>>51661 On the forum, too. I saved it because I thought it was an interesting post (I can't remember when it was from-- might have been when the HOLY SCHNIKES BRO IS KAMINA thing first started, actually):
>I never saw the anime in question, though I had some awareness of it. You never know what influencing concepts will seep in, or from where. HS was always supposed to be loosely inspired by Earthbound, but even I wasn't aware of the extent to which it was influencing it. There was stuff in Earthbound I'd completely forgotten about, like the psychic elements, which found their way in.
>But in this case I suspect I am just tapping into the same line of thinking as various Japanese creators who create characters like this. Badass with a sword. Cool shades. Not much more to it.
>All the guardians were always supposed to have aspects of the "archetypically generic", which helps solidify their motif of faceless anonymity. The generic dad with the hat, pipe and tie. The mom with the homemaker lush thing going on, with a twist of "Jackie Onassis sharpdressing" I guess. This strikes me as a template. Same with bro as the classic awesome dude/total broseph. Their generic and anonymous qualities advance the classic sort of alienation between kids and adults you see in cartoons a lot, notably Peanuts. Yet paradoxically, these generic qualities also seem to help make the guardians feel like more distinct characters I think. They seem to exist as a species completely different from the four kids.
