In lieu of all the movie's racefail wank, I thought I'd bring up something I haven't seen anyone else discussing. As anyone who is familiar with my Avatar fanart probably knows, I'm pretty big on the Dangerous Ladies. When it was announced that Zuko was going to be Indian, my first though was "Oh man. Indian!Azula." And most of the Fire Nation will be, too.

For some reason, the thought of the Dangerous Ladies being Indian pleases me- I love their original designs, of course, but I'm also a big fan of Indian women's fashion and design. It's possibly the only thing I'm looking forward to with the movie trilogy. Not to mention that the addition of three badass ladies of color might make up for losing Katara. (As far as I'm concerned, she's not in the movie.) Thoughts?

Wow, that's brilliant!

I'm of Indian heritage myself, and I agree, it's going to be cool if they inject more Indian influeneces into the Fire Nation, even if it does mess with the Avatar Universe.

I love Ty Lee's look. Not all Indians are that shade of brown, Mai could still look like her pale self, but I love her hair. <3 For her, you could make her wear a long peshwas, which is like a long, loose fitted dress that has fitted pants underneath.

I... wow. I have no problem with this. In fact, just the opposite.

You know, I was never all that upset at the idea of an Indo-Iranian Fire Nation. It's definitely a change from the series, but culturally, it makes a lot of sense, with Agni being an Indian goddess and with the pre-Islamic faith of the Iranian peoples being Zoroastrianism.

If nothing else, if done well, it would make a really neat contrast with the explicitly East Asian Earth Kingdom.

Also, I always love your art and this one is no exception.

No.76731
That's really cool, Yamino! I only just noticed the henna on Ty Lee's hands. There's always a lot of interesting color and patterning in Indian clothing -- we enjoyed looking through some of it when making a little alternate Indian!Irah costume for Gaang Jr: >>75126

I also like the nose piercing that Azula has -- it really seems to fit her design.

No.76732
Thanks for the positive comments, guys!

>>76727 Nice suggestion with the peshwa. If I draw them again, I'll try that instead. You might be able to tell I was kinda wingin' it with her outfit. XD She ended up looking more like Queen Amidala, lol. And yes, I know not all Indina girls are that dark, but I guess I wanted to try giving her a darker skin, just for contrast to her original design. <3

>>76730 I never thought about it, but that's a really good point about Agni!

>>76731 I agree, my favorite things about Indian fashion are the gaudy details and colors. They're so... delicious and shiny. <3 I really like the details on that drawing you linked to.

The movie will likely not have designs this interesting (what with things like Cliff Curtis's Grecco-Roman Chinese Samurai Olive Garden armor) but at least we have cool drawings like this.

A fantasy Indian nation would have been pretty kickass, I just can't shake the notion that M. Night isn't going to do it well (nor can I shake the notion that if we were gonna see it, I'd have much preferred a different franchise to host it, rather than this one.)

Also, Mai looks awesome.

No.76751
One or the things I really like about this, is that Azula still has her "claw" nails. It's one of those things that a lot of artists seems to ignore. Though, to be honest, even the series itself seems to have forgotten about them after season two.

No.76752
>>76726

This stirs in me an intense desire to witness Azula leading off a fire-weaving Bollywood dance routine.

If that happens, M Night, all is forgiven...

Seconding the Agni/Zoroastar sense this cultural troping makes, combining in one warfaring nation-state the two ancient civilisations who both claim to have invented chess (oh, the arguments I've heard...). The production's been so culturally autistic up to now I heavily doubt it will happen, but bt the very least it would counterbalance the 'Prince of Persia' movie having no god damn Persians in it.

This is a lovely piece of art, but it still doesn't sit right with me. If you had left the movie out of it, if this were just another AU fantasy, then I wouldn't care as much. And let's face it, from the way they appear to be wussifying Katara, the main female protagonist of the show, I don't hold much hope for Ozai's Angels, should they get that far. If one badass female fighter is too much for them to take, there's no way they'll do these three justice, they'll probably decide to make them generic catty meeean grrls if they aren't ignored altogether.

If they really wanted to give Indians more prominence in the Avatar world, they should have left the other cultures alone and done something with Guru Pathik and his background. I would have been okay with that, might have even been interesting depending on how they presented it. Call me a wet blanket if you will, but I can't find a single redeeming feature about this film. Not even pretty Indian art and fashion.

