Because we need a place for one off questions and comments. Like for example, holy crap I had no idea the Japanese voice cast to NO MORE HEROES has several strawhats in it. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/japanese-debut-no-more/59714 and I think I heard Garp in there too.
I'm in the middle of the Thriller Bark arc. Usopp is so crazy awesome SAVE ME, SOGEKING!

Totally a double post, but I gotta get this off my chest: FUCK elitist one piece fans. you are the worst people on the fucking planet.
>>1021 ...Elitist One Piece fans? Wait, how the fuck do they manage to be elitist about One Piece? It's got exploding boogers, for godssake.
>>1021 You mean the people who say you have to agree on a certain list of opinions in order to be a true fan, like never shipping anyone? Yeah, I agree. Fuck those guys.
>>1026 GOD, these are the same people who will argue to the death about anything Haki or Logia-type devil fruits. It is absolutely unbearable and horrifying being on Arlong Park forums anymore, and this is coming from a senior member of that forum.
>>1027 See this is why I'm hesitant to join any Dragonball forums; I'd love to find a place to discuss it, but I know I'll have to deal with a million assholes whining about who had a larger power level. Also, people telling you there can only be ONE DEFINITIVE NAME SPELLING.Knowing that similar shit would happen in a OP forum only makes me more pessimistic about the whole thing.
WHY DO YOU REFUSE TO DO THE DOCKING, ROBIN? YOU SPOILSPORT.
>>1049 It fits with Robin being the "mom"
>>1021 Yeah this is true. Now I can understand when some just want to explain why it's (probably) the best shonen currently in production and there is some fuckwits who won't read it because it "looks childish hurr durr bleachiscool" but still, get the fuck over yourselves.
I know that people generally accept the idea of Sky Island = American Indians. However, I would like to offer an alternative. >The Ainu refer to themselves as "The Sky People." They even have a monument on a hilltop in the Saru Valley in the exact spot they believe their people first landed on earth. http://www.orientmag.com/7-31.htm
>>1058 Oh yeah, I remember reading about those guys. Man, Skypiea was just Metaphor Central.
>>1061 Let us talk about fun tidbits of this arc that a lot of people miss: When they're introduced to those Jayan pumpkins, we learn in that flashback that those weren't indigenous, and Norland introduced them to Jaya with the help of his crew and Calgara. The people don't greet each other with a typical japanese greeting, but instead use heso, which sounds a bit like hello. This is also the word used for a person's navel. Japanese children are told fairy tales where they must cover their navel when they hear thunder lest their Storm God take it away from them. Eneru's designs are based on Buddha, Japan's Storm God Raidou, and the white rapper Eminem. The designs of some of Eneru's Priests are based off of old Hanna Barbera characters. See if you can recognize a few of them.
>>1058 Man, the dude in the middle kinda looks like what I think Jimbei would look like if he weren't a whaleshark.
>>1063 We learned that because Norland brought over the pumpkins, Jayans hold them pretty sacred, hence why Wiper was all like "FUCK YOU GAN FALL STOP DRINKIN MY PUMPKIN JUICE RRRRGH SO ANGRY"
>>1063 I know wish to see an image of Gan Fall and Eneru facing off in a rap off. Also, Shura is mother fucking Dick Dasterdly. The rest I cannot quite put my finger on.
Ladies and gentlemen of plus4chan's /op/ board, I give you... Fear.
So, Gol D. Roger, Silvers Rayleigh. If we ever see a Bronze whoever, I think we can safely assume he was on the Oro Jackson.
You know, while I'm glad that some voices aren't nearly as annoying (such as Luffy) in the Funimation dub, I miss some of the voices in the 4kids dub; namely, I really enjoyed Sanji's accent, it fit him well. His new VA is rather... vanilla.
You know, I just realized that Duval reminds me a bit of Hokuto no Ken, just the way he dresses and stuff. It doesn't help that Sanji's knives apparently had "Hokuto no Ken" engraved on them.
>>1150 Whaaat? Sanji's voice in 4kids was one of the absolute worst of the bunch. His Funi voice may be too bland, but 4kids went WAY too far in the other direction. He sounded like a stuffed up rhino.
>>1171 Yeah, it was guttural, but it had this Brooklyn thing going that really fit the character.
>>1150 >>1176 Personally, I've always thought a Cajun or French accent would work best for Sanji.
>Just got to the most satisfying motherfucking punch in the history of histories. Replace "her" with "his"
>>1171 I think they found a good match. What I really like is that Eric's giving his attacks the same enthusiasm the Japanese VA does. You watch Sanji fight in Japan, he calls out his attacks with FEELING! "COLLIER! GIGOT! MUTTON! SHOT!" And it's the same thing with Eric Vale. The problem with the 4Kids actors is they either had a stupid accent or they were only capable of expressing one emotion. David Moo had both problems. He had a stupid Brooklyn accent AND he sounded perpetually bored. Eric's kind of bland when speaking normally, but he excels when he's Calling Out His Attacks.
Yes yes, it's filler, BUT IT'S MOVIE TEN FILLER! It turns out Shiki's got a mad scientist working for him. And his plant is to take over the world... WITH SUPER ANIMAL MUTANTS! The guy even had some kind of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ooze in his hands when Shiki started laughing.
>>1181 Emotion really is what makes or breaks the VA. I was neutral about Funi!Sanji until he started fawning over Nami. That suave, cool-headed persona melted and was replaced by a blathering lovestruck idiot. "Now that's Sanji," I thought.
Oh my goodness these are so adorable it's practically criminal.
Someone said that it makes a surprising amount of sense to imagine the Strawhats as characters in a tabletop RPG. Luffy's player is an unashamed minmaxer (Luffy's only skill is asskicking). Zoro's player doesn't really care about roleplaying, so whenever they're out of combat his character is "asleep." Nami's player is one of those sneaky rogue players who never stops being a sneaky rogue. Chopper's player is someone's younger sibling who tagged along. Robin's player is that one girl who writes over 1000 words of backstory for her character. Oda is the BEST GAME MASTER EVER!
