The way player characters interact with NPCs must come across is pretty creepy to them. Trying to throw pokeballs at trainer pokemon, answering the phone and saying nothing for long periods of time, riding your bike back and forth through a town to hatch an egg... Maybe the reason trainers stop you as you walk by is because you're staring at them with a blank expression. Just... Staring. Smiling. Never responding to anything except a challenge.
