It's that time of year again where I feel a serious need to play some Harvest Moon. Unfortunately the only game I have is Rune Factory, which didn't really live up to my expectations, so it's relieving my craving the way licking the inside of an ash tray would sate a nicotine addiction.Does anyone know if any of the Harvest Moon games for the DS are worth playing? Also let's have a general Harvest Moon thread.
I liked Rune Factory because it had Tabitha. ...On the other hand <-- CANNOT HAVE. Rune Factory Frontier is much better, but it's for the Wii.I'm told that DS Cute is good.
>>89385If DS Cute is anything like Harvest Moon DS, then it's a glitchy grindfest that was rushed out to turn a profit. THERE IS A HARVEST SPRITE SOMEWHERE IN THE GAMEIT DEPENDS ON YOU WATERING A COMPLETELY RANDOM LOCATIONYOU CANNOT GET MARRIED UNTIL YOU FIND IT AND 60 LIKE ITThe best part, tied with the game randomly eating your save file, was that accidentally littering makes everyone in town hate you. Weeds, rocks, doesn't matter: -1 Influence to all villagers. Guess how often that'll happen?Rune Factory 2 has treated me alright, although there's a bit of stat grinding towards the end (see also: the part where I stopped playing and found something better to do). But loli twins, riding a giant wolf everywhere, and the ability to water my crops with lasers make it a fun ride until that point. You can have a goblin horde!
>>89386Supposedly DS Cute fixes the thousand and one glitches that DS had.Course, the localized version takes out the lesbianism.
Of all the N64 games I would have bought if they had remade them for the DS Harvest Moon would be #1 on the list.
>>89387But does it fix the gameplay issues, or the rage-inducing Harvest Sprites?>>89389See, I always preferred Back to Nature for its characters, but I loved some of the features 64 had (bathroom, photo album, a way onto your roof, wives that actually helped around the farm). If they ever make some combination of Back to Nature, 64, and A Wonderful Life, and throw in a hint of Animal Crossing, I will probably die of sleep deprivation and malnutrition. It would consume me.
>>89391A Wonderful Life actually has a really ;_; ending if you have the sort of time it takes to GET to said ending. The big problem with it and Another Wonderful Life was that the years were just too damn long for the amount of content they had.
Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar comes out in a few weeks. Some of the things this guy talks about sounds really cool even if his manner of speech doesn't fill me with confidence. With any luck it won't be terrible.http://www.gamespot.com/ds/strategy/bokujoumonogatariyoukosokazenobazaare/video/6267546/harvest-moon-grand-bazaar-e3-2010-interview-adam-fitch
>>89393My problem with A Wonderful Life is that Daryl is a creepy fucker and you can't call him out on it.And that I bought the PS2 version.
Play 64 or the SNES/Gameboy versions on emulators. Like a boss.
I love Harvest Moon.Do not love the Gamecube version. Not being able to ship produce was the big ticker, but also the lack of events/festivals.If they were there, I sure missed 'em.My favorite so far is Friends of Mineral Town I guess. If that's the one for GBA.
>>89425Yeah, that's the one. My problem with it was that every time you did anything, it would make animal noises. Moving the cursor? Baby chicks. Selecting something? Chicken noise. Exiting out of a menu? A dog being hit with a hammer. There's bad design choices, and then there's absurd.I guess my problem with A Wonderful Life for Gamecube was, like you said, the lack of events, but also having to eat regularly. And the hobo that steals produce you put in your fridge.
... Ehhh... Island of Happiness was okay, but it has that shitty, shitty control system like in Phantom Hourglass. You know what I'm talking about.Honestly, if you've got the cash and got the console? Splurge on Animal Parade, it's the cat's meow.>>89391>But does it fix the gameplay issues, or the rage-inducing Harvest Sprites? lolnope. Makes me mad, since I love the bachelors in it.I got hippies, sweet bartenders, Elvis, and grumpy professors, and it takes years for you to get 'em.
>>89384Islands of Happiness is pretty good, albeit grindy at first and with a new crop system that might take a while to get used to (also the forced stylus controls). Sunshine Islands is the upgraded version of it, with better controls and such.
>>89437>Actually had problems with PH's controls
>>89439Hey. Hey.Fuck you.
>>89439The controls sucked ass for both PH and Spirit Tracks, both because of how they broke immersion and because you have to either learn to see through your hand, or hold the stylus at this weird angle while you run.
>>89440>they broke immersion Oh yes, because there's such a huge difference between pushing a button and tapping a screen.>you have to either learn to see through your hand, or hold the stylus at this weird angle while you runLearn to not have ham-hands.
>>89461 Or have delicate little hands that can only do real work by pushing buttons.
>>89445>or hold the stylus at this weird angle while you run.I have never had this issue, and I have massive ham-hocks for hands.
It's VERY SIMPLE, David. It is much harder to put your DS up to a webcam and try to do this, though. :(
>My face when Spider and Knowredge are worse at the vidya than my father, who is in his 50s and has only played 4 or 5 non-arcade games in his life.
>My face when anon doesn't know I have a hand tremor when I try to focus on things.
>>89550And how exactly are they supposed to know about your disabilities?
>>89561Lurking more, of course! Here on Plus4, we know everything about everyone!
>>89550Maybe you should trade your hands for some better ones.
The Rune Factory franchise was shit, and I still hold a grudge against +Cog for suggesting it to me. It lacked all of Harvest Moon's strong points, the farming was clunkier than Harvest Moon, the village was smaller and more heavily pre-scripted, and there simply wasn't as much to do. Plus Rune Factor 2 creeped me out. All the character art looks shota/ loli. What the fuck?Harvest Moon though, I don't really get what's the point of even buying new ones. HM SNES, HM 64, and HM for the PSX are all you ever really need if you get that itch that you can't quite scratch. I haven't bought a HM Game in a decade.
The jump to true 3D is what's really killed HM for me. The franchise was perfectly suited towards Semi-Chibi /anime/ exaggerated character art. Everything started to feel off in the PS2 and Gamecube games.snobbish_opinion.jpeg
>>89550That's not the game's fault then.>>89638The girls are better, and the farming is the same aside of a trade in of monsters and animals. >implying that riding a giant wolf isn't more awesome than riding a horse
While Phantom Hourglass had great stylus controls, the stylus stuff in the Harvest Moon games on DS were generally pretty clumsy in comparison. Luckily Sunshine Islands let you ignore them for the most part, and was much better because of it. It's a shame, because there were actually a lot of neat innovations in Island of Happiness that I liked and would've enjoyed a lot more if it weren't for the clunky control scheme.
I have always meant to play a Harvest Moon game but yet I haven't.Any suggestions on what one to make my first?
There is almost no good fanart of the Harvest Moon girls....unless you count the female PCs, that's dirt-common, but that doesn't count.
>>89673My favorite to date was Friends of Mineral Town because there was so much to do, but I understand a lot of people consider that a strike against it. But I think general consensus is that the three best games in the series are Harvest Moon 64, Back to Nature (PSX) and Friends of Mineral Town (GBA), with which one of the three is best varying from player to player. FoMT was a remake of BtN to a certain extent, for what it's worth.
>>89673 Depends on what you like and how traditional you want the game. It'd be best to try one of the older games on an emulator just to get the basics down so you don’t overwhelm yourself but then again it might be too simplistic to jump into any of the newer iterations after it.
I just preordered Grand Bazaar today. I'll make sure to be extra critical of it.