>>1334 Luffy also makes friends quickly though, and at least tries to do new things. He seems more like a new guy than a minmaxer. Zoro, however, not only doesn't do anything but fight, but doesn't seem to be ABLE to do anything but fight (seriously, do you ever see him do ANYTHING on the ship?) He's a total minmaxer.
I just got to the island Sanji landed on. Oh god I feel so bad for him.
>>1336 I vaguely remember him helping out with the actual sailing in some of the the earlier chapters, probably after Nami bitched at him for doing nothing.
>>1337 I'm still interested in seeing how the crew gets back together.
>>1341 Zoro helps out sometimes, he also ends up carting a lot of shit. He's like a pack mule.
I just thought of something. If Brooke wont die of old age...does that mean he could potentially be alone again after the strawhats and Laboon pass on?
>>1474 True friends come from the heart. If you keep their memory alive, you're never alone! ..... and plus Brooke will have ended up meeting so many cool people through Luffy and Crew that he probably could just join a new crew. Plus, he was kind of stuck in the Fog on a busted ship with no Shadow, so he was kind of trapped.
>>1474 Considering their lifestyle, the chances of ANY of them living to old age is a bit scant.
>>1484 Agreed, the Strawhat crew isn't going to last much longer after they find One Piece. Luffy is pretty much destined for a bad end, and so is Zoro. Brook might just drown himself after he reunites with Laboon because if I recall correctly the only point to him living was delivering the Tone Dial message to the whale.
>>1000>>1005
>>1491 I was actually just saying they live dangerously, not that any of them would actually off themselves. His old point in living was to deliver the Tone Dial. He's living it up now that he has the Strawhats.
>>1491 >Luffy is pretty much destined for a bad end, and so is Zoro. Are we reading the same manga?
>>1510 Zoro's been heading for a self-destruction for a while now; Perona might help start steering him off that course, but seriously. It's like he's been ASKING to die. Luffy, though, he's just reckless. I don't see him being destined for anything but Pirate King.
>>1514 Nothing... Nothing at all...
>>1514 Oh, by Perona I don't mean in a shipping sense: I mean this little adventure with Perona in Mihawk's homeland after Kuma kicked the shit out of him, forcing him to let his wounds heal, should at least begin to help him get over his never-listen-to-Chopper-training.
>>1516 Whoa, we don't KNOW that Krurigana Island is where Mihawk is from... It's a reasonable possibility though.
>>1517 I'm calling it that until shown otherwise. Not as a "this is definitely right" bit, just... I can't remember how to spell Krurigana.
>>1515 Stupid sexy swordsman!
Eh, I don't get where all of this "UNHAPPY END" stuff comes from. Even if it's an early death, Luffy won't go with anything but a HUGE SHIT-EATING GRIN. If he's going out in the story, it'll be a magnificent death. The only way this would go out with a BAD END would be if Jump Comics just cancelled it, which is about as likely as Luffy admitting that he's fallen in love.
>>1571 Everyone carrying the Will of D goes out grinning. It's how Roger died, it's how Saul died, it's how Luffy will die.
>>1582 Heh, imagine Oda trolling us all by making Luffy's death mirror the Shabondy arc fight with Kuma. He's crying about not even being able to save his friends after they die, he loses the will to live on, and the World Government executes him. It'll be like I'm actually watching a Gainax anime!
>>1628 You deserve to be court-martialed for putting that image into my head, man.
Would this count as racist, I wonder.
>>1808 Probably. And based on his name and wardrobe, I think that Apoo is supposed to be kind of Chinese.
>>1808 Nah, just some friendly appearance harassment.
>>1815 But his whole tribe is like that, man. They're the Longarm Tribe.
>>1816 >tribe >race *cough*
>>1820 I'd think that if an entire group of people have a distinguishing feature, in this case being and extra joint, they'd count as a race. Maybe. Not sure how the classification system works on that.
>>1628 Hahahahaha, man. Honestly, I don't see that happening at all. From what I've read in interviews and what not, Oda seems like the kind of who wants to end his story on a happy note. Outside of that, I have no idea how this story is going to end, Hell, the only person who knows how this will end is Oda himself. He's known for a while, he just needs to get there.
>>1854 I agree that it's definitely going to have a happy, simple ending, just like Dragonball.
You know, I've been binging on chapters lately, and I've been noticing this a lot: In the lower right hand corner (I'd have highlighted in a more noticeable color if Paint wasn't making ever color that it's black gray), what is that border for? It's separating one continuous scene into two panels.
>>1877 That's left, goddammit. Also I dunno, I think it just splits the page up better. Makes for a nicer layout and keeps the panel from looking stretched, you know?
>>1877 Split panels indicate a change in time or location. The greater the number of splits, the more that time/location changes. They are in reading order, too, so little panel pieces on the right mean "panning over" to the current location, while on the left it means the focus is shifting elsewhere. Up to down is the same thing, but used less often. Read chapter 514 for a good example.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHOPPER!
>>1897 Oh damn you're right, I almost forgot. Happy birthday, doctor! But of course that won't make him happy, seeing as I'm a bastard.
>>1898 I can remember the first time Chopper was complimented.... "BASTARD :D!"
.......
I got a bunch of Season Two DVDs for Christmas, and all I can say is that I forgot how face-numbingly awesome Laboon and Whiskey Peak were. As for the voices, I'm positive that Vivi was intentionally doing a Jesse impression while playing the role of Ms. Wednesday.
>>1964 >Ms. Wednesday!Vivi in the dub sounds like she's doing a Jessie impersonation. That's exactly what I thought! I didn't even remember it was Caitlin Glass (which I knew in the first place since I saw the dub of the 8th movie) in the first place until she dropped the disguise.
