Okay, so I've got some questions about the Avatar, and I'd like to hear what you peeps think.First is the question of progeny. While our knowledge about Avatars past is very limited, there is some information provided about Avatar Roku and his descendants. Take Zuko for instance; as a direct descendant of a previous Avatar, he seems to play a crucial role in his interaction with Aang. The same may even be said of Azula. Do you think the progeny of Avatars past are all connected to the Avatars reincarnate? Also, regarding the spirit forms of Avatars past. Is the form decided by how the Avatar looked at their time of death, when a new Avatar was born? If so, Roku looks relatively a lot more aged than Kiyoshi and several previous Avatars. Make's you wonder why they were struck down in their "prime" so to speak.I guess ITT: "Avatar" General
>Is the form decided by how the Avatar looked at their time of death, when a new Avatar was born? No, Kyoshi lived to be 200-some years old, I think it's possibly either a personal preference, or whatever the creators thought looked cool.
Wow, I just checked, and you're right! In the Avatar Day episode, Chin the Great was killed 370 years ago! -100 years of Aang being frozen -100 years of Roku's (expected) age, +/- 20 years... Kiyoshi was 150 - 190 years old when she took on Chin! And still a looker, might I add... *rawr*
>>77378? You mean she lived 150-190 years after she killed Chin, right?Which, given she lived to be 230, makers her 40-80 years old when she killed chin.
>And still a looker, might I add...The paints probably helped a little.
>>77381Err, yeah... math fail on my part...By the way, due to her lifespan, Kiyoshi lived through at least two of Sozen's Comets. Of course, this was before they were actually deemed as Sozen's Comet.
>>77385It doesn't make sense for Sozin's comet to actually be such a consistent reoccurring element. Surely Firebenders prior would have tried to take advantage of it.Unless the presence of the Avatar really WAS a true deterent.
>>77394I may be putting words in Iroh's mouth. He said in the Finale: "Only once every hundred years can a Firebender experience this kind of power" *inhale - exhale* I assumed he was referring to the comet. If not, what else could he mean?
>>77394Nah, it's pretty much set in stone that the comet comes once a century. My guess is that Fire Lords like Sozin probably weren't quite so common. After all, how many Fire Lords have the Avatar himself as a trusted comrade and brother? He probablly saw this as part of his destiny, and it was only one small portion of his ambition. Plus, the Fire Nation was particularly prosperous at the time. It was probablly a combination of factors that led Sozin to his war. For all we know, the comet was a centennial symbol of life for people of the Fire Nation and Sozin decided to screw that up.As for how much of a deterrent the Avatar was, it kinda depends:Avatar Yangchen was totally dedicated to justice and the balance, and did anything neccesary, so much so that for the next two-hundred years after her death, the nations did not dare go to war out of fear and respect for her memory.Avatar Kuruk, riding on his previous incarnation's coattails, just spent all his time surfing and being kind of a dick (then his wife's face got stolen just as he married her for it, a la "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." *Thanks* Yangchen.)Kyoshi was kinda more militant, it seems. But didn't outright meddle in things, it seems she was kinda middle-ground. She didn't seek out Chin, but faced him when his armies came, and only formed the Dai Li as a compromise between a tyranical Earth King and his revolting populace.Roku's hard to say, we don't hear much of his work as an Avatar, but he found time for a family in addition to keeping tabs on the Fire Naiton's encroachment of the Earth Kingdom.
>>77400It's sad to know that of the 4 previous Avatars, only the males (knowingly) were wed, and only Roku (knowingly) had descendants. But in my opinion, Kuruk has the right idea for coping with his loss...Surf's Up!
>>77400>Avatar Kuruk, riding on his previous incarnation's coattails, just spent all his time surfing and being kind of a dickKoh was even more of a dick for stealing Ummi's face than Kuruk was for just slacking off. I mean, it was peacetime. Maybe some of the things he did like showing off and challenging random people to an Agni Kai was bad, but I don't think it was justified for Koh to punish him, especially by taking his wife. That never sat right with me.>>77402>only the males (knowingly) were wedThat's because Kyoshi was a lesbian. Not sure about Yangchen.
>>77404Wait, I thought Kyoshi had a daughter? And she started the tradition of the kyoshi warriors?Did the Avatar Wiki lie to me again? :/
the comet was not enough to win the war. it's just that the earth kingdom was in the process of breaking apart into weaker city states up around that point (who knows, maybe at the beginning some were on his side)and Sozin saw an opportunity to catch them while they're weak.second guess is that the comet's affect was weakened by the existence of other extremely powerful fire bending creatures who shifted the fire - chi energy of the planet in different ways. Creatures whose numbers Sozin tried to reduce as fast as he could before the comet arrives in order to strengthen his army.
>>77414Artificial insemination. She invented it in the Avatarverse.
>>77415>>second guess is that the comet's affect was weakened by the existence of other extremely powerful fire bending creatures who shifted the fire - chi energy of the planet in different ways. Creatures whose numbers Sozin tried to reduce as fast as he could before the comet arrives in order to strengthen his army.Makes sense to me.
Well since we're playing the speculation game, has anyone else here ever considered the possibility that Iroh and Ozai don't have the same mother?
>>77437At his funeral, Azulon only has one wife, Ilah, whom had already passed away. So, nope.
Regarding the comet, is it canonical that it approach Avatar Earth before Sozin's time? IRL the astronomically vast majority of comets are confined to the Oort cloud (i.e. the really, really distant reaches of the solar system) unless their orbit is perturbed by another body. This happens occasionally, and we get a new comet. In the world of Avatar, we know that astronomical events are closely tied to spirit activities, so maybe Sozin's Comet is the physical embodiment of some action taking place in the spirit world. Maybe something to do with Kuruk's wife, or Kyoshi's actions in severing Kyoshi island from the mainland. Or maybe something to do with the Avatar preceding Yangchen?
I've read fanfics where the next Avatar after Aang is one of his descendants (with Katara, of course). Not too novel to "keep it within the family), but it wasn't even considered in canon.

Hahaha, go look at the Avatar page on ED. Which one of you did that? And does anyone know the sauce on the MaiLee pic?http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Avatar_the_Last_Airbender
