Does anyone have Ubuntu installed on their PS3? If so what do you use it for?

well the military use it for running their military stuff

Don't think a lot of folks with a PS3 have another OS on it at this point, since an update removed that feature for older models some time ago. As much as I was interested, the whole thing didn't really seem worth the trouble

This. With a number of capabilities being blocked or gimped in alternate OSes on the PS3, there's just no point for most people. You can't emulate games like you'd want to, the processing power isn't there. Sony has ensured you'll never play a new PS3 game again if you want to keep an alt OS.

It would be *nice* if this wasn't going on. I'd love to use my PS3 as an *open* media center for my beautiful 46" HDTV. But I have other options that don't hinder my ability to use the system for its original purpose: Blu-Ray and PS3 games.

Military used to rip out the chip and use it, but they don't anymore due to dod cost/benefit analysis.

They use some IBM creation now.

The only game I've played is MGS4...I guess since I don't use my PS3 for gaming, I would rather get some other use out of it...any suggestions?

PS3 Media Server. Other than that, I think they're releasing an app store for it soon.

Personally I think there are a multitude of better solutions for media servers than the PS3. Especially if you're like me and want the same file support you get on a PC.

(MKV files, I'm looking at you)

PS3 Media Server transcodes MKV, and it lays like a charm (especially if you have a modern CPU)