At first I thought that Wapol's Funi voice was decidedly inferior to his 4Kids Russian accent, but when I realized how much it sounded like Nappa I decided that they were about equal. Also, FUCK YEAR DOCTOR KUREHA AND FUCK NO LUFFY'S FINGERS
If you chose to refer to favorite characters as such, would Bonchan be called mai waifu, or hasubando? Either way, he's everyone's brokama, but the thought lingers
>>2004 In the same way he is both Mr. Two and Ms. Bon Festival, he is both the waifu and a hasubando. Waifbando.
Say it with me now.... BROKAMA WAY! REMEMBER, OKAMA NEVER DIE!
>>2015 you sir are wonderfull
I think I've figured out why I like Vivi as much as I do: she acts like she's from a more serious shonen manga, like Full Metal Alchemist or something. She's used to crazy powers and weird creatures, but it's the characters' behavior that really throws her. That's why she's always so confused by the Strawhats and their extremely unorthodox modus operandi. Also, I just have to appreciate how she just jumped out of nowhere plot-wise. "Oh look, a Team Rocket analog. Hey, there they are again. Hm, it looks like there's something vaguely important about the Jessie analog, but... Wait, she's a princess? And now the Strawhats have to protect her? How long is this storyline going to go on?!" That sort of thing happened a lot right after Reverse Mountain.
>D: I was wondering, since Luffy seems to have so many scenes where he eats as he talks, do you actually act his lines while you eat, Tanaka-san? I've been very curious about this for a long time, so please tell me! P.N. Ayako >T: I am a voice actress in pursuit of reality! Of COURSE I prepare exactly what kind of food it is that Odacchi draws, and eat it!! >D: I enjoy watching the One Piece anime every week! I want to know if you are thinking of the feeling of picking your own nose when you say the lines in which Luffy is mining for his own gold. Or do you actually plug your honker with a finger while you are acting? P.N. Pickwinner III >T: I AM A VOICE ACTRESS IN PURSUIT OF REALITY!! These voice actor corners are amazing. I hope the next volume's SBS will have one.
>>2058 It makes you wonder just how in-character she can get. Imagine what would happen if she got caught up in the middle of a bank robbery or something. I wouldn't expect her to start punching people or anything, but if I was a Japanese criminal and I heard "You're really... starting to annoy me!" from somewhere behind me, I'd get the Hell out of there.

I JUST REMEMBERED THAT THERE IS NO ONE PIECE THIS WEEK. OH GOD.
I feel like at some point we should make a reaction thread, but then I realize we'd flood the board because OP has SO MANY GOOD IMAGES FOR THAT.
>>2146 We could make a thread for any good One Piece reaction faces we have on our hard drives.
>>2147 Let me explain something. Just getting to Sky Island, I ended up gather perhaps a hundred or two hundred reaction shots. Now you want to create a thread JUST for reaction shots, for the manga with 550+ Chapters, and W00+ anime. I do not think we would survive the attempt.
Can't think of anywhere else to post this so: Pick yourself up off the side of the road With your elevator bones and your whip-flash tones Members only hyponotizers Move through the room like ambulance drivers Shine your shoes with your microphone blues Hirsutes with your parachute fruits Passing the dutchie from coast to coast Like my man Gary Wilson rocks the most

I wonder if Bonney's devil fruit powers simply age/de-age someone physically or if they can go deeper than that. For example, what if she can de-age someone to before they ate their devil fruit and thus nullify their powers?
>>2237 Interesting theory, but it falls flat when you look and see that she de-aged herself back in Shabondy, and then was able to age back to her "normal" state. If her ability affected DF powers, than she wouldn't be able to change back. To age someone to a point not where their physical state is, but their state in time and the universe itself....I don't think age works that way from my understanding. I'd say you should consult an expert on age, but, well...the only one I know of sort of got aged out of existence accidentally
>>2238 No, that's not what I mean, exactly. The Shabondy transformation wouldn't necessarily make the theory fall flat. For example, Luffy stabbed himself in the face when he was, let's say, six. If Bonney's fruit powers only affects the physical body, if she reduced his age back to three, he'd still have the scar as a three year old, despite not having it when he was actually three. If Bonney's fruit powers goes deeper than that, the scar would disappear if she de-aged him past six. So, if the latter was the case, Bonney would be able to de-age herself to a young age, provided it was the age before she ate the devil fruit. If she ate it at five, she should be able to scale herself back to age six with no repercussion.
>>2239 >the age before she ate the devil fruit Did you mean after?
>>2246 ......yes. Yes I did.
Man I love Mr. 3's dub voice and dialogue. Fantastic.
>>2254 I love how his whole subtlety subtlety schtick contrasts with the GIANT FRIKKIN' THREE ON HIS HEAD, and the fact that he's spent most of his time in the Impel Down arc panicing.
When does the next chapter come out again? This holiday break is fucking killing me.
>>2296 It's a two week break, I think, so you've got even more to wait. Another question - is there ever going to be a Color Walk 4? Color Walk 3 only goes up to 2003.
>>2298 I was discussing that in another thread, I believe. Oda only just revealed plans for a 4th later this year.
>>2300 Nice! You're a pal, Othar.
>>2298 So next Friday. Guess I'll just have to catch up on more Kinnikuman.

>>2343 Why don't you just post the whole thing?
>>2392 Is there more?
>>2393 Yeah, it's supposed to have where everyone landed after Kuma attacked. Franky still ends up in a snowy land, but he ends up summoning Sunny to him as a giant mech, and Usopp and Robin land in the middle of Naruto filler.
Hey, on Funi's hosted videos we have both Mr. 3 from the recent episodes and the newly introduced Mr. 3 from the dubbed episodes. That's a fun coincidence.
