Ok, let me re-phrase. Let's say Opera went bankrupt tomorrow and the company dissolved completely. Could I still use the installed version of the browser I have forever if I wanted to?

OP, I'd consider myself a bit of an expert of browsers. I use them all a lot. It does a lot of shit out of the box that firefox and chrome require addons for. Opera does have its problems, but for as long as I can remember they've only ever been improving it. I've followed its development very closely over the past 8 months or so. They aren't likely to go bankrupt, so have some faith. If they do, you'll have the beautiful Firefox 3.7 or maybe even 4.0 by then to make up for me.

tl;dr?

Stick with Opera unless there's something else you need badly from another browser. It's awesome on Windows.

I personally use JDownloader as my download manager, it's very flexible, effective, and works great with the browser using Flashgot, an addon that comes with the program.

You can tell I use Firefox, it was my choice since it's fully customisable, I mean, the interface, the program itself, addons (Mainly addons like AdBlock, Greasemonkey and such). What I like about firefox is that is user-friendly and has compatibility.

But now I'm intrigued by your statement, enlighten me, how Opera works? Can you tell if it's better than firefox for having custom functions and variety? I haven't tested it by myself but I'm always open for new things, so I'm all ears.

Let me preface this by saying I pay for ATT elite which is nothing to boast of, but it does change the game in terms of how I am doing this, as before with my other plan I couldn't just keep piling on fresh downloads over and over after the 20 mark (connection just wasn't fast enough for more). So my observations are based on this speed in the picture.

Firefox simply can't efficiently handle downloading like this, I have never seen any other browser that can, and I doubt firefox 3.7 will or whatever download manager with it...If you want to get a crapload of files in one go..the way the opera utility balances the bitrate speed for each one is genius, when I have just a few it's my full speed, and as I get more and more it balances it all methodologically, using up every bit rate just right in the scope of the number of files I am receiving...Other than that I still use firefox for browsing too and enjoy all the awesome addons for just surfing the net, Opera is like the hardcore awesome machine I use just for downloading, although aesthetically speaking I think the pages look great on it too. I also have chrome and I find it completely useless since it doesn't do what I've mentioned well either. I'm so glad to hear the chances of Opera bankrupting or anything are slim, I keep a reserve installer of the 10.5 so if I try any newer versions that have messed this up I can always go back :).

There is some inherent flaw in download managers or what comes in other browsers, that doesn't do this as well (try downloading over a bunch of files at a time, each around 50-100mb, and see for yourself if your speed is as high as mine on jdownloader...tbh I have not tried that one but if it's like Down Them All and used turbo/boosts/etc it's hopeless). My style is a bit of a niche because I don't torrent and prefer rapidshare which usually means more puzzle pieces being put together for the whole. I still get quizzical comments from time to time when I mention I use RS, but I'm afraid a lot of people use to torrenting severely neglect the amount of treasures that people package with it now, just take a look at any of the sections here as an example:

So really unless you somehow need this feature of using the best bitrate-rationing download utility for a large number of files in a download session... whatever you use is otherwise fine, and I definitely would not recommend Opera as a substitute for Firefox in terms of customizing it the way you want, I think in my entire time of using it I maybe have downloaded one script, firefox is much better with that sort of stuff.

And yes, I tested firefox with down them all and chrome with the current connection I have, to see how they would measure up with Opera.

JDownloader isn't NOTHING like those programs. This program is a standalone app that runs on java, making it "sneaky" when doing it's job.
JDownloader's main purpose is to download from every server that provides storage services (Ex. Megaupload, rapidshare, etc, etc, etc), the only thing you need to do is provide the share link of the file and it will do the rest; it will beat the captcha, download the file and even extract it or join multiple PART type files (The ones with the extention .001 and such), and everything will be done automatically.
The best thing is that you can change the settings to tell the program what or not what to do.

As a general download manager works excelent, because not only every link leading to a file (Even coded links) on your clipboard will be exported to the link manager waiting for your configuration and approval, but also you can put a specific number of links on "boxes" or "packages" (Work similar to folders) to organize everything, every box or link will be saved on the list until you decide to delete it, make container files to distribute your links or for backup purposes, a reconnection feature to skip the time between every download (Basically changes your IP), it even supports premium accounts so you can download as a premium user with JDownloader (Don't worry, the Devs already stated that they respect the users' privacy), along with other many functions.

Gave it a shot, basically I get a lot of timeouts for alot of files when I try to do a giant bulk at a time..I assembled all the boxes/packages with the links and then started downloading each one by giving a minute or two for it to keep downloading before adding the next box, but I got timeouts soon enough, also I can't seem to raise the max number of downloads over 20 at a time (have it set to 20 already)..but it doesn't matter at this point.

I do love the fact that I login in my rs and it automatically collects the premium links, this would save me time, and when I just downloaded one group at a time at first, which had like 4 files, the speeds were great and I loved the functionality.

Overall this is a nice, sleek utility that serves the purpose better than Down Them All and other download managers probably, but again, it can't do huge amounts of files all going on at the same time, at least it didn't for me. For 6-8 big files at a time it might be perfect though, but I don't need the fancier user-friendly settings if it can't multi-task the bitrate like Opera can for large orders and I already download just as fast with fewer files on Opera as jdownloader.

It's kind of a shame because with Opera, I don't have some choices like the links all grouping easily like that instead of having to click the pages themselves, and if I close the browser for example I lose the downloads and have to start over, I can only resume or keep downloads going while the browser is open, so it's stuff like that which is a bit of a negative side on relying on just what comes with it, but yet it still seems to be the only one able to do this...

BTW the links that do timeout, do eventually begin to download again when another file that's finished downloading is traded I guess...I lose too much time this way..I'm still waiting to see how long all these take but it's just not flowing like Opera. Basically it's like jdownloader times out files while giving good speed to others until they finish so it can 'shift' the bitrate to the remaining stalled traffic and finish it, while Opera keeps all things alive and trickles the bitrate proportionately to the number of files going on, I like this much more.

That's really strange because this doesn't even happen to me, I actually can download multiple files at the same time, according to the limit, of course. I believe it's for stability purposes, although I heard you can change this in the inner configuration of the program, settings which are usually changed by people who are giving support to the project, in other words, people who know what they are doing.

Now, I have a theory about the max connections limit. You, being a premium user, have the privilege of downloading at a maximum speed and the server eventually releases more connection points to do so. This can lead to an obvious conclusion: with the program already handling 20 connections (The actual limit; see the lower part of the program) it won't accept more until at least one of them is closed, which in the end works similar to the max limit of downloads at time.

It's a shame seeing the possibility of downloading files at maximum speed not being at it's full effectiveness due to such limitation, again, we can't blame the program for still being in Beta (Although it doesn't look like it is, since it seems very stable).
