For whatever reason most anime being produced these days just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe it's the usual stuff we constantly hear people complaining about: Bad plots, moe uguu~, merchandising, an incestuous fan/producer relationship, the shift to digital, etc, etc. Or maybe I've just grown older and changed too much as a person. Whatever the case may be, I'm just not enjoying most series the way I used to. So I've been going back and watching old anime from the 80's and 90's that I never watched before. I just finally got around to watching Macross Plus, and despite its stranger moments and a few flat scenes, I really enjoyed it.

Do any of you have a classic series you're very fond of and feel like recommending?

Does G Gundam count as a classic? Wait, who am I kidding, of course it's a classic. Watch G Gundam. It is what happens if you hire someone to make a Gundam series and they think you told them to make the most racist Super Robot show ever.

I'm sorry but did you just call Tequila Gundam racist? Because I believe the word you were looking for was "AWESOME".

Also, wasn't necessarily looking for just more mecha shows. Seriously, throw some obscurity at me. I'm interested in whatever you have. If it's a good show I won't be afraid to try it. I mean hell, I'm in the process of trying to find a dub of Beast King GoLion so I can watch the uncensored original.

Galaxy Express 999. I saw the compilation movie when I was a kid with no fucking clue what "anime" meant, and it tugged my naive little heartstrings.

I remember enjoying Iria back in the day. But I was young then and I can't swear my fond memories for it weren't just lack of experience. Same with Record of Lodoss War....I actually went back and rewatched that recently, and it was still pretty good, except the animation on the bigger creatures (if you can call it that) was ridiculous.

Not really,, I mean episodes are only 20 minutes long, something like The Sopranos or The Wire is much longer. Or to compare it of others more similar, any Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, etc

When you compare it to the length of other anime, well it's longer than most but at the same time isn't particularly long, considering that most shows that go beyond 100 episodes go on for considerably longer.
>> No. 67340
But we are talking anime rather than HBO Original Programming or whatever else you want to compare it to. Really, anything longer than 26 episodes is pretty long.

The 80s might be hard considering it was the time when almost everyone in the west seemed to be hiring out japanese studios to make stuff like CBN and SuperBook. Whole lot of super robots, with the occasional Dr Slump.

Already seen LOGH and its side stories. Well, except Gaiden. Working on that.

>>67344
Come on, there have to be other kinds of shows beyond mecha that were made during that decade. There was too much money floating around for there not to be.

Is Vision of Escaflowne old enough to count as retro yet? (My perspective on this is a little skewed.) If so, and you haven't seeing it. That would be my suggestion.

Record of Lodoss War. One of those classics everyone should have watched by now. But it should be mentioned in the thread.

The Slayers is pretty fucking awesome stuff. Plus, if you watch the dub, half of the cast is the cast of Pokemon and also Crispen Freeman.

The original Ghost in the Shell, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (not THAT old but it looks/feels like one), any Leiji Matsumoto (Harlock, Emeraldas, Galaxy Express), old Miyazaki (Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Kiki, Porco Rosso), Akira, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, old Lupin...

that's a start, I guess

You owe it to yourself to watch Gundam 0080. It's only 6 episodes, but it's probably the best thing to ever come out of the Gundam franchise.

I'm finally watching Outlaw Star. Its pretty sweet, lots of action, cool space ships, neat environments.

The way the story is structured is kind of odd, not the kind of thing you'd see these days. It takes a long time for them to even GET the freakin' space ship, as in several episodes, and almost half the series to get the core cast aboard said ship, even long STILL to set up what their searching for/what the end game is.

This certainly isn't a bad thing since everything's paced very well and the characters are excellent. Its just very different from the way many animes are structured these ways where the main cast and the overall premise/goal of the show is summed up within the first few episodes.

Outlaw Star's continues to have one of my favorite conclusions of any anime in that they find the Leyline, have their epic battle, make out like bandits... Aaaaand then Gene gets arrested for the illegal launch from the first episode. AND THEY'RE STILL IN DEBT, AFTER ALL OF THAT.
It's just a hilarious moment of snapping an epic, over-the-top sci-fi climax back to the realm of reality.

I freaking love Outlaw Star. This is making me want to rewatch the series. I'd love to read the manga, too, but I can't seem to find it...

It differs heavily from the show. It kinda comes from the earlier days of manga-to-anime adaptations where the story of the manga wasn't nearly as important and a lot of faffing about was allowed compared to now.

All I've ever found are around the first three chapters. The art is interesting, but kinda amateurish at times, looks a little DeviantArt. I'll try to track it down.

I never really cared for Outlaw Star when it was on, but a year ago or so, someone on /a/ offered up a Livestream session and I decided to join in. Watching it with the diehard fans, and reading all the comments and in-jokes and catchphrases they wrote as the episodes aired, made it just hugely enjoyable.

Oh, and seconding Escaflowne, it has really good music.

I'm also FUCKING FINALLY watching Gunbuster for the first time.

Initial impressions are a little... surreal, if that makes any sense. I'm hyper aware that this is the "first" of several common anime art/design/storytelling devices that pop up again and again not only in GAINAX work, but everywhere.

Its like watching a very old comedy movie: the style and tone is one you recognize, but everything is presented in a very basic way. You have to take a minute to wrap your head around the fact that how your used to seeing things in modern offerings of the genre came from the old film's specific stylings. Its a little trippy.

I just got around to watching Totoro for the first time.

God damn Miyazaki. How is it that you can make a movie where nothing happens and I can still be grinning like a motherfucker through the whole thing?

Yep. Gainax really loves bildungsroman stories. The only popular Gainax stuff that aren't adaptations and coming-of-age stories I can think of is Panty and Stocking, and maaaybe Honneamise.
