Dude... there's just no comparison. The key is in the difference in titles. "Charlie and" was the story about Charlie, the kid, and how wonderous the Chocolate Factory was to his child's eyes. "Willy Wonka and" was about him — or more exactly, Johnny Depp — and his wacky... err... Depp-ness. Oh, there's no doubt that Gene Wilder in the original movie was a powerful character (and weird in a different sense), but they were careful to not let HIM overpower the real main character: Charlie.
But honestly, the original movie is a freaking CLASSIC, and probably better than the book. You should definately take some time to watch it, at least once.
(Oh, and James and The Giant Peach...? That. Movie. Never. Happened.)
