Holy crap, I am loving the Arya sideplot. It's one of the better liberties to the book this season's been taking. But on the flipside I think the Talisa subplot is one of the weakest additions. The romance feels extremely forced and out-of-place, not to mention it's full of OOC bits like Robb helping treat a Lannister footman like that.
>> No. 32913
Oh God, that new episode was so great! Especially that scene with Arya and Sir Creepy McAlsoKindOfAttractive where she begs him to kill that dude.
>> No. 32917

In the book Arya actually kills the Tickler and some other folks herself, but apparently the show writers thought showing Maisie Williams killing people on screen would make the viewers lose sympathy for her. Boo...

But... that's kind of important. If she doesn't start killing people now, it's going to seem less plausible that she'd give up her identity to become an assassin...

Worst thing about the Talisa subplot is that it makes Robb come off as even more idiotic compared to what happened with Jeyne, especially since everyone is a lot older. Now when the Red Wedding happens it's going to feel a lot more like he had it coming than it did in the novels.

Comments from the producers about giving Robb a bigger role and such means it's probably going to get a lot more prominence in teh future, although I think I heard Tywin mention the Red Wedding already being planned this episode. I'm more bothered by the lack of Riverrun and the Tully family, since without them it just seems like Robb is wandering around aimlessly from battle to battle.

So I started watching the series last night and now I'm on episode 8. THIS FUCKING SHOW. HOLY SHIT. SO GOOD.

Tyrian is the best fucking character ever. He almost makes up for the rest of his shithead family, but not really, because the rest of them are horrible assholes.

I feel bad for Ned; he's a genuinely good, noble guy, but it looks like he just waltzed into what'll be his death. I'm trying my best to guess which of the Starks will live and which will die. I'm guessing most are in the "gonna die" category. Hopefully Ayria lives, because she's easily the best of the Stark kids.

Drogo's pretty boss, too. He's fucking crazy, but that's part of what makes him awesome. Again, I feel bad that he's probably gonna die so Daenerys can come back and take what's probably rightfully hers. Because she really doesn't seem to appreciate the fact that Drogo's people seemed to have a really sweet thing going on, which she would then have going on.

I am so fucking disappointed and angry at the TV show and the severe downturn it has gradually taken. The writers have made zero effort in even trying to humanize the characters. They have missed development after development, either no no obvious reason or to stuff in a few more scenes of titillation. I liked the Talisa thing, because by the time the abortion potion was brought up in the books, I didn't even care about Jeyne as a character. I'll admit though, it was done better in the books because the books had way less forshadowing an a ton of secondary characters that died along with Cat/Robb.

I'd like to also bring up that the Red Wedding isn't over yet, and there are more scenes coming next week. Also, the show writers will probably try to cheer people up by eliminating the Purple Wedding and condensing it to fit into next week's episode.

I just feel like one thing GRRM was really good at in the book was revealing a whole new dimension of a character/relationship/situation with a single line or action eg "I dreamed of you", "Once the sun sets not candle can replace it" and most importantly for me tonight was "Not my hair, Ned loves my hair". It takes so little to slip in a little line like that (or replace it with a similar one) but they seem to miss it every time, or try to go for some other grand gesture that feels hammy and awkward.

Season 1 was better, but that's pretty much what I expected given that Book 1 was released in fucking 1996 and I imagine that, as any good writer would, by the time 2011 rolled around, GRRM had shit he wanted to add or change (since my understanding is that the show creators run changes and additions by him). It's a very rough product in spots.

On the issue of titillation where HBO is concerned... I would say that the book is better in some ways and a lot worse in others. True, there were no overly long scenes spent in whorehouses in the book, but the Dany stuff was skeevy as shit, I was way more bothered by that than I was in the show.

Dude, I fucking love Strong Belwas but he would break the show thematically, when you have a show where a super strong warlord like Khal Drogo dies from an infection due to a single sword wound having a guy whose entire shtick is letting people get a slash in on him is a somewhat bad idea because it is at odds with the tone of the show which is decidedly more serious than the books, thus we have Dario looking much much more toned down.

Also the fact that Season 1 seemed a lot more loyal to the books in general. Season 2 was a lot more liberal, some of it to condense the story or occasionally fleshed out a character (Bron, Theon) but most of which seemed like they were just changing shit for the sake of it and missed the whole point of the characters or scenes (Talisa, Arya not going all Eren Jaeger on the Tickler, a lot of the Dany stuff). And a lot of it sets up things in such a problematic way that for Season 3 no matter how clever the changes to the book are this time around they still have to follow through on the idiotic stuff from the last season.

Remember that part where she was engaged to Joffrey? And that part where she grew up in a disgustingly patriarchal culture where your husband is basically God and going against him is, well, looked down upon, to be polite? Yeah. But yeah, I can't believe that a TWELVE YEAR OLD GIRL (idk if she was 11 or 13 or whatever, but it's DAMN YOUNG) wasn't savvy enough to figure out that these people didn't have her best interests in mind. I was saying that Season 1 was better than Book 1. I have no opinion on the other seasons as adaptations as I've not started book 2. As works of their own, it's hard to say, I can't say I've ever seen an episode of Game of Thrones I didn't like. Season 2 might be my favorite insofar as it is the most Tyrion heavy I guess.

Yup, this. The one that really irked me was Loras. He's supposed to be a short-tempered young knight but a capable and gallant one none the less, who was so deeply hurt by Renly's death (his childhood friend and lover) he commits himself eagerly to the Kingsguard so that he wouldn't have to be forced to marry. Shit, there's even a long conversation explicitly explaining his motivation eg "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it". On the TV, he's sad for about half and episode then eagerly jumps on the next dick who smiles at him without hesitation. I understand the show, being such a popular primetime 'Murkan series probably doesn't want too much homo but it's just sort of an indicator when a chivalrous haughty gallant knight is turned into a charmless floozy for the sake of two seconds of screen-ass and fulfilling the titillation quota. It's boring.

