Why are there so few actual comedy series nowadays? Occasionally we get a decent one like High School Boys or McRonald's, but it seems like the dominant genres are romance and action.

There are very few romance series. Almost any series is action or comedy. Harem series are comedy, not romance.

They can be both. Romantic comedies are a thing.
>> No. 88421

They are, but harem shows are generally not romantic other than like the first and last episodes. All the rest are just a bunch of pretty freeloaders getting into hijinks.

Hmm? There are still a number of comedies. Off the top of my head there's:

-Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time
-Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san
-Is the Order a Rabbit?
-Engaged to the Unidentified
-Seitokai Yakuindomo
-Sakura Trick
-Kiniro Mosaic
-Non Non Biyori
-Yuru Yuri
-Love Lab

I agree. I've tried a few anime comedies from this generation and they weren't funny at all.

Only one of them actually left an impression of me and it was Axis Powers Hetalia. Too bad the English dub gets on my nerves. I'm just a picky person when it comes to anime.
>> No. 88425
This is kind of a weird thing to say coming out of a recent season that had some of the best comedy anime in quite a while in Zvezda, SYD and Space Dandy.
>> No. 88427
I've been kinda outdated. Some time ago I watched some episodes of Gintama on a stream here, and it was pretty funny though. Maybe the comedy animes changed too much from the days of Ranma?

>Too bad the English dub gets on my nerves.
Odd. I found that the English dub managed to push a strictly above-average comedy over the edge into genuinely enjoyable.

More importantly, Kodachi a shit, get better taste OP.

So what do you guys think the best anime comedies are? Sgt. Frog is probably my favorite, and is one of the few series where I'd highly recommend the dub over the sub. It's like one half accurate translation, one half abridged-series where everyone just makes fun of the show.

Ghost Stories dub is also funny, the original version of that show was absolute dreck though.

Cromartie High is a classic.

Desert Punk can be pretty funny at times.

Oh, and Panty & Stocking.

Now that I think about it I liked the dub for these shows over watching them subbed, which is the reverse of how I usually feel about a show. I guess comedies just lend themselves well to dubbing.

Your list left off Excel Saga and Azumanga Daioh. For shame.

Honestly, while I *like* Azumanga Daioh more, I think Nichijou is the most I've laughed at an anime in its original form. Though if we include dubs, I would have to give the crown to Shin-chan.

I tried getting into Nichijou, but I stopped early in the second episode. I just wasn't laughing. Closest I came to smirking was the dropped food bit in episode one. I'll probably give it another go soon, but not now.

Heard the series was even too niche for Japan's taste.

>>88436
Yeah, "niche" is probably a good word for it. I can certainly see where other people might not find it as funny as I do. But as someone who finds things like comic underreaction and artists putting far more work than is necessary into a silly joke, it hit my funny bone exactly.

Nichijou is very hit and miss. Some bits are utterly amazing, but I've also sat stone-faced through entire episodes.

Ukyo is also a bad person.

Obviously not as bad a person as Kodachi, who is a (rather one-note) drug-using murderous attempted-rapist with absolutely no redeeming qualities.
But trying to use blackmail and underhanded tricks to force a guy into binding marriage with you against his will is also low.

Shin-Chan is an excellent comedy; I'm talking about the American dub, where they pretty much scrapped the original script and wrote adult humor to glorious results. Sad that it only lasted three seasons, while the original has two decades of material.

Maximum pleb. I suppose it's only fitting that someone with such low standards would settle for someone of such low standing.

What about Lucky Star and Jubei-chan?
Yeah, the former is more like otaku Seinfeld and the latter is kinda more action like focused, but still are comedies, right?
>> No. 88467

Desert Punk was a little too lowest denominator for me.

And for Panty & Stockings, like half the charm of the show is lost in English. (That being the random English they just threw in.)

Hey, if you want a woman who will smash your balls and call your a whore instead of a woman who will squeeze them a bit too much and cook for you, that's your call, pal. More Ukyo, most top Tsundere-Tier gal, for the rest of us.

I don't prefer the English dub because of Italy's voice. Hearing that stupid mario/bad italian accent is like a knife to my kidneys. I think I'm not sold on it because of my encounter of "Lets Players" who think its funny to impersonate Mario's voice badly over the years. Or it just could be my opinion.

Also I hate Italy in general.
Both of them.
I really don't give two shits what some rabid fangirls say, I hate those fucks, they are so annoying.

But the rest of the countries are golden. Especially Prussia.

I always wondered why Shampoo was the only one to have hair that was truly anime-esque.
