We haven't had a Disney General in a while.

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck concept album being produced by Nightwish's Tuomas Holopainen has been dated for release sometime in April 2014.

While it wasn't a terrible film or anything, quite frankly the story of HOW THE HELL they got this movie out of The Snow Queen would probably be more interesting. I mean seriously, I can sort of see how a neutered Hunchback became the Disney version, and changing Tarzan from White Men Are Awesome to an environmentalist tract was a no-brainer, but the changers here were mostly just... weirdly unnecessary.
>> No. 220010

Essentially, the adaptation process got derailed all the time because they got too caught up in the idea of a Snow Queen and wanted her to play a larger part in the story to the point where they just started going "Fuck it". Hell, a pitch Michael Eisner was interested in for the SNow Queen was basically just a romantic comedy about the Snow Queen trying to find a man to warm her frozen heart.
>> No. 220011

That's not too far off from the original, though. I mean, she abducted a guy in the original version too. It's not much of a stretch to turn the Snow Queen into a female Bowser.

Got back from taking little sister to Frozen. It's... an okay movie. My main problem is that my GOD I hated a lot of the music, other than 3 or 4 of the songs I found it all very annoying. The "model" you'd be off in this case wouldn't be the 3D model itself, but whatever concept art or real life object you're basing it on. For instance, the parts of most 3D models can end up in positions where the parts clip together, detached, or have their surfaces split apart. Certainly not something you'd consider on-model.

I ended up seeing this with a friend since 1) She wanted to see it, 2) It was playing right when we were in the mood to see a movie. We ended up seeing it in 3D, and there was a really great Mickey Mouse Short before the movie that I loved that was done in the 30's style, and switched up between 2D animation and CGI/3D. It was spectacular.

As for the movie itself, I thought Olaf was going to be awful, but ended up being one of the better parts of the movie. I'm glad they kind of strayed away from the "True Love is everything" message, and it was pretty reasonable. The movie is one of the few I've seen that actually uses 3D well, and the animation is gorgeous. I actually didn't catch the animation errors others were talking about.

The story was... Kind of middling. I liked the whole Hans faceheel turn twist, and even though I was exopecting it, they managed to hide it well enough that when it did happen, I was surprised.

Anna got a little grating at times, and I know the story (in the movie) is about her overcoming her own naivete and learning to be reasonable, but goddamn at some points. The story probably would have been better off without the trolls. They weren't really needed, and didn't add much to the subplot about Kristoff and his childhood. Like, they were really unnecessary (I assume they're a hold over from the original fairy tale?).

I felt like the movie also didn't pace it's songs well enough. It felt like their were too many back to back at the beginning, and then weirdly placed through out. "Let it Go" was good, and I kind of liked "Wanna build a Snowman," but I felt it went on a little too long. The troll's song felt really forced, like they were really trying to drive home that there was romantic tension between Kristoff and Anna, in case you didn't get it before.

Overall it was a good movie. Also, since me and my friend were talking through the credits, we ended up seeing the after credits scene.

This isn't an error, it's deliberate, and it's not noticeable at all in the actual scene unless you are specifically looking for it (and even then it's hard to catch). Picking on this to say the quality isn't good is like picking on tweens in 2D animation. They look "off" but you can only see them for a fraction of a moment and they're actually needed to keep the animation fluid and interesting.

It's kind of a big mistake to equate everyone angry with Frozen to people who don't give a shit about it in any other instance. Also equating relatively low budget TV shows with short production times to a big feature film that had been in development for several years. The thing is, they had the money, time and fanbase to do something unique, but they chose to play it safe and ruined the original story's message and intentions in the process, and the sameface didn't make it better.

The new story might be good in its own right and have nice twists of its own but it is pretty obvious why it was changed, and people have a right to be angry about that.

Alright, maybe it's a little hypocritical for THEM to say that, but not everyone complaining was a part of them (hell one critic was the aforementioned Coelasquid, not a big sameface supporter herself - liking/disliking a movie doesn't have to be an absolute thing.)

Yeah I heard it was from an animator, but hey it's the internet so maybe my source was bullshitting. Either way it was a horrible statement to make because again it flared up the problems people already had with the movie.

Itself is going to be an interesting movie. And likely a confusing one since one of the kids is said to be hers in their little screen Descendants show. Disney gets more and more Fanfictiony with each passing generation as more that grew up on it begin to actually work in it. Not bad thing, just interesting.

Also possibly linked something in the back of my head says some kids/tweens somewhere in that bracket show is going to take a stab at "non-traditional" relationships bleh stupid terms. But something gives me a feeling about that subject coming up next year.

Possibly course that was before the Frozen thing really kicked into being its own sub community over on /co/. Working on an idea for a Frozen series simialr to Sophia the First for older kids. Getting Frozen into the shared universe I find an interesting concept and practice since they are open to the whole use of their properties in new fictions. Core concept is Elsa is off to make herself part of the larger royal community and Anna is overprotective and seeks to protect her by tagging along in disguise. Elsa is never fooled by the ruses and just teases Anna along until the end of the story at which time Elsa each disguise that Anna wore. Anyone know of anything that tells how to construct a pitch? I think this could work as a show idea between the Sophia and Once age groups.

Just got back from Frozen--it was actually really good. The music, as has been noted, was largely forgettable (though I did kind of like the "Let it Go" number, even though it was basically just "Defying Gravity: Snow Queen Version.") and even actively out of place from time to time. But Anna is probably the most likable Disney princess I've seen, and I loved how it avoided falling into just going by the usual Disney Formula.

It was quite funny, too, in a lot of parts. And not just from Anna being a huge dork, but from genuinely well set-up jokes and stuff.

Like it matters. Even if it was nominated, Monsters University wasn't even in the same league as Ernest & Celestine or The Wind Rises.

Frankly it's an insult to those two movies that The Croods, Despicable Me 2, and Frozen are the other nominees.

It doesn't but as much as they usually fawn over them I find it interesting they were utterly shafted this time around. Kinda want to see what reception Frozen gets, and really hope they don't mention the tumblr headcanon.

oscar politics work like this: the studios push the movies they want awards for super hard to the academy so that they get nominations (read: pay a shit ton of money to get nomination). disney wants everyone to think that disney is back on top of its game as the undisputed king of animation so they push their non-pixar film super hard (frozen) while pixar is caught in a contract that demands x number of sequels to previous movies since the loss of steve jobs has wrenched creative control from lasseter to disney execs (proof of which came out after it was revealed that disney execs ruined brave and pulled the director from the project because her vision wouldnt move toys). this is a political grab by disney, its underhanded and its immensely shitty.
