So what does /cog/ think of Persona 3?
I really love its soundtrack.
Never played it. How does the PSP version stand up?
>>88020PSP version seems to be considerably easier in several regards, and has a part of the game I enjoyed(overworld exploring) completely removed. It also has a few typos, and apparently even a couple of untranslated lines. But the general consensus is "It's Persona 3 on the go, I'll take twelve.">>88016Seconding.
I'm still busy with Peace Walker.
I picked up FES used and tried it, but it felt bogged down in a lot of bullshit. I did like the writing though. I probably shouldn't have tried to go for ALL the Social Links.
I prefer the SMT games to Persona, but both are good.
Persona is my cocaine....But I can't stop, they make me feel like I have friends... ;A;
I only played 4, but I did read that legendary LP of 3.Sad ending is sad.
Better storyline than 4 but more obnoxious characters. Infinitely more difficult than 4 except I heard that P3PSP is easymodo. Hrm. Still love the game and have an enormous crush on Aegis and the ending made me cry like a bitch. Just fountains of tears. Great big body shaking sobs, the whole deal. It was messy. But seriously SHUT UP FUUKA.
>>88045>Fuuka*GASP* THE ENEMY!
>>88069FUUKA, QUICK, TELL ME HOW MANY THERE ARE! I'M DYING TO KNOW!
>>88071THERE ARE FIVE ENEMIES, BUT THEY SEEM DISTRESSED! BE CAREFUUUL!Seriously though, I'm seconding the Aigis-crush.
>Aegis>The bestOH U SILLY PEOPLE
>Implying these aren't the best waifus.
>>88077You posted the wrong picture.
>>88069
Been debating giving it a shot myself, but I lose patience with turn-based battle systems easily and I hear the final boss takes 2 hours to beat.
>>88079AIGIS IS BEST WAIFU EVER GODDAMN.
>>88077Chihiro is kind of creepy. She totally has a wet dream about you.>>88080Hnnng Elizabeth. A narrow second. After Aigis.
>>88080Elizabeth struck me as a bit mental, but then again I never DID do all her date sidequests so I dunno.
Robot girls have always been my secret weakness.
P3 is infinite sadness if you contemplate the plot longer then you should, P4 is like some ray of sun shine that came out of nowhere in a SMT game and the best thing about it is it’s a happy ending well earned.
>>88038They are the same series.
>>88079>>Rise>>bestNO.>>Infinitely more difficult than 4 except I heard that P3PSP is easymodo. If P3P is easier, it's probably because they give you complete control of your party...
>>88107Fuck no. Naoto would be better if she had some time to actually be in the damn game and hang out with the rest of the crew, but she comes around so much later that you barely get a chance to know her. I've never played through her S.Link ever because I never have any goddamn time to do it. She joins the party and almost immediately after, shit gets real. She's cool, but I was never as attached to her as everyone else.Plus, she is Miss fucking Exposition. God fucking damn. The game is wordy enough as it is.
>>88108 Don't you hate on my reverse trap detective girl. Without her exposition would fall in big random gaps in the story that they would stumble around thinking they figured something out without thinking about how this fits in the case. Those kids pretty much ran into the TV grasping at straws without pinning the MO on anyone before Naoto.
>>88110I don't hate Naoto! Like I said, we don't get enough TIME with Naoto to really learn to like her. She only gets to "hang out" with the group once or twice, I believe. I wish she had been introduced to hanging out with the Scoobies sooner. And her S.Link becomes available way, WAY too late in the game AND you have to have max'd courage to start said S.Link. It's just not enough time, gamewise, to really form a solid opinion on her.But seriously I love reverse traps and I think she's cute as a motherfucker, so it's not like I dislike her. (But seriously, I know her exposition is important but ho-lee-shit. So much talking goddamn especially right there at the ass end of the game. This is why I hate silent Protagonists. Just listening to, basically, one person talk AT LENGTH is so frustrating sometimes. ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE IS SAYING SHIT I ALREADY FIGURED OUT ARRRRGH)Pic semi-related. It makes me want a P4 anime so hard I could die.
>>88120But P4 is already an anime, it just has grinding elements.
>>88122oh u
>>88108Usually, you get Naoto maxed in the second playthrough, when you have every stat at five.
>>88120And now you know that each waifu has their own strengths and weaknesses....BUT RISE IS THE BEST
Also, this comic is why I am terrified to actually play P3. I don't trust you, AI...
>>88163Which is why they implemented controllable allies for P4 and P3P.
If Persona 5 deals with Persona-weilding gangsters, then my JoJo theory will be validated.
