Hey guys, in anticipation of B&W's release I'm training up a new team that I can trade from Pearl to my new game, so that I can go through the game with my team, but I've got one big question.

Fucking Effort Value Training, how does it work?

Do EV points only count for the level you gained them on, or all levels after it?
How do you keep track of EV points?
How do you distribute your EV points?
Where are good places to EV train?

So in this thread, we discuss Effort Values, Individual Values and Natures. All the stuff that goes into raising a good pokemon.

Once you get an EV-point, it sticks around forver, unless you use the EV-reducing berries.

Pen and paper, counter app for the Poketch in DPPt, memory...

255 is the max amount of EV points that can go into one stat, 510 EV points total per Pokemon. However, 252 EVs in a stat will net you the same value that 255 would, so 252/252/6 spreads are most common. I rarely deviate from that.

There's a whole FAQ about that on GameFAQS, I think.

Here's the skinny; in every battle you earn Experience Points in, you also earn Effort Values. Any Pokemon that earned EXP from an opponent earns the same amount of EVs, including Pokemon holding an EXP Share.

Every Pokemon gives out anywhere between one and three points in one to three categories.

Every four points a Pokemon has in any stat earns them an extra stat point.

The vitamin items, Calcium, Carbos, Protein, etc., contain ten EVs each; however, you're only allowed to use ten of any one on your Pokemon. Similarly, there are special berries -- you'll know them by the description -- that will remove ten EVs from a certain category, while still raising your Pokemon's friendliness.

No.9306
Ahem...there are also special hold items. The Macho Brace doubles any EVs you come into, while halving the Pokemon's Speed. The Power items work similarly, though instead of doubling any EV points, it just gives you four of whichever stat it represents.

Now, for EV training...it's best to find an area dense with Pokemon that give out only one type of EV.

In Pearl, I can recommend going to the Old Chateau for Special Attack training, thanks to all the Gastly.

Route 201 is a good place to train Speed or HP EVs, where the Starly and Bidoof will be helpful, respectively.

Attack EVs can be found at Route 202 or 207, via Shinx or Machop.

There are also Geodude at Route 207 where you can get Defense EVs. You can also get them from Magikarp anywhere.

Your best bet for Special Defense EVs are probably Tentacool, who can also be found practically anywhere.

So I guess you want to do EV training as early as possible then.

Man, it seems like a pain, especially because you can't view the progress of your points manualy. I can't believe people actually do this, because it seems so tedious and difficult.

What about Individual Values, the variation of stats that a pokemon has to begin with? Is it work worrying about?

When you breed pokemon, the offspring come out at level one, so it's very difficult to tell if their IV is good or bad.

Are IVs so influential that it would be better to catch new wild pokemon, or to use the babysitter/pokewalker to get my bred pokemon up to level 10, just to see their IVs?

Dude, you sound like you're EV-training for the in-game enemies.
Do not do this.
It's like 50 times more tedious, WILL make you hate living, and is entirely unnecessary. Wait until you beat the main storyline before EV training.

If you're serious about competitive battling, yes, IVs are important. There's a big difference between 350 Attack and 380 Attack.
The best way to check IVs is to get a friend to enter a level 100 Wi-Fi battle with you, while you have a team of your Pokeoffspring. That will temporarily level them up to level 100, allowing you to check their IVs with all but 100% accuracy.

Should I EV train my Meowth even in-game since it's a goddamn Meowth?

>The best way to check IVs is to get a friend to enter a level 100 Wi-Fi battle with you, while you have a team of your Pokeoffspring.

Savvy! That's some great fucking advice. Still it only means you can check six at a time, but that's better than nothing.

And no, I'm not training as I play though the game, but I have yet to get that fucking macho brace.

The main thing I hate about IVs is that, if you get a shiny pokemon, it can still suck ass.

When I said "as early as possible" I meant "While the pokemon is still young"

The EV points you gain increase the stat gain per level.so if you were somehow miraculously able to max your pokemon's EV at level 10, it would grow up to be ripped.

EV training early in the game is pointless and tedious, mostly because the macho brace makes everything x2 faster.

It's really something to be done after the Elite 4

Proper training is what separates casual players, from competitive duelists.

You can't pick up just any pokemon and train it. You want to be the very best, like no one ever was.

It's pretty easy to get a Pokemon fully trained by level 10.

But really, it doesn't matter. You get the stats you're owed no matter what level. I've had stats go up by 72 points at once before by trying to train a much higher level Pokemon.

Macho Brace and Pokerus. If you're going to spend much time doing EV training, finding someone online who will trade you a Pokemon with Pokerus (who's still contagious) is a must. Between the Macho Brace and Pokerus, EV training time is 25% what it would normally be.

No.9351
>>9346
If you're training against Pokemon that only give out one point, the Power items are much more effective. You get five points instead of just one. I still don't know for sure how Pokerus affects the Macho Brace and Power items though.

The only time the Macho Brace is better than a Power item is if you're grinding against Pokemon that give out three points apiece.

No.9354
>>9351
Pokerus still doubles EV gains even with the macho brace / power items.

So, a pokemon that gives 1 EV + Power Item + Pokerus = 10 EVs

It's the greatest. 25 goldeens to full attack EVs is awesome.

Even fewer than that, if you have ten Protein to spare.

Just stick them next to each other on your roster and wait.

No running around or fighting? Just time?

Nope, just time. Running around probably doesn't hurt, though.

I thought it only worked via fighting.

Speaking of which, how does one obtain them? I has none.

Battlan. Every Pokemon you battle gives you up to 3 EVs, either all bunched into one stat, or seperated into two.

Hate to say it, but Magikarp do not give defense EVs.
They give speed.

So HG and SS introduced items that allow you to pass IV from parents to offspring.

Shit just got even more complex

Sadly, a lot of pseudo-legendary pokemon with high base stats are sexless.

So I ask you, how do I catch a Beldum with good IVs?

Johto Safari Zone, bitch.

What, when they swarm in that area where there's a sandstorm? They always end up KOing themselves before I can catch em.

Sexless can still breed with ditto.

Dang, I thought for sure it was Defense. I looked 'em up just to find out which EVs they gave, since they're so plentiful and wonderfully low in level.

...Usually.
