What kind of setting would you like to see in pokemon? I personally would adore a game set in the far past, maybe a medieval era setting. It would give an excuse for new pokemon, say that they were pokemon that existed before they either died out or were killed by humans. Maybe call the games Pokemon Bronze and Pokemon Steel?

I would really like to see a futuristic space exploration version of pokemon were you explore different planets and catalog new pokemon. i'm pretty sure mew is from outer space so it sort of makes sense that there would be pokemon on other planets. the bad guys could be Team New Genesis. they are trying to find the perfect planet to rule over and do evil from and you find out about the plan on your travels and have to stop them.

You are beginning your journey as a sailor when your ship is attacked and you and your childhood friend and future rival are the only ones left alive, being young and healthy you are shanghaied into service for the pirates that attacked you. Your rival eagerly pledges allegiance and joins them, but you and your friend escape the first time they make port, stealing two Pokeballs on your way off the ship to protect yourselves with.

Upon learning of your escape the pirates immediately begin to search for you, giving your rival the third Pokemon to help them. The two of you decide to split up so they don't get both of you, and promise each other that when either or both of you becomes strong enough to take out the pirates, you'll meet up again.

The game's storyline follows your adventure through numerous coastal towns and nearby islands as the pirates hunt you and your friend, taking on the Team Rocket role and you having to constantly fend off the lackeys, as well as keep track of their movements throughout the game and avoid getting caught. The Gym Leader equivalents would be old sailors, retired soldiers, traitors to the crown, etc. as you have to keep your training underground so as not to give away your movements.

The final "gym leader" will be your rival, who has trained directly under the captain since your escape. After beating him you start a search through a chain of islands in a completely new area that, once you depart for, you can't return to your old map until you beat the game. I haven't thought this far, but the Elite Four will be something like four legendary infamous pirate captains that, if you beat them, will arrange for your transport to the hideout of the pirate gang that's been chasing you. It turns out your friend has also beaten the Four and was waiting for you, and the two of you take on the Captain and your Rival in a double battle.

After you win the pirates don't disband or anything, the captain just recognizes your skill and strength and promises to call off the hunt for the two of you, giving you a deed or something so the two of you can acquire your own ship after they return you to the mainland. The game then becomes a free play where just you and your friend travel the two maps (along with a few new areas unlocked after beating all the bosses) catching Pokemon and challenging other trainers and sailors and pirates and stuff until the next game comes out. The legendaries would be some kind of Kraken or Leviathan type things.

Oh and bounty hunters, I forgot to mention that. Since the pirates put out a reward for your capture bounty hunters are gonna be an essential part of gameplay.

The Mew/Celebi/Whatever Pokemon is Cthulhu, or at the very least Dagon.

...Or no, Dagon is the Mewtwo of the game, and you need a Shiny Dagon to get into the Cthulhu Distribution Event.

The event-only Pokemon will be given at a single event that is impossible to attend for most if not all of the people who want it, so there will be no way to legitimately obtain the Pokemon doyoucwatididthere.

Something like this would be interesting.

From the very beginning, the pokemon games have depicted a world with somewhat futuristic tech. Teleporters, capsules that can capture and store animals and monsters, all sorts of ornate and technologically advanced gyms, but what was life before that? Like when Oak, Agatha, Bertha, Blaine, and all the other old folks were in their teens? When they couldn't rely on cataloging the pokemon they saw with electronic encyclopedias or catching pokemon in pokeballs.
Basically, I'd like to see a game that took place 50-60 years ago, before any of the futuristic advancements in science you see in the games. Honestly, I think this would make a more interesting 5th gen game than an inevitable rehash of Ruby and Sapphire.

Nintendo really should go for a different setting for Pokemon. There are plenty of excuses they can use to make new pokemon and other features too. I mean im sure the past of the Poke World had pokemon that no longer exist.

Hell, if Nintendo wanted they could even change up the Pokemon game for a past version. Instead of Elite Four and gyms and shit, maybe some reasonable story line of Team Rocket or some past Team Rocket esque team that you face, instead of Elite Four, you face their top executives and such, and instead of gym leaders they could be highly skilled team members or something. I like the idea of a noir themed pokemon game

Going further with artist themes:

Michelangelo: Machoke/Machamp
Magritte: Ditto. It comes out as a Pikachu. "C'est ne pas une pikachu." Alternatively a Snorlax with a bowler hat and a berry for a face.
Munch: Haunter doing the Scream face.
Van Gogh: bunch of Sunflora and an Aipom with an ear cut off.
Dali: Muk being supported by some sticks.
Andy Warhol: a Potion.
Jackson Pollock: Missingno.

Love this idea. The game focuses on the future pokemon professor as a young ward whose final task before he can graduate to a pokeologist is to go out and catalogue as many known pokemon as possible. Instead of a Pokedex you start off with a jorunal (maybe a few places are filled up with some common pokemon like Rattata and Pidgey?) and a map that's only half charted. You're given a newly discovered type as well, charged with watching it's growth and reporting it's progress. Battling a single type multiple times is also ideal as you'll pick up more information as you go. Same goes for catching.

Pokeballs are a lot more simple, with the "master ball" type item being a prototype regular pokeball. You only carry six on you because it becomes inconvenient to do so with more. This can even justify why you keep one out of the ball: having one walking around means you have one less pokeball to carry. And since the technology isn't sophisticated yet, they are heavy. Legendaries are almost impossible to catch because of how weak pokeballs are.

The Pokemon league either doesn't exist or is just starting. Gym battles are more of a pass time activity. Instead of badges you're looking to gain letters of recommendation from famed pokeologists, so that you can face off against the board of admissions and ultimately you have to face off against your own master with the pokemon you've raised using the knowledge you've gained.

Afterwards you get to travel to other regions, like Johto, as a form of studying abroad.
