My theory is this: Each devil fruit contains a devil that grants the eater of the fruit a power. Eating multiple fruits gives the eater multiple devils, who then begin fighting and cause the host body to explode. This is confirmed in the Enies Lobby arc.

My theory is that the devil in the Yami Yami Fruit is the most powerful one, allowing it to suppress other devils even within the host body. This would also explain why, despite being a Logia type, Teach can still be hit by physical attacks. If you were the most powerful, would you give up all your power to your host?

Oda couldn't elaborate on whatever allowed Blackbeard to do this before now. If he had, it would have made it incredibly obvious right from the second the Gura Gura fruit was revealed what his goal was, and 'what the hell is Blackbeard up to' has been one of the big sources of tension for a while.