>>88196 There are rumors that the main character for 5 will be a hikikomori or something, personally I don't care as long as they mix up the beginning with the MC not being a transfer student but just someone no one noticed and the promotional images have the characters extend their hands. But Gangsters have always been in persona though, what the hell do you think the Nanjo group or Kirijo company were? “Legitimate businessmen”?
>>88163It's really just Mitsuru who is a FUCKING IDIOT AJKGNJKAGJK.Funny, because she claims to fight strategically, and is renowned for being some sort of genius.Meanwhile, Junpei, the slapstick idiot, can always be counted on to back you up in battle, and use just the right moves at just the right time.Except for his tendency to use Giant Fist on the Reaper. That move has like 30% accuracy, Junpei. Brave Blade plz.
>>88163>Final Boss>Charms Yukari>Yukari uses Diahran on boss, healing every last bit of his healthALL MY HATE
>>88163I always did well with the NPC's, though from what I hear, I was the exception.>>88199Personally, I don't care so long as I get a gay option. No, matter how many homoerotic undertones Yosuke's S.Link had, it isn't the same.
>>88236Same has happened to me, but I don't think I'm that far enough in the game yet, so it might be because they don't have enough options to fuck up yet.
>>88120What they should've done was flipped Naoto's and Kubo's dungeons.
So my laptop is on the fritz, meaning all I have to do until some holds come in at the library is try Persona 3 and Devil May Cry again. Picking up Persona 3, I find myself having a LOT more fun now that I'm not trying to go for all the social links. Also I met the monk, who is awesome.
Did anyone else laugh when they found out the Hermit Social link was an MMO?
>>88308A Persona 2 MMO no less.
>>88308 A mostly dead P2 MMO if I remember the setting right. I was more surprised to learn how much of a booze hound the teacher was. I mean I know public education is hell but I guess this explains why she only teaches homeroom.
Here's an upgraded version of Fuuka.DO YOU RIKE IT?
>>88319 Not really.
>>88308I certainly did.But then, if you know what each Arcana represents, it makes sense and then it only kinda looks like they're going for a pun.(also, there's not enough Ms. Toriumi 34. And by not enough, I mean I don't think there's any)
>>88327I've yet to meet Aegis, but so far Chihiro, Toriumi, and Elizabeth are my favorites. Actually, playing this makes me wonder if there's any SMT Penny Arcade comics.
>>88337Just this one, I think.
So I just beat Hermit, but the main plot has fuck all to do with what I'm about to bitch about:The lack of real options never used to bother me with JRPGs. It kept things on a focused storyline, and I was fine with that. But now, as I'm doing some of these Social Links, I find these places where I'm going "oh, looks like the creators forgot to add that dialogue option here, must have been an oversight."For example:Chihiro takes Protag to the bookstore, and she finds this 3 Volume set she wants. She talks about how she'd have to save until graduation to meet the 18,000 yen prince, and how much she wants it. After that she comments on this businessman and his gold-digger, then the social link rises and runs off.During all this, Protag is hauling around about 500,000 yen and often finds briefcases of 40,000 and up. I just find myself going "okay game, give me the optinon to buy them" but it never happens. Similarly, you never get the option to confront or comment on the teacher being your MMO partner, even when she tells Protag's character that she is trying to seduce Protag himself. I think part of my problem is that Protag is just a brick wall. He very rarely says anything of note, and when he does get the choice for a line that would actually imply personality, said line is usually just a dick option that seems like it would lock you out of content. I guess I just think it would be better with A: a more WRPGish dialogue systemor, since it's a JRPG,B: AN ACTUAL FUCKING CHARACTER FOR A PROTAGONIST...Sheesh, if I'm reacting this badly over Persona, I think I'm going to go nuts when Golden Sun DS finally comes out and we literally have nothing but inconsequential yes/no options for whatever silent protagonist Earth Adept they march out.
>>88484I might actually die if someone made a Persona game with a few more western elements. Silent protags stopped being fun aaaaages ago. Give us some sort of personality or let us make our own goddamn.
>>88484>Similarly, you never get the option to confront or comment on the teacher being your MMO partner, even when she tells Protag's character that she is trying to seduce Protag himself. Patience, child, patience.
>>88487Well I did the whole Social Link. Unless you mean that they actually integrate that into the storyline, in which case I've underestimated Atlus, because so far they Social Links seem entirely removed from the storyline. They do however, give me the impression that, if Protag DID have a personality, it'd be of a snide playboy who manipulates people for food, sex, and crazy Persona powers.
>>88489They actually integrate every social link into the storyline.Don't worry about it, everyone underestimates Atlus. And I agree about MC's personality, it kinda bugs me how he's such a manwhore.