Reading SBS leads to some weird revelations. There's a Panda Woman! Franky keeps his carpentry tools in his speedo! Oda claims to do his work wearing only fishnet stockings and a big fur coat!
Question of the day: Would Smoker get lung cancer? It'd be a bit like trying to burn fire or drown water, wouldn't it?

Just in case anyone is interested, the Funimation dub of One Piece Season 2 Fifth Voyage is out. It contains the dubbing of the beginnings of the Alabasta fight, including Captain Usopp v.s. Mr. 4 and Miss Christmas Day, and Sanji v.s. Mr. 2 Bon Clay. In b4 dubs always suck.

Okay, this has been making me curious. Why do some people call Doflamingo Don Flamingo? I mean, it's always been Donquixote Doflamingo in anything I've seen. I don't want to cause a shitstorm like the Zoro/Zolo thing and I'm don't particularly mind that people do call him Don Flamingo, but where did it come from?
>>3528 Early translations, not unlike the Oz/Oars thing.
So you know the jumpsuit Brook wears in the Spa Island filler? It's the same jumpsuit Bruce Lee wore in Game of Death. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_Death#The_yellow-and-black_tracksuit But the skull joke doesn't end there. On reading the summary a bit... "and finally Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who fights with a free and fluid style mirroring Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Because Kareem's character has great size and strength in addition to a fighting style as potent as Lee's, he can only be defeated once Lee recognizes his one weakness-an unusual sensitivity to light. Lee smashes the surrounding windows, weakening him with exposure to daylight, and finally manages to kill him." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Yellow_Jump_Shirt.jpg So they put the suit on a ridiculously tall character who until recently would have been killed by sunlight. That's the nerdiest and most obscurely wonderful thing I've ever witnessed. AND ALSO. Lee's own fighting style used by a stronger opponent? That sound like Ryuuma to anyone else?
>>3628 Woah. Filler staff, you deserve a bro-fist.

I know it sounds silly, but I can't shake the idea that Zoro would love St. Patrick's Day. People congratulate him for his green hair and he has an excuse to spend the whole day drinking! I can imagine him just living it the hell up at an Irish pub for hours on end.
>>4585 Oh man. That holiday, it's made for Zoro.

First of all, you ALL need to see this. Second, according to my sources, Movie Ten will be out on DVD definitely by April, then the shipping and subbing process can begin... Depending on the hands it falls into that could take 2-3 more months So, yes, we will probably be watching it somewhere between the end of spring or beginning of summer. Or sooner if the gods of luck are on our side.

I had a One Piece dream last night, or at least a dream with One Piece elements. All I remember is a view of this island resort; it may have been from a helicopter, since there were a couple of those in the dream. The view panned in on this giant swimming pool, and either next to it or in the shallow end (I forget which) was Crocodile, just relaxing at the resort that he undoubtedly owned. Even though that's all I remember vividly, I'm pretty sure he was the antagonist of the entire dream, getting up to his schemes while posing as a nice guy, as usual. But that's not all. Robin was also there, in her Miss All Sunday outfit, rubbing suntan lotion onto his back or something. And in my dream I was all, "You KNOW he's hittin' that."
Give him some time to grow a beard.
>>4920 I had a One Piece dream once too. Part of it, anyway. I had a dream I was part of CP9 and had eaten a Kangaroo Zoan fruit. I had sparring matches with Fukurou and played pranks on Kumadori. Then Lucci came and said he didn't like Kangaroos and tried to kill me, but I punched his bird which was his true weakness all along. Then the dream got into stuff about calculus tests, I don't know. I woke up thinking "My God, midterms have weakened my psyche so much I'm making Gary Stus with my subconscious."
>>4955 I had a dream like that as well, except I was just a normal pirate, and I was docked on this floating pirate dock in the middle of an ocean that was kind of like a market/recreation place, and for some reason Doflamingo was there.
>>4993 If Doflamingo was there that sounds more like a nightmare, dude.
Isn't BB the only one wearing a black captain's coat? I know it's just a minor detail but I think it's fucking awesome.

If these existed I would buy that Bepo shirt so hard.
I just realized Bonny wears what she wears so her clothes will fit when she goes child. Wow, a canon reason to be scantily clad. Nice.
Bad news dudes. While there will be a new chapter for us this week, there won't be one next week. Personally, I prefer to take this piece of news as a sign that this week's chapter will be TOTALLY GREAT AND STUFF.
>>5842 Well, MOTHER FUCKING SHANKS did just show up, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this week will be really awesome.
>>5842 Well, with Matt Smith first episode as the Doctor coming that next Saturday, I think I personally will be okay just chewing on that stuff for an extra week.
Sengoku's goat. Man, where did that little guy go? Hope he's okay.
>>5858 He safely got away, for you see, HE was the true mastermind behind the war!
>>5860 Devious! While everyone is shitting themselves about wtf Blackbeard just did and Shanks being Shanks he will make his quick escape.
>>5861 He's been doing this game for generations, securing his assets far away, moving from figurehead to figurehead, dipping his shadowy hoof into the political machines of nearly every major power. Marines, Baroque Works, the World Government, Pirate Emperors, the FUCKING mail service. (Why do you think newspapers are so expensive? Inevitable inflation due to a one world currency? Nah, it's that fucking Goat!) And I guarantee you, next time Dragon shows up, you'll see behind him an unassuming little goat, worming his way into another organization.
HEY THERE HE IS!
>>5862 FINAL BOSS CONFIRMED.
Is there a torrent of the Recap OVA up? I wanna get into One Piece, but I don't have the time to slog through 400+ episodes.
>>5904 Reading chapters are quicker anyways since most of the episodes literally draw out Oda's chapters for the most part and cut some things out/add weird stuff in. An important mantra most all of us will tell you is "Read up to Arlong Park." It's an important milestone for the series and for new people to One Piece because by that point Oda's direction and the general feel you get from the series starts to really solidify after that point. Also the story is written with so many Chekov's Gun moments that you'll miss a fuckton of jokes with just recaps.
