AAAAAH UTENA AAAAAAH I LOVE YOU ;~; i mean ok the end of the movie still makes me go "holy shit what" but oh my god i love this fucking series so much. I haven't watched it since I was a wee little girl (well, I watched the movie a month ago but not the show) but fffffff I would literally kill all of you for a chance to have a proper FUNI release of Utena.

I'm actually pretty surprised that Funi hasn't picked this up yet. The company that licensed it went out a while ago, and they even picked up X before this.
M-maybe this means they could possibly be looking into releasing the new awesome updated version that came out on DVD in Japan? I surely hope so...

What's so good about this series again?

-Characters that look simple at first, but with the aformentioned symbolism become really complex and interesting. Most of them have weird sexual hangups
-Three different goddamn incest couples
-Champion lesbian fencers who are also angsty
-Exploration of different gender issues (In Utena's world, you're forced to become either a prince or a princess. You aren't allowed to live outside archetypes).
-Commentary on handling problems, honestly and forthrightly or through passive aggressive underhanded schemes.

Well there's only like two confirmed lesbians. I was surprised when I watched the show and it didn't turn out to be BRIMMING WITH SAPPHIC PASSION as the art suggests. But the two explicit lesbians turned out to be so cool it didn't matter.

Well, the film version pretty much made Anthy and Utena a couple as well, but personally I'm not too big on it because it didn't focus that much on rest of the student council - and they're the ones that I touched base with the most in the series, especially with Juri and Saionji's issues.

Utena's definitely a female main character that I can respect(and have a slight girl-crush on).
I really liked the first part of the series, but when it got to those repetitive episodes with Wakaba, Kozue, and those other chicks, I couldn't help but be reminded of those pointless repetitive Sailormoon episodes. The series just seemed above that, and it was kind of out of place to me.
The movie was my favorite though.
