I'm not sure if I started a thread on how these new designs are terrible but since it's a Pokemon board why don't we start a thread on how these new designs are terrible.

This board's too slow for this, Moe.

I'm on board and agree completely.

I let my little sis look at my Pokedex 3D one night during a long drive.
She's about 18, only had exposure to Pokemon when I was into it back when she was like 8. Kind of a hidden nerd, trying to be a cool girl but really only wants to play video games.
That preface about her is to ward any accusations of bias on her part for her opinions I'm about to recount.

Her comments across the Pokedex were comprised mostly of, in order:
>Cute!
>This looks like <insert Gen I Pokemon here>
>This is ugly
>This is just a dog/zebra/duck/bird/alligator
>What the fuck is that even supposed to be?
>Why does it have all these spikes

Let's cease dismissing design criticisms as just trolling, Pokefans.

>had exposure to Pokemon when I was into it back when she was like 8
Tainted by nostalgia. Worthless.
>> No. 26106
I don't give a FUCK what anyone says.

Voltorb and Electrode look dumb as hell.

OHH LOOK AT US! WE MADE MIMMICS IN THIS WORLD!

It's stupid in D&D To be fighting a living chest, it's stupid in Pokemon to be fighting a sentient ball!

She knows Pikachu's name and vaguely recognizes the others from a cartoon she saw me watch over a decade ago. Never played a game.
She's not nostalgic for any Gen.

It's a bit more stupid to be fighting a tree and ice cream cone, eh?
>> No. 26112

There are already creatures in the real world that mimic sticks to blend in.
Sudowoodo just takes it a bit further.
>> No. 26113
Archaeopteryx Pokemon is the best design. This invalidates all other arguments. The end.

If you get pissy about an ice-cream cone monster but don't find it almost equally as stupid that something would be a round red and white BALL thats only means of defence is killing itself then I dunno what to tell you.

I am aware bees kill themselves too yes. But they have an excuse! Where is Voltorb's hive/queen/colony it must protect!?

It's a "mimic" enemy+bomb.

Aside from the last criticism, the same is true for pretty much any gen. And in fact, even other gens had spiky shit.

>Cute!
Chikorita, Swinub, etc
>This looks like <insert Gen I Pokemon here>
Pichu, Noctowl, Misdreavous, and so forth.
>This is ugly
Wobbuffet, Gligar, Forretress.
>This is just a dog/zebra/duck/bird/alligator
Houndour, Ursaring, Noctowl again, Spinarak, Mareep.
>What the fuck is that even supposed to be?
Wobbuffet again, Chinchou, Togetic, Dunsparce, Girafarig.
>Why does it have all these spikes
Skarmory, Sneasel
>> No. 26121
>>26117

I know that! I said it's stupid to fight living chests in D&D and shit. It's dumb to fight it in Pokemon.

Fuck I think I'd have liked it better if there WERE just bombs laying around that you'd have to fight but couldn't catch. It'd be dumb and add a layer of confusion mechanics/reality dissonance but it's not like Pokemon is somehow free of that crap.
>> No. 26122
If anything they've just gotten more iconic. A d I mean that in a graphic design sense. Very few are as detailed as syther cloyster and rhydon where. Excuse possible spelling errors.
Its mostly about keeping them easily recognizable from a glance, and so many other monster catcher series make the mistake of overdesigning their characters. Covering them in silhouette distorting details and attachments.

Jeez, you have a total party wipe to a mimic or something?

Pokemon are like animals on the fast track of genetics with their evolution and what not; it's not hard to imagine them adapting to human-made objects for mimicry.

Which reminds me, what DO real animals do in the pokemon world? If Gamefreak wants them to take the place of regular animals, they have to stop alluding to them in dex entries and so on. And if real animals DON'T exist, then people in the pokemon world must eat pokemon! Unless they're all vegan. Which doesn't exclude plant pokemon.

Oh, right. Bad designs, blah.

>>26123
According to Satoshi the comics in which Pokemon are the animals are closest to how he envisioned the world. Pikachu scurried about chewing electric wires in homes and Pidgey flew in flocks over the villages.

I don't think it needs to be discussed, we KNOW people eat Pokemon and they just avoid that fact in most fiction.

Look dude, if you like Voltorb fine.

I'm just saying it's kinda dumb you'd get mad about an icecream pokemon when pokemon have been fucking pokeballs since gen 1.

Voltorb and Electrode are the only pokemon that I can find who break the "Noticeable by their Silhouettes" mould.

Huh? Different anon. I just don't get your hate for mimics.
>> No. 26131

There have been instances of normal animals in the anime. Plants exist in the Pokemon world despite there being plant Pokemon, so why wouldn't normal animals be able to coexist with them too? Also, if only Pokemon exist, Kanto's ecosystem is in some massive trouble with only 145 known extant species.

The Pokemon world and the Pokedex entries make so much more sense when you think of them as yokai instead of animals. This is a place where spirits exist, everyone can interact with them, and they have become a vital part of society.

Are you agreeing with my point, or saying UGH DESIGNS HAVE BEEN SHIT SINCE GEN 1?
>> No. 26224
I do agree that some of the new Pokemon designs can be a bit cluttered, but everyone who lauds Gen 1 as the only generation with good designs seems to forget just how boring some of those designs were. Do you remember how many Gen 1 Pokemon were basically "The previous evolution, but three." Dugtrio is three Diglets with angry eyes, Dodrio is a Doduo with three heads and extra feathers, and Magneton is three Magnemites with a paint job. I give the newer generations credit for having more imagination.