>>88490...I honestly can't imagine how most of those would fit into the storyline (aside of Death and Fool of course). I've been spoiled for most of it this include who Pharos is, that the Chairmen is a villain, what the relationship between Shinji and Ken is and how it ends, what Aigis did to Protag, what happens to the Strega members, and a fair bit about The Answer, but I guess I'll see.Really, the businessman alone would be worth it to see. I don't like him (and how could anyone really), but damn if he isn't the funniest thing in the game so far.
I'm giving this game a shot. Is there anything major I should know before making any real progress? I've kinda fucked up already a few times with that student asking me questions the teacher asks him and giving him the wrong answers, but figure I can make it up later or something.
>>88502Finish all the dungeons as soon as possible so you can spend plenty of time leveling up your S. Links.
>>88486 If they tried to give him a personality they might as well let you choose and shape your "main" persona. The point of making him devoid of any traits before the game is to allow the player a better sense of making some all experienced messiah out of some random teenager. I don't know if it would work if you took out the slient MC.
>>88512Suddenly, MASS EFFECT WITH DEMONS AND TEENAGERS.
>>88502The only thing you are losing with those exchanges is an opportunity to level your charm. Social Links are something else entirely.
So yeah I played Persona 3 FES the incorrect way when I first tried it. Trying to balance out all the Social Links instead of just going for whoever I liked was just a road to madness.
>>88513i would play the FUCK out of that you have no fucking clue. it is all i would play from now until the day i died.
>>88600And the sad part is... so would I. ;A;
>>88513SOMEONE DRAW GARRUS SUMMONING HIS PERSONA
>>88614 That's why it wouldn't work. No one would want to play anything else Altus makes. Death from success is far more painful than of failure.
So guys I just got Persona 4 a few days back and I'm up to Yukiko's Shadow. Are there any interesting side quests, Social Links, or even some general tips? I've never really been too good at JRPGs that aren't Nintendo related.
>>88635 The best time to grind is on rainy days. If you don't have anything for the fox that's the only thing you can do besides study or waste money.
>>88625Here you go.
Someone explain the appeal of Yukari to me. She's pretty bitchy.
>>88666She's a healer.
>>88666Nice 666, dude.As for Yukari? She stops being bitchy eventually. It's all about getting to know the cast. They're pretty obnoxious stereotypical characters during the game's plot, but their personality and stuff really shines during their S.Links. well, the girls anyways. I haven't had a chance to play P3P so i don't know about the guys.
>>88666Like other bros said, she gets less bitchy. Less bitchy Yukari is my...third favorite female. But the top 2 are Aigis and Elizabeth, who share ALL OF MY LOVE, so third place is still pretty damned impressive.
Is the series still considered an experiment between Philemon and Nyarlathotep in 3 and 4? The continued presence of the butterfly motif, Igor, and the Velvet room leads me to believe that Philemon is still around I guess, but we've not seen Nyarlathotep since Persona 2.
>>88666 Persona 3 is a game where everyone hates each other for a number of reasons. Without the MC dating and keeping them together SEES would probably kill each...oh wait never mind. >>88686 Philemon is referenced only as his signature butterfly that you save with but I'm hoping 5's plot centers on the absence of one while the other is around particularly Nyarlathotep waking up without his opposite and freaking out. Each of their actions has to counterbalance the other if I remember the original 3 games right so I'm thinking a Lucifer without a God.
>>88712I'm actually kind of curious as to what their relationship to Nyx and Izanami is, or how they measure up to them. That, or I'd like a crossover between the main SMT series and the Persona series.Nyarlathotep, God, and Lucifer trying to out-bastard each other would be glorious. And then Philemon wins just because the Protagonists bulldoze the others while he has the sense to sit things out.
>Protag literally sells himself to Elizabeth for a Persona
>No one will ever be able to make a cute Fuuka>;_;
>>88730That's because Fuuka isn't cute to begin with.
I TOLD YOU ABOUT TARTARUS MAN
>Beating down The ReaperAlso I've pretty much finished all the Social Links and shit that I actually care about. All that's left is Aigis and screwing around with Mamoru, other than that I'm pretty much set to fight Nyx and finish The Journey.
So I was about to do a bit of extra grinding in Tartarus when suddenly:>Well I put the endgame armor on everyone, time for some->Oh hey, how long has that door been behind the stairs?>Oh, a bonus dungeon. Well at this stage I should->OH GOD I WAS SO WRONG FUCK WHY ARE THE SNAKES RAPING ME
Look, goddammit, Atlus. Just make P4PSP already and get on with it. I want to be in a loveless relationship predicated on lies with Adachi and i want to make horribly inappropriate passes at Hunkle Dojima. Or just PRETEND I am making passes at him. I would like to fuck Daisuke if you don't mind kthnx. But seriously I would actually kill every last one of you for an Adachi S.Link
>>88863EVERYLASTONE OF YOU.
