Eh, I didn't really care for this week too much. I know covering back stories is basically this shows schtick, but this just felt way too episodic. Besides which, it only had a few funny parts.

THIS SHOW
THIS FUCKING SHOW

Utena left me uncertain for years, but this show helped me decide for certain that Ikuhara was and is a bad director.
>> No. 78651

I loved Utena and hated this, but my opinion remains that he's a fine director.

Which I think sort of sums up why I didn't like MP: the power and impact of it relied almost entirely on the direction, not the writing, which relied on "What will shock/surprise the audience the most?" And since I couldn't give less of a damn about the story or characters, that charm was lost on me.

Loved episode 16, though.

>>78651
You can't claim he's a good director when he clearly doesn't know how to direct. There were scenes with literally hundreds of costumed extras just standing there not knowing what to do while the camera panned in a boring circle around the main characters. On everything he's made before he's worked with small casts and competent cinematographers who could mop up most of the drool, but by the time he made this nobody like that would go near him, and it shows. He was way out of his depth.

Mark my words: By the time Korra airs, everyone will have forgotten this movie.
>> No. 78658
My experience with this ended up being much like my experience with the OTHER would-be Utena successor, Star Driver (in that case it was the writer and not the director though). First episode was "FUCKING WHAT!? OH MY GOD THIS COULD BE AMAZING," but it ultimately just wears on you.

This stayed fresh longer than Star Driver though.

>There were scenes with literally hundreds of costumed extras just standing there not knowing what to do while the camera panned in a boring circle around the main characters.

I don't remember a single instance of this ever occurring in his works (referring only to Utena and MP--no idea how his work was on Sailor Moon), much less MP where the extras were white-cutouts of people passing by...

I'm also confused by your Korra statement, but I assume you mean "by the time the second season airs"? I agree that I can't see MP being upheld as a classic in the future, however. But I suppose only time will tell on that front.

That was my reaction too.
Especially whenever he broke out the "No-o-oh"