>>5905 Well even so, that doesn't mean a quick summary of the end of the Arlong Park arc and onwards wouldn't be helpful. 400+ chapters is shorter than watching the equivalent of the episodes (and the arguments of anime vs. manga in shonen anime do come up), but at least a run through of what happened in between that point and wherever the recap ends would give me a better idea of what happened compared to online summaries (and far more entertaining).
>>5906 I got into One Piece with a giant torrent of Kaizoku Fansubs that went up to like Episode 300. In truth though I just watched it up until half way through Sky-Island, and then started watching the series on Watch One Piece. Then I read the Manga for Thriller Bark, watched the Anime for Sabody, and then back to Manga. The Manga has been mostly superior from this point on.
>>5906 There are what I would consider two best ways to get into One Piece depending on what you personally want. 1. If you absolutely want the best possible One Piece experience download the anime up to wherever Kaizoku fansubs is currently, then read the manga up to the present. Positives: -Its the best way to experience One Piece, since the manga is pretty badly scanlated at the beginning. -If you haven't been spoiled by anything all of the twists will be exciting and fresh. -Once you know whats happening, you can go back and read the manga to get a "purer" version of the story (the anime is generally good up until that point if you skip the bad filler) and you can keep watching the anime with other groups at your own pace. Negatives: - It takes approximately an assload of time. 2. If what you want is to catch up so you can hang out with everyone else on a generally even level you can read chapter 1, then read from page 8 of chapter 490 (the page where candy is falling from the sky) to the present. Then, you can do option 1. Positives: - You will only have to read 90 chapters, and the plot is not tightly connected to the plot of the past sagas. - The throwbacks are not essential to the plot, and there is an event that recaps everyone's personalities and fighting styles over the next few chapters. Also, there are ability recaps later on for returning characters. Negatives: - You will be completely spoiled when it comes to crewmembers, as well as some other major events. - There will be small gaps where you won't be sure about what characters are talking about. However, these are pretty much along the lines of when characters refer to their mysterious pasts in other series. - Returning characters will mean less to you, especially some fan favorites that show up that had not been seen in years. My personal opinion is that you should do option 1, because when you think about it, you're doing this for fun, so there really is no need to rush. Even if you watch an episode a day and it takes you more than a year to get to where we are now, it doesn't matter because One Piece is so huge that an extra year in the fandom is pretty much nothing. I think its been going on for 13 years now, and its currently hovering around the halfway point.
>>5928 Holy shit look at that post it could eat a small dog or a baby. ANYWAY I forgot to mention. DON'T READ MY THREAD (REREADING ONE PIECE). That is pretty much the worst way for a newcomer to get into One Piece since I skip over huge chunks of some of the best parts of the series. It's pretty much the opposite of highlighting important events.
Here's my recommendation and what I did: -Watch the series up through Buggy arc -Read Kuro and Don Krieg -Watch Arlong up to Drum Island (skipping filler arc) -Watch Alabasta -Watch Jaya -Read rest After a while the anime becomes too muddled with filler.
Remember this page? Who would have guess who that guy is. And what he's about to do.
>>5933 That's why he's the perfect foil for Luffy. He seems boorish and harmless, but he's much smarter and stronger than he seems.
Holy shit Franky is addicted to coke! Wow and it only took me, what, 5 years to get that accidental implication?
>>5993
>>5995 ...Is that reactionface because you didn't realize it either or because you're shocked it took me that long?
>>5993 I don't think the pun works in Japanese He also uses the word SODA alot more
>>5996 I didn't realize it until now, and I don't know how to feel about it.
>>5997 I know. Hence why I said "accidental implication".
>>5997 You actually hear him say "Cola" in the anime... that's not an issue of translation, the voice actor SAYS the word "Cola".
>>6004 I missed the accidental (how ironic) my bad.
Seeing that streaming the English dubs of One Piece on Pimpanime and other sites has now been cracked down on, I've decided to just use Netflix to get the DVDs I wanted. Only problem with that is, Dad controls the list, and refuses to move the DVDs up farther. So, I'm going to have to wait to see them after about 40 other movies have come and gone.
>>6021 Unless you're not American, you can watch the dub here. http://www.onepieceofficial.com/videos.aspx
dont wanna start a new thread for a stupid question but is STRONG WORLD 'out' for online viewing yet? remember people talking about it ages ago but ive been away from the fandom for stuff.
>>6090 No. We'll have to wait for the DVD release and then a subbing group to glom onto it.
1:17 OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST DUB EVER
Speaking of the dub, I watched Desert Punk a while ago and it's sort of funny to hear Sanji's voice from a far more digusting pervert (Kanta). Then I realized Kosuna has the same voice actor as Nami, but I'm not sure if that's funny or creepy.
So, question. What does the -ya suffix Law uses translate to? I am not well versed in honorifics, see.
>>6364 Apparently it's like referring to someone as Mr., but not in a very polite way.
>>6365 Thanks! Know anything about Oar's -gun suffix?
>>6366 Not sure what it means as a suffix, but when I looked up "gun" as a Japanese word it says it can mean army, district, county, or group (possibly a military-related term?).
>>6367 >>6366 It was just kun with an accent yo, he didn't speak good k's
>>6368 Thanks again! I feel all educated, now.

>>6374 I'LL RENT A BUS AN A BOAT! IF PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO COME WITH ME!
>>6374 Oh FUCK you Hawaii. Like being Hawaii wasn't good enough for your already.
>>6375>>6377 THERE! THE PERFECT... Wait... No... There's something missing...
>>6383 THERE WE GO!
>>6374 HAWAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!
STARTIN' TO HAVE FITS! HOW MUCH LONGER DO WE HAVE TO WAIT?
So we're finally front Page'd, should we ditch the Sticky on /jam/?
