It matters.

Hardware cleanup

My software is ok, I'm just worried if I open up the box I'll mess it up with lightning from my fingertips or something

It'll be fine, just ground yourself by touching something bare metal in/on the case every once in a while. With the computer off and unplugged, of course. A can of compressed air isn't necessary but a good idea.

Seriously though, a can of compressed air upside down is fucking cold. I forgot about the keep upright rule dusting inside an old AV receiver once and I was afraid I'd get frostbite.

Apparently, you can use this to freeze bugs. I hear you could do it to metal to get it brittle then shatter it though I've never tried. my can just ran out ;_;

Speaking of which.
Never tilt the can too far sideways or upside down. You'll get liquid bad all over whatever you're trying to clean, and it's not good for it.

Thanks guys, but what about touching the internal components?

It's really not something to worry about AS LONG AS YOU GROUND YOURSELF FIRST.

You HAVE TO ground yourself first. If you get up, if you move, if you breathe funny, ground yourself. Seriously.

But other than that, there's really nothing you have to worry about. I wash my hands and dry them really well because I'm superstitious about skin oil, but otherwise I'm really rough with my hardware and nothing's gone wrong yet.

I use a leaf blower with a nozzle on my rig. Go big or go home, magets.

wat?

I've considered using things like that but I always get worried about static electricity.

PC power supplies are directly connected to the ground through your home's electrical wiring. By touching bare metal on the case, you dissipate any electrostatic discharge through this instead of frying any sensitive components.

I said before to unplug anyway because I figure there's enough hardware in the PSU itself to absorb whatever charge your carrying. And I really, really hate being electrocuted. My hands already spaz out when I'm trying to handle things delicately without rogue electrical signals trolling my nervous system ;_;

So I just touch the case occasionally?

I thought he was talking about the other kind of grounding

Yup.