At least when Ned, his brother, Robb, and Jon act like complete morons, they do it for some kind of moral reason. Sansa is basically a less mean, less experienced Cersei, and her motives for all her dumb actions were pretty shallow.

Why wouldn't she have wanted to stay in King's Landing against her father's wishes, especially since she still believed Joffrey was a ~*golden prince*~ who "promise[d] never to treat her badly again"? Besides, if it was as simple as "seeing," then abusive relationships wouldn't happen. I don't want her to die yet because there's a remote chance of her being interesting again, but I really hope she's a red herring for the Iron Throne. She's lived long past her Stupidity Due Date™ while far better characters have died for much more minor mistakes. Even Sansa would probably make a better Queen than she does especially now that she's learned how to be not retarded. It's not like Dany knows jack shit about the people of Westeros and how to rule them properly anyway.

All she's good for IMO is spearheading the fight against the White Walkers with her dragons. Maybe she can use her experience to start a new Valyria of her own (and maybe fuck a few Blackfyres into helping her), but she doesn't deserve any stake in Westeros. Even Jon is too good to waste his seed on her at this point.

I'm wading through Storm of Swords, but here's my Clash of Kings thoughts reposted from elsewhere.

>Still think the show is a massive improvement in some ways (Cersei being far more interesting is the big one for me), but the book has some actual ground to stand on now, and it's becoming more obvious how much material in the show is pulled from later books/made the fuck up. Like, Robb basically does not appear in the book at all after he and Cat talk about Theon and Renly, and Jaime only gets one scene. I knew Talisa was almost totally made up, but holy shit.

>The Shae/Tyrion stuff is outright better in the show than in the book, mostly because while Shae is hardly great in the show, she is utterly unbearable in the book. Also Bronn is more amusing in the show when he and Tyrion are doing the fantasy buddy cop thing whereas in the book Tyrion's constantly suspicious of him.

>Who the fuck is Strong Belwas and why is Barristan pretending to not be Barristan even though it's totally obvious that's who it is? The Qarth stuff was pretty different in general, aside from the Funhouse which still didn't have that big Drogo sequence from the show. I guess you can't make an entire season of a TV show which basically amounts to "this major character sat around feeding her people for awhile, met some weird magicians, then left." ~holding pattern~ as fuck.

>The Arya stuff is where things get murky, because there's things I like better about that in both versions. I like that in the show she doesn't just blow TWO deaths like she does in the book, the second one in the show is an act of dire need (also that Jaquen eyeroll is great). I also think the choice to make her Tywin's cupholder in the show was smart, but that could just be because I think any decision that gives Dance more screentime is a good one. On the other hand the book has her totally fucking end that dude to orchestrate their getaway which was pretty cool too. Mixed bag.

>I have no idea what people are talking about with Jon, that character is exactly the same in both versions. If he seems whinier in the show then either S3 is the point of divergence on that or you just don't realize how whiny he can be until there's a face and sound to go with some of these lines. Either way he does his job and offs Halfhand.

Brienne: FUCK YOU CAT YOU ARE EVEN WORSE THAN BEFORE, though I can't imagine she and Pod are actually dead because then this entire plot was meaningless.

Jaime: So at this point I'm juggling between him and the still very specifically alive Loras for being the Valenquar, leaning on the latter. Sure he's maimed, but he's actually in the city, and Jaime has no plans on showing up. I guess it could also refer to Kevan since he benefits from all this but he doesn't seem the type and the High Septon's just running on his own.
Sansa: lalala adventures in Littlefingerland, nothing really interesting

Aaaaaaaaand that's Dance with Dragons.

-Stannis isn't dead, deaths offscreen aren't deaths to be trusted.
-On a related note, Robert Strong is probably Mountainstein, which makes Qyburn a straight up necromancer. I would also accept his being Robertstein but this is unlikely.
-We can probably say goodbye to Jon the man, but we can say hell to Ghost John, who is a lot like the Punisher except he's a giant wolf.
-Arya will probably continue to not affect the plot no matter how badly we want her to.
-Martin says we'll see some Lands of Always Winter. BENJEN STARK POV CHAPTERS, YOU WILL ALL SEE.
-Wyman is going to continue piling some bodies up if he's not a body himself.
-Roose is probably dead if Ramsay is sending letters in his name, which means it's time for Ramsay to completely unravel all of Roose's carefully laid plans.
-Aegon, John, and Dorne are going to rampage around the Stormlands.
-I don't even fucking know what's going to happen with the King's Landing council. Without Pycelle and Kevan, and with Cersei probably going to pass her trial, the Tyrells and the Lannisters (what's left of them) are going to rip the city apart.
-Meanwhile, Euron and company will rampage around the Reach.
-I still can't imagine what Jaqen is doing in Oldtown, but it's probably bad news for Sam and co.
-Similarly, I don't know what the fuck to say about Varys and his children of the corn.
-Slaver's Bay is going to turn into a total shitstorm, and the only one who's going to REALLY enjoy it is Tyrion.
-Dany and Drogo are going to burn down the Dothraki Sea.
-Davos, Rickon, Shaggydog, and Osha in: Stranded in Skagos
-John switched the horns for Melisandre to burn, but both horns were fake according to Tormund, and I can't think of a reason for him to lie about that. So I'm going to say the Walkers have it and the Wall is coming down.
-Bran will continue to not be interesting.
