from poor translation, but is it possibly reversible or are they all dead? Were Maka and Soul just trying to break that sphere open to free that soul from some horrible afterlife?

No, just a one-off joke. The main three characters of Not! don't even go on missions, because they and the majority of the academy's students are in the NOT class (which is mandatory for weapons). Only the best students (which is all of the ones we know of in the main series) are allowed in the EAT class, who actually fight for Death.

On a different note, the volume version of chapter 112 had a scene that was cut from the magazine version: Asura tried to keep Soul and Maka from leaving, but all he managed to do was remove their black blood, hence Maka's outfitted changing color. Your guess is as good as mine as to why something that important was removed, but then put back in.

So ep4 happened. I'm liking the changes and additions so far.

I'll give NOT! this: The apparent main character, Tsugumi, at least had a straight introduction into the DWMA. No legendary fighter, or even the characters from Soul Eater, had a fight in front of her and wound up having to use her in battle; she wasn't some weapon/meister fan from an early age and *finally* had her chance to become one or the other and enroll; and there was no hence-unknown family secret about being weapons.

It was just "Whoops I guess I'm a weapon!" and off we go. Refreshing in its brevity.

But otherwise it's moe blob shit. Not even two episodes under the belt before we do a cafe. The constant blushed cheeks and raw knees/elbows are weird, too. Though if they weren't 14 I'd probably give it more time because it causes the yuri goggles to freak out.

Although a nickname for Meme could be "Forget-me-NOT". Hurp hurp hurp...