So, when is there going to be adorable fanart/fanfic/cover stories/whatever of Ace meeting his father in the afterlife and them getting into a big fight and then Whitebeard breaks it up and they all sit down and have a drink together? Because I want it already. :(
>>6462 Votin' yes.
>>6466 "......" "What?" "............" "What?! Why are you looking at me like that?!" "So why is it your BROTHER is the one doing all the Pirate King stuff?" "Oh my God we are not getting into this." "Maybe if you had half the drive he does, you wouldn't BE here!" "Shut up, shut up, shut up..." "Hail, hail, the conquering hero! King of the Pirates, just like his old man! OH WAIT! That's DRAGON'S kid we're thinking of!" "I'm going to talk to my REAL dad, now."
>>6480 Roger doesn't seem the type to do that.
>>6481 Yeah, but that was funny.
>>6481 Given how Ace reacts about his father and the fact that Roger apparently is a lot like Luffy, it'd make way too much sense if immediately upon seeing each other, Roger boisterously compliments his son while Ace is EXTREMELY EMBARASSED and keeps inching towards Papabeard.
>>6484 Thisthisthis. And then Roger praises Whitebeard for taking such good care of his boy and for becoming so strong and HE gets embarassed. And then he drags them both off to introduce them to all his new friends in the afterlife and to buy them a round of drinks.
You know, I just remembered something that may relate to Blackbeard's fucked upedness, Ace once said to him "You should know the Rules, having Lived through twice as much as others." Obviously I have no idea what it means, but it seems like an early mention of Blackbeard's unusual state.
>>6496 Wasn't he saying BB had lived twice as long as himself?
>>6484 >>6485 You're gonna need a pixiv account to view this, but it's a bit like what you're talking about. http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=9852323
>>6500 OR! I could be a dude bro and do... this!
>>6501 You are the bro-est of bros, good sir.
I have no idea why... but I really like Basco Shot's design.
>>6541 I know exactly why I like it.
>>6541 Calling it now: Busco Shot is Bon Clay in disguise.
>>6549 That implies there was a real Basco Shot he's impersonating. Anyway, this makes me wonder if Clay ever thought of changing into a giant or something while jumping over someone for an enormous pile driver.
>>6551 I rather doubt he can change his forms size to that degree
>>6551 Not necessarily. See our proud Bro-kama has previously illustrated he could shuffle features of those he had saved up in his copy memory. So it's possible he knew of a Basco Shot and just made up a face since no one remembered what Basco Shot looked like. After all, level six is where those BEST FORGOTTEN BY HISTORY go.
>>6552 He pulled off a Magellan.
pffft
>>6567 Okay, so maybe embedding wasn't the best idea, since it's too itsy-bitsy so see properly without opening a new window.
>>6567 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>6567 I tried to make one of those, but the video uploaded with terrible, illegible quality. Oh well.
Oh! Zoro is a monk in the Japan filler because of his Buddhist theme named attacks. I get it now. Wow, that took me a while.
>>6745 You now realize that despite being atheist, every attack Zoro does has at least one meaning that essentially means something holy in an Asian-born religion.
>>6748 Some also translate into food.
>>6748 I think everyone noticed this forever ago.
>>6748 No, that I knew.
I wonder, if Blackbeard's absorbed the gura gura fruit, will that stop it from respawning? The possibility of two people with earthquake powers is pretty damn terrifying.
>>6948 did anyone ever confirm that's what happens when someone with a fruit dies?
>>6949 ... How else could you have an encyclopedia of them, which Sanji read.
>>6948 >>6949 Probably not. Oda clarified in the SBS that a statement made meant only one person could have a given power at one time. So as long as someone with the power is alive, no one else can have it. This implies, but does not directly state, that the fruit does not grow back until the last person to eat it died. But since Blackbeard stole the power from Whitebeard's corpse, whatever was the source of power (which legends say is like a spirit) cannot return to wherever it would need to in order to grow into a fruit again.
>>6950 Vegapunk can actually tell what a fruit is before it's eaten.
While we're on the subject of Devil Fruits, here are the official English translations of the Devil Fruit names.
>>6981 Just thought it was interesting.
>>6982 >Eneru >Rumble Rumble fruit Boy I bet they wish they'd known about Whitebeard when they chose that one
I really wish we knew more about Vegapunk. Maybe he'll play a greater role in the New World.
>>6983 "Goro Goro" really is closer to "Rumble Rumble" than "Lightning Lightning" or however it's usually translated. WB will be "Quake Quake," I'm thinking.
>>6982 Hm... I think they could have made some of those names less awkward by using one-syllable words. >Flower-Flower Bloom-Bloom >Diggy-Diggy Mole-Mole (and isn't that how the Zoan naming convention goes?) >Chilly-Chilly Cold-Cold >Revive-Revive Life-Life I like Hollow-Hollow over Ghost-Ghost, though, if only because it sounds like her laugh.
>>6991 Bloom-bloom is a really nice take on it. I assume they went with flower-flower to keep consistency with the dubbing, which would have to have 4 syllables to match the 4 syllables.
>>6991 May be true, but I actually like a lot of these better than the names more conventionally used in the fandom like you find in fansubs and the like. For instance, Eneru's fruit and Kizaru's fruit are often translated as "Thunder Thunder" and "Light Light" respectively, but that's not exactly right; the Japanese names refer to the SOUNDS made by those things. Hence, "Rumble Rumble" and "Glint Glint," which are not only more accurate but, IMO, roll off the tongue better.
>>6995 Yeah; I can't argue with onomatopoeia. That's also why I don't think Bubble-Bubble should be changed to Soap-Soap or something.
Moria's weird build seems to be some kind of unique race trait. I just noticed a guy looking very similar to him. Some special kind of giant maybe?
>>7019 Pretty sure he's a member of the Long Neck tribe listed on the slavery price list, alongside the long arms and a bunch of others.