>>88782>>88832What the fuck? Am I tripfagging in my sleep or something? That's exactly what's going on in my current playthrough...Did you use cheap tricks on the Reaper or best him in the ring of honor?
>>88883Considering I don't know any cheap tricks, all I could do was keep hitting him until he died. By far the hardest fight in the game for me.ANYWAY, I've officially finished the Journey, so it's time for a long fucking wall of reactions, nitpicks, and other crap.First off, on the final boss:I've been listening to Battle For Everyone's Souls since before I really even knew exactly what Persona was about. It's SO FUCKING GLORIOUS to actually fight the battle it comes from, even ifbecause of said battle is really long and involves the fusion of your own True Arcana and an Eldritch Abomination blathering on about the Arcana. That said: fuck how Nyx likes to raise that Moon veil every other turn. It's like I'm fighting Vayne in FF12 and he would raise that invincibility barrier for 10 minutes at a time because my party was 3 times his level. ...Okay so maybe it wasn't THAT bad. Otherwise, pretty straightforward fight. I was severely over-leveled due to fucking around in the Bonus Dungeon (I beat the Reaper before I even noticed said dungeon existed though). Also, Social Link endings!>Tower>Star>MagicianBoth pretty straightforward, not much to say.>Strength>JusticeBoth pretty much act like they did in the 10th Level. Fair enough.>Hanged ManHe Mad.>Moon>DevilShine on your crazy fucking diamonds. Especially President Tanaka. He seems to have risen to the level of "Walking Coolface.">SunYou know, I didn't think anything in Persona 3 was going to be more depressing than the Sun Social Link. Apparently I hadn't considered that the ending would be talking to his mother. ;_;>HermitTHIS IS THE BEST SCENE IN THE GAME. Other than that: Death, Judgment, Fool, and Aeon already have the main storyline.I never finished Chariot, Emperor, or Fortune. I will NEVER finish Temperance because I LOATHE Bebe's English/Japanese/French mashup. Yes, I know it's a necessary evil, but it's also one I'm allowed to avoid. I didn't ever actually start Empress or Priestess. I've no idea who Lovers is, so I'm just going to say Issac and Miria are in this game because that amuses me. My only real complaint I hate that Protag is mostly silent. Either make him a character, or let me roleplay. I do admit that they did eventually take care of most of my initial complaints about this though. Other than that, the Persona Fusion could use some streamlining here and there so that it doesn't require a goddamn encyclopedia and a shitload of cash to figure out the right fusions and more time could be used for Social Links so that scheduling is less insane. Oh and I wish I could have the option control my part directly. I like that it tries to make you feel like part of a team instead of a puppet master, but considering that you spend the game manipulating the lives of people to increase your wealth and Persona power, all it really does is make you feel like a different KIND of puppet master. Also sometimes the AI just plain does stupid shit (but less often than AI usually does).Other than that, it's just Protag sleeping in Aigis' lap... well apparently that's how the original Persona 3 ended, and then The Answer just [spoiler]kills him[spoiler]. That, plus general negative reaction to it, makes me wonder if I really want to spend the 30 hours on The Answer.
>>88902All your complaints are fixed in P4. And no, you shouldn't play The Answer, it really does RUIN Persona 3.
>>88902PLAY PERSONA 4 YOU RATFUCKERAlso:>Isaac and Miria>the Lovers...fucking awesome.
>>88905Funny story: I actually considered handpainting a set of Baccano tarot cards once. Never did get around to doing that.
>>88904>>88905Well to be honest, if I were to pick up another Persona game right now (I'm not, I have to finish other games and finally read AND ANOTHER THING), then I would pick up both Persona 2 titles. Persona 1 is not really worth bothering with, or so I'm told.
>>88906Why you gotta be such a ballbuster?
>>88902Lovers is Yukari.
I'm curious: since there's no way I'll be playing the P4 game anytime soon, is the manga an acceptable substitute?
>>88914 No, but the Hiimdaisy comic is.A shame that it's never going to be finished.
>>88966Oh ye of little faith.
>>88967 The last time she put out anything was what, April? And that was just Miles Edgeworth.
>>88970And? She never updates regularly.
I need my MGS4 comics badly.
P1/P2: Lovecraft MythosP3: Greek Mythos (sort of)P4: Japanese MythosP5: Hopefully Norse or Celtic Mythology, and maybe tie up the overarching story arc.
