Photoshop CS5? Well, it can't be tha--

>edge selection algorithms that appear to work
>auto-clone area effect tools seem functional
>variable-point warping
>noise reduction isn't self-replicating anymore

JESUS CHRIST I'VE HAD DREAMS ABOUT THIS

But...

On one hand, hooray! I don't have to work so hard anymore!

On the other hand...

There's even less separating amateurs from professionals in photo manipulation anymore. Complex warping and faithful edge selection were the gauntlet. I think I'm ok with it, though.

I bet when tablets and image editing software first came out, traditional artists (oil paints, brushes etc) got pretty pissed too

I'm just laughing really hard at the irony of you complaining

You seem to have missed the part where I said "I'm ok with it, though."

Many art forms stagnate over time because of the limits of the actual medium. Photomanipulation has largely been an old boys' club where those basic rules of edge selection and simulated dimensional warping were the absolute line of membership. Those aren't something you learn once and know it forever; industry professionals with twelve years of experience are still learning how to improve their form while people just breaking in usually never progress because of how frustratingly difficult it is. These new algorithms seem to be capable of both closing that gap and allowing the form to push forward with the introduction of new styles and options.

My only complaint is that this is god damn photomanipulation, so take a guess as to how much easier it just got to fool the general public with fake images?

Duplicate layer, then mess around with the layer effects if you want to make the writing more bold. Note that this often makes paper texture imperfections exaggerated.

Isolating the writing from the background it's on is tougher. If you use layer effects, you can remove white portions of the image (pic related), but that's kind of going around the issue - to get the writing on its own, you have to cut it out from the actual background. With examples like this, the easiest way to do that is to trace over it on another paper using bolder pencil/ink and scan that, or just trace it after scanning.

An easier way to just make the writing more legible is to go to Image > Adjustments > Layers and move everything to the right. You end up with comparable results; the method is up to you.