>>7020 Didn't always have a neck like that, though
Does anyone else remember this?
>>7040 Eiichiro Oda: Treading the line between genius and dipshit since 1975.
>>7042 To be fair, genius usually works that way.
I've always wanted to ask Oda if Zoro's hair is naturally green, or he just dyed it by accident one day, and decided to just act like it's supposed to be that color.
Not sure if this has been discusses already: Since we recently wittnessed the first two major deaths in One Piece... how will things continue? Was that just a taste of the new world? Or will OP be back to it's cheerful "nobody dies" atmosphere?
>>7046 To tell the truth, I'm still not sure we've seen the last of them. Don't get me wrong; were this any other manga; ANY OTHER MANGA, they'd both be deader than dead. But this is a manga where a guy survived a point-blank nuke. A magma fist through the chest is a slap on the wrist compared to that.
>>7047 Ace and Whitebeard were given burials. They're dead, Jim. That doesn't mean they can't come back, though. I'm inclined to say that OP's body count of named characters won't suddenly start accelerating. Oda's stated policy is that doesn't kill people off unless he really has to; this is just the first time that the plot has required him to use lethal force. However, between Little Oars Jr. (though his death is debatable) and Gecko Moria (who may only get crippled and thrown in jail), it seems like the series is increasing its lethality. While such developments are often bad news (see: Harry Potter), it would be thematically appropriate given Luffy's impending entry into the New World.
>>7049 Pretty sure Little Oars is alive. Shanks would have requested he be buried too if he weren't. Moria is alive until I see it stated otherwise. No way Oda's leaving us hanging with him like that. Also, I don't quite get the Harry Potter reference. Elaborate, please.
>>7047 I'd say Whitebeard is definitely dead for good, but Ace has got himself a loophole. His death was titled "The Death of Portgas D. Ace", but his mom wanted him to be Gol D. Ace. That's an opportunity to bring him back right there.
So... no new chapter this week?
>>7057 Golden week.
oh, hellooooo
>>7058
I'm sure Moria isn't dead. We didn't see him die and his death would not have any big impact. But I can see him return as Luffy's ally.
>>7075 Luffy's ally? Please. Where Crocodile seems to have developed a grudging respect of Luffy, Moria is ALL OF MY LOATHING AND HATE. Remember, he was humiliated by Luffy and lost everything. Crocodile could handle getting his shit kicked in by Luffy. He's a tough, suave, intelligent, glorious bastard. He'd lost his dream, and then ended up scheming for years to succeed at his new one. After failing at that, he simply didn't give a fuck anymore. Sure, he was pissed, but he got over that shit. He's fucking Sir Crocodile. He doesn't do petty vengeance and complaining. Moria however... he's just plain batshit crazy and pathetic. He lost his crew and decided to conquer the world with Zombies? Dude turned into a lazy fatass who had to steal others strength just to get by.
>>7108 I like how the various permutations of "he's Sir fucking Crocodile" have become a mini-meme of their own.
Would you say that Miss All Sunday signaled the beginning or Oda's recovery from Bruce Timm's Disease? Before her, all of the female characters looked pretty similar (especially their faces) with the exception of comically ugly ones like Alvida. However, from the Alabasta arc onward, it seems like there were a lot more visually distinct women being introduced.
>>7111 >beginning of Oda's recovery fix'd
>>7111 It was the beginning of it, but it took a really long time for him to get over it when it comes to faces (and he still has quite a while to go when it comes to the majority of body types). Robin was a special case: he put a lot more effort into making her distinctive because he knew from her introduction that she would be a permanent cast member.
>>7113 Yeah. He's made great progress on faces but how about a flat chested woman, Oda? Or even one with B cups? Hell, C cups.
>>7115 Well, at least their body structure is more varied these days.
>>7340
>>7341
Shouldn't we have spoilers right now, or is Oda taking another break?
>>7427 You mean you missed that whole thing about how Shueisha was making a fuss about scanlators a while back. The whole schedule has been a mess, but there will be a chapter this week. The thing: To all our readers There are now many people unjustly posting copies of manga on the internet. These unjust copies are inconsistent with mangakas' feelings. They are also distorting the authors' intentions of "I want the work to be read this way". The actions of posting these unjust copies on the net, into which the mangakas have poured their hearts, are not only hurting mangakas in real life but are also against the law, even if done in a light-hearted manner. Every time we discover such "unjust copies", we talk to the mangaka and consider every possible countermeasure. But the number of inconsiderate people is great, and at present we cannot deal with all of them. We have a request for all our readers. The unjust internet copies are deeply hurting the manga culture, mangakas' rights, and even mangakas' souls. Please understand once again that all of that is against the law. Also, the mangakas and Shueisha will severely deal with any unjust copies found on the internet. We ask that our readers please continue to support us. ~Weekly Shounen Jump editorial department
>>7428 I haven't seen that either... And man does it suck that sometimes the only way to read this stuff without fear of censorship or slow progression is technically illegal Where are the official American releases now? I know that Funimation is putting out the awesome by making subs of the latest episodes.
>>7429 You know, I'd read it legally if not for the fact that I don't trust Viz not to change stuff. And while scanslators might be hurting mangaka feelings, couldn't the same be said of official licencers that are also altering their work? In fact, aren't the latter groups worse since they're altering that work for profit that the mangaka never reaps? It'd be nice if some sort of response could be given to Shueisha along those lines.
