Okay, how do you folks come up with your teams? And how many Pokemon do you usually have.

For example. The younger inexperienced trainers will tend to raise just their starter with little effort to other Pokemon.

There are others who go with a straight out team of six and play them all the way through.

Me, I prefer to cover as many of my type bases as I can so I end up with a team of about 10ish Pokemon that I switch out occasionally.

What do you do?

I try to get a variety of types, 2 physical attacks, 2 special attackers, and 2 that doesn't rely on direct attacks.

No.10451
Eight pokemon of differing types, one is always a starter. Since the NPCs don't have much in the way of strategy, I just plow through with sweepers and tanks like Gyarados, PorygonZ, and Snorlax.

In-cartridge? I play with my favorites, i.e. whatever I think is cool or cute. Pic related.

lineup: 4 permanent members + 2 hm whores + 2 substitute members

I try not to mix types on my team, and have the most useful shit I can get. Like, my SS team is a Nidoking, a Typhlosion, Fearow, Gyrados, Jumpluff, and Ampharos.

Combination of covering all bases type-wise (i.e. getting a team that doesn't have a crippling weakness against a specific type, and a multitude of attacks) and Pokémon I like. I don't typically go out of my way to get a specific Pokémon just because I like it or think it'd complete the team, though, so I typically will always have the starter and one or two pokémon from early on in the game.

I always get a Gyarados though. I know it's a terrible idea but I do it no matter what.

just pokesav up all of my favorites even though their stats are generally terrible

6 Pachirisus.

Accept no substitutes.

I figure out who my favourite Pokemon are, then try to make a team consisting of the most powerful and most varied Pokemon.
Try to make a balanced team out of my favourites, basically.

No.10494
I try to keep a pretty consistently leveled team of various types. If at all possible, I try to get dual typed monsters to serve both slots.

No.10501
depending on how ambitious I currently feel. I have a large bunch of relatively high leveld pokémon that I think are cool and useful, and a core team of 6 favourites that are the highest leveld. Sometimes I put together (and grind up) specialist teams for gyms to get the best possible typing, otherwise I just go with the core team.

I just pick my favorites. Why would you do anything else?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find choosing six favourites out of 493 pokémons pretty hard.

I must always have a girafarig named Kaku

Always.

I have a hard time using a team of my favorites in-game, because most of my favorites are all wall and tank-ish, and those are hard to use in the story mode.

yeah, i've pretty much been agonizing over who to put in the last slot for months

I put in the cool ones!

Usually I shoot for a team with no overlapping types, yah, but the Pokemon MUST all be cool! This is not debatable.

That doesn't necessarily mean looking cool, though. There's all sorts of reasons! Maybe it has a cool move that no-one else does! Maybe it's really fast, or super big! Maybe it's just a Pokemon I'd really like to hang out with!

Sometimes I specifically pick one I don't normally use--my Diamond run comes to mind, where I took a Remoraid as my Water-type and stuck with that all the way past the E4, because I never saw Octillery on any of the lists that get posted here. Never regretted it.

I've got like 12 favorites, so that's like two teams.

Funny I've got a Pachirisu at around Level 84. I put it on my team for awhile until I got Rotom in Platinum, then I just left it at the day care center.

Soon after I transferred it to Soul Silver and left it in the Day Care center and fed it rare candies. It's not on my team. I just like it's Pick Up ability.

But yeah, cool Pokemon are a must. Pokemon that branch evolve or the like will also be used in my team repeatedly. I had 3 teams in my third generation games. Each one had a Castform. One was designed to be a Water(Rain Dance) Castform, one a Fire(Sunny Day) Castform and one an Ice(Hail) Castform. If they make a Rock(Sandstorm) or a Flying(Fog) type I'd so welcome back Castform with open arms! They need more weather conditions!

I have theme teams; one for each and every type. I like pretending I'm going to become a new Gym Leader or Elite Four member after I've beaten the game. Except I overlap Dark/Ghost and Normal/Fighting.

But my favorite team that I use in every generation is my Land Wallace team. It's full of ground/rock/steel types. Always have to have my Flygon and Aggron. That Aggron has gotten me through some rough spots; managed to finish off the Elite 4 and win every beauty contest I enter her in.

No.10586
I operate entirely by type
Only recently I started to pay attention physical and special balance.

Also I tend not to trade out pokemon sticking me with terrible pokemons that are the first of the type I need.

No.10617
Before, I always focused on getting powerful Pokemon, type coverage, physical/special split and such.

But for my HeartGold game, I decided to pick a team of six and stick with 'em all the way through.
To be honest, I'm finding it a lot more fun. I became attached to them in an almost Nuzlocke-y manner.

No.10624
My only rule is that all pokemon are two types and none overlap. Having less than 100 in their attacking stat tends hurts their changes, though looking cool enough is usually enough to overcome that (e.g. Lapras, Nidoking). By pure coincidence, my final SoulSilver team was perfectly balanced with 3 special attackers and 3 physical attackers, and 2 each of males, females, and genderless.

No.10629
High attack and speed, good type diversity (the Pokémon themselves and moves).

No.10709
I like to have as many cute Pokemon as possible... In Platinum I have about 14 Pokemon that I switch out.