What? Okay, I can let it pass that Azula in the animated series is passable for 15ish, but how am I supposed to be attracted to a friggin preteen? They gotta pick some angsty girl to play Azula, and as far as I'm concerned (coming from Indian heritage) Indian females, especially preteens are NOTHING like the cartoon depicted Azula. Guh, hopefully whomever they pick will be legal by the time the Third Book is finished. *hurp* I think I'm gonna be sick...

Of course, film!Sokka is way older than show!Sokka, but I'm glad that at the very least Azula's casting is trying to work within the actual age range rather than doing what Hollywood always does (e.g. every "high school" film being made up of 20-somethings).

Actually, Azula was one of the characters I was hoping they'd cast a little older. Not Jackson Rathbone older, but like 16-18ish. As one of the principle villains, she really needs to look and feel dangerous. Having her cast slightly older than the heroes would help accomplish that. They even did that in the show. The Gaang was all voiced by kids and teens, while Zuko and the Dangerous Ladies were all voiced by adults.

Also, Yamino, I love these designs. An Indian Fire Nation would actually be pretty cool. It wouldn't be accurate, but it would still fit in with the general world building of the original show.

If they made it so that basically Air = Tibet, Water = Inuit/Sub-arctic people, Fire = India/South Asia, and Earth = China/East Asia, I don't think the fandom would have too much of a problem with it outside of some initial bitching.

Is it wrong for me to imagine her saying this in a Desi accent?

Not wrong, but it's certainly adorable.

Did you guys know that Indian/alternate culture is the prompt this month for the Tyzula group on DA? =) You can blame me for that. xD

Holey carp! I thought I recognized this song... My friends made me watch this movie a few years ago. I was resistant but it turned out to be pretty fun.

More on topic, now there needs to be large dance numbers like that one in the book 2 movie. I'm not sure where to fit them, but it must be done...

They can give Azula a classic Disney-style villain song, but with a Bollywood twist!

No.77641
>>77613 I have ideas for how they could translate the Beach episode to an Indian setting.

I see Indian!Ty Lee as being more of a dancer/entertainer than a contortionist, but I imagine she'd still be acrobatic. Just more in a dancer kind of way.

Ok, I have to ask, because my curiosity is killing me, and even if I *wanted* to pay to see this movie (which I don't) it's not even out here in Belgium yet.

...Is movie Azula anything like my design? O_O

Okay, don't quote me on any of this. They showed her very briefly, and I don't know how well I'm remembering.

Similarly to the first season of the show, they didn't show a lot of her in the movie. When they did show her in a brief scene at the end, half of it was a shot of her from behind, and the other half was a face shot, so we really didn't see a lot of her clothing. She seemed to have kind of like a black sheer veil on, though.

As for her ACTUAL appearance? Yes, very much so. The actress looked a lot darker than she did in the photos that surfaced of her here -- like her skintone wasn't as pale, it was closer to how you've been coloring her. Her hair was down, and kind of messy from what I remember, and she had the red lips she had in the series. But otherwise I actually thought she looked very similar to your art. You called it!

No.80745
>>80744
Woah, hang about.

You can't say that the hair was different, the clothes were different, the make up was different, then go on to say it looks just like a design you just listed all the major differences for.

No.80746
>>80745
Sure I can. What tiny bit of her outfit that showed was a little different, sure. But her face (features, I mean), coloring, and actual physical appearance were the same as Yamino's design. If that makes sense at all, I'm probably just not being very clear.

No.80747
>>80746
Also, keep in mind that what she wears in that scene might just be some formal garb, and she'll wear something different when she actually gets out and does stuff in the second movie. (If it even gets made, but that's an off topic debate for another thread.) So there's a high chance she could still fully resemble Yamino's design, later.

Shite. They could've at least been more subtle with the joy, there.
Also, somebody demote the director of photography. A mid-close up is fine to show both Iroh and Azula in that scene. Similar to how it was shot in the programme.

The Fire Nation in the movie is Indian, so Yamino drew Indian Azula and friends.

...That's explained in the OP, kinda seems like you're just being an ass.
Of course, you might also be trollin', I dunno, my troll-sense vanishes when I'm tired.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mai or Ty Lee get removed from a sequel. Especially Ty Lee as she isn't dark and edgy enough, in Shyamalan's "vision" of what Avatar should be. I imagine his Azula would just be reprising Zhao's failure and she wouldn't have lighting bending unless there's a storm, so she has a source to bend.

Sorry, but... Isn't she like a complete firebending prodigy/master in a way? And can't the master firebenders in the Shyamaverse generate their own fire? And shouldn't it be the same case with Azula?

I don't know myself. Just checking with you guys.

IMO they look better asian.
It matches more with canon, and it means we won't have to do the whole racebending shit again.