>>7428 >>7429 >>7430 Just FYI, guys, that was about Japanese pirates, not scanlations. It did affect scanlations, though, because a major raw provider freaked out and shut down because like 95% of their traffic was from Japan. North America is a peanuts market compared with Japan, they don't honestly give a shit about us. >>7429 The American releases are...current, I think, or will be shortly. THis year they're releasing like five volumes a month to get caught up, and in the north american Shonen Jump magazine they're currently breaking out of Impel Down, IIRC. >>7430 For what it's worth, Viz are WAY less shitty these days than they used to be. I can honestly say that I've been satisfied or at least not not enraged by everything recent of theirs I've purchased, especially when I compare it to, say, their old Flame of Recca volumes. I do wish they would follow Del Ray's example and provide translator notes, though, so we can see where they affected changes to dialogue as part of the localization (which is inevitable, especially in a pun-happy manga like One Piece).
>>7432 Do they still spell it Z-O-L-O?
>>7437 Sadly, yes. It's like my one gripe with their recent One Piece releases.
>>7438 >>7437 Even then that's probably more 4kids fault for making that his "official" name.
>>7440 Yeah, it totally is, IIRC Viz USED to use Zoro before 4kids hassled them into changing. I guess they didn't want to change twice.
>>7432 >The American releases are...current, I think, or will be shortly. THis year they're releasing like five volumes a month to get caught up I was at a book store, and they had most of Thriller Bark done and a poster say they would be starting Sabaody this month.
I miss Monday spoilers already.
>>7572 Now it's just like old times! Spoilers appear right before the full chapter's out!
You are now realizing exactly why Buggy is so obsessed with doing everything in a flashy manner.
>>7575 Oh shit. If this were the case then Buggy's motives completely change.
After reading Batman: the Dark Knight Returns, I am just dying to see a future version of Usopp modeled after the comic's depiction of Green Arrow: balding, bearded, ill-tempered, and a top-notch sharpshooter despite his missing arm. This is the best picture I could find of him.
>>7598 Well, I'm pretty sure he's gonna blow his hand off after all those Impact Dial attacks.
>>7598 How does he use his bow?
>>7601 With his teeth. It's pretty badass.
I'm generally not a fan of the anime's take on the Impel down arc, but god damn those Whale Sharks look SO HAPPY!
Can someone explain to me why we have two threads for each chapter every week? It seems unnecessary.
>>7890 One is for the spoilers, and the other is for the released chapter. People are supposed to stop posting in the spoiler thread when the actual chapter is released, but they start conversations and don't feel like trying to move them to a different thread.
>>7891 Tbh I've thought about stopping posting spoilers when I see them myself, because lately they come out right before the chapter. It worked well when we'd get spoilers on late sunday evenings... but even if I don't post them someone else is bound to, so I figure whatever when I post. There was one week I tried to make the actual chapter discussion inside the spoiler thread a while ago, but that failed miserably because someone made a new thread anyway. Whatever happens happens. I'm kind of apathetic.
>>7891 Yeah, I got that part >>7893 Eh, I guess that makes sense.
Rereading the post-enies lobby arc made me think of a possible altverse story, in where one of Garp's cannonballs hit too close to Usopp before he could say he was sorry to the crew, and they had to leave without him. I can't decide if Usopp would have just decided to go with the giants to Elbaf, or he would've attempted to go after his old crew.

>>8051 I can dig it<3 >>8126 >>8128 The only thing I see off with the measurements are the waist. And still, barely an issue. I say this only 'cause if I were about a foot taller I could do a Hancock cosplay and be proportionately correct. >3>
I guess I'm just not that good at judging bra sizes by sight. My sense of scale is kinda off.
HA HA HA OH GOD, I think the Sanji we knew maybe gone forever.
>>8222 Sanji's Life Sucks: The Anime
>>8224 Though now that I think about it high heels seriously strengthen your ankles. So there's that.
>>8224 What do you mean 'sucks'? He's Opened his heart to his True Nature! We should rejoice for him!
>>8227 I figure one look at Nami will send him right back to old Sanji, though. On another note, first transformation and now feminization? Kamabakka kingdom more liek fetish fuel kingdom, amirite?
>>8228 He's not Nami-centric yknow. And I doubt it will be a total snapback in any case.
>>8229 Come on people, this one's easy, it's gonna be Hancock that snaps him back.
Next week: The Adventures of Fatsopp.
>>8231 Any sign of Zoro and Perona? I am desperate for their wacky hijinks.
>>8230 that's one of the reasons I hope Hancock hangs around a little after the crew gets back together.

>>8235 Awww more of cute little blonde girl. One Piece filler children are getting more adorable, I've noticed. Little Karakuri boy was cute too.
>>8235 Fuck yeah Revolutionaries. I liked Robin's last episode. It brought us this gem (pic related) Also, Morbidly obese Usopp
>>8238
Huh. ... Huh...
>>8244 I'll be in mah bunk.
>>8244 Well I just skewed my Kinsey scale.
>>8244 These two are now officially exes in my personal canon.
>>8244 Who is that? She looks like a female Kefka. o_O
>>8255 Balalaika from Black Lagoon.
More intriguing info from the SBS is finally being distributed: Apparently Ivankov's modeled after not just Frank N. Furter, but by sheer stroke of coincidence, his voice actor, Norio Imamura.
>Get haircut >Lament how I no longer look like Shuraiya, and it'll be over a year before I can look like Lucci again >... >Realize I totally look like Luffy
>>8257 I thought it wasn't a coincidence, but rather Imamura (who apparently does not normally do voice acting) auditioned for the part because he heard the character was based on him.
>>8263 Really? I'll have to reread it. Either way, Ivankov could not have had a better voice actor.
Oh Sanji no...
>>8278 "We've got to get out of this trap / Before this decadence saps our will / I've got to be strong and try to hang on / Or my mind may well snap / Und my life will be lived for the thrills..."
>>8276 My guess is they'll also add some sort of paddle system that goes outside the bubble to move around. And fake scuba gear on the face of the Thousand Sunny for aestethic purposes, like the chicken comb on the Going Merry was.
>>8278 If it wasn't for the chin scruff you could mistake him for a chick.
>>8283 Not the way he looked at the VERY end of the episode....but everyone wants to forget that.
