Then I think Grieve-tan just sort of stayed popular until 2013 when Leggy took hold.

After Leggy things got muddy since people began to actually fight over what was popular, taking the "of the month" part of it literally and trying to designate characters to months.
This backfired terribly as people now seem to be either more interested in arguing over what is popular or too put off from all the arguing to hold interest in any character for as long as they would have otherwise.
