It's less intuitive than most of the other classes, yea. I think bards are supposed to be less literal bards and more along the lines of shamans or druids, minus the religious aspect. The prince commands his element to destroy or be destroyed , as fitting of a class named after a type of leader; the bard summons his aspect or opens its defenses to destruction, but probably cannot control its actions once summoned or destroy it with his own hands. Judging from gamzee's actions durring the battle with the Black King and in Horrorstuck, there might be a possesion-by-aspect or "allowing the aspect to act through the self" element to bardhood too.

The closest we can get, that I know of, is the Egyptians who revered frogs as symbols of fertility and life and had a frog-headed god called Heqet.
