Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in /writ/, but whatever. So, yeah, vidya novels - discuss.
Man, I have no clue why I give as much of a fuck about Halo stuff as I do.Contact Harvest is the best one though. I also really liked "The Mona Lisa" short story.
I hear the Halo novels are actually pretty decent. I recall one person (I think on here) said that he's kinda pissed that the games basically ignore them because they might actually make the games stories enjoyable.
Just read Mass Effect: Ascension. Ehhhhhhhh. I'd like it more if my higher-than-average experience with autism didn't make me go "Man, this is inaccurate and inappropriate" for certain scenes. Still felt super bad for Gillian and jesus now I finally get why some people hate Cerberus.
Halo had a wonderfully fleshed out universe. It's such a shame so little of it came through in the games.
>>88582That would be me. Halo's one of my favorite franchises but goddamn i wish they actually used all that good writing from the novels. Also i heard they're retconning a bunch of shit in the Fall of Reach novel to include shit from Halo: Reach. oh god i SO MAD.But First Strike is fucking amazing and any decent Halo fan should read it. Shit is so cash oh my god.
What, no love for Gears? The books are pretty solid; they give you plenty of fluff, some depth to the characters, and let's not forget Bernie.
Do Visual Novels count?
Very related to OP. It's pretty much the same mentality and relationships between the squadmates. The only difference is that the grand army of the republic wasn't on the losing side.
Loved the first three Halo novels. Read them multiple times. Bought the new ones and can't bring myself to go on. They just aren't that interesting.
>>88593I thought Ghost of Onyx was alright. Cole Protocal is pretty meh though. Evolutions is a bit of both though.Never ever read "The Flood".
>>88593I didn't really like any of the new ones except Contact Harvest.Because THE FUCKING SARGE.
>>88586>retconning Fall of ReachOH HELL NO
Karen Traviss is working on a new halo book that is a sequel to Ghosts of Onyx. I am very super okay with that.
> Ghosts of Onyx sequel> Traviss has clarified the term "sequel" in regards to the statement by saying: "It isn't a sequel to Ghosts of Onyx in the sense that you mean a sequel, i.e. a continuation of the same story with the same cast — these novels are just set after it and follow the events of Halo 3. There'll be new characters and new storylines."Goddammit, don't call it a sequel if it's not a sequel.
>>88640fucking cocktease! >>88588I've only played the first game and read the first novel, Aspho Fields. Holy shit, the world is even shittier than the games let on. And everyone is pretty fucked in the head.
>>88593I still haven't finished Ghosts of Onyx and I don't know shit about the rest of them. I know Contact Harvest has SERGEANT MOTHERFUCKING JOHNSON in it, which is awesome, but oh god Onyx was so boring christ>>88624SO MUCH FUCKING RAGE YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW
Eww, videogame novels.
So I picked this up at Borders last month, thinking "Oh awesome, God of War." and "Cool, written by the guy who wrote the Revenge of the Sith novelization."STOVER, I'M DISAPPOINT
>>88653...How the fuck do you write a God of War novel!? It would just be "and then Kratos murdered a bunch of dudes" for like four hundred pages.
>>88655It was...The whole thing was just "OH YEAH SLAHCUTSLASHCUT FUCKEVERYTHING!!!!111!!! OH DEARGODS TEH VISIONS OF MAH DED FAMILY!!! GRRRRRRR SLASHCUTSLASHCUT"The only decent parts of the books were behind-the-scenes snippets of Athena persuading the other gods to help Kratos.
>>88653direct adaptations are the worst ideas ever.
>>88659I was about to post that Penny Arcade comic on the Command and Conquer novelization."...and then the Harvester returned, hold filled to the brim with Tiberium, before setting back once more."...Y-yeah, if you're not going to even attempt to write a story, don't waste the paper.
