Can we have one episode that doesn't end with Korra getting her ass kicked? One?

Though I must admit she was sexy as hell with her battle damage at the end of this one.

Alright, from memory the awesome moments...

Airtemple kids are best kids.

That reaction to Ikki spilling the beans on Korra's crush to Asami

Ikki's reaction to being shut out

Meelo. JUST ALL OF MEELO

Asami was fucking amazing in that chase scene, and yeah she has every right to go squinty eyed at Korra and Mako. I approve of this reaction.

Fuck yeah, Korra fighting for the nonbenders

Tarrlok rising from smarmy politician to extremely capable bad guy? Oh my. And it looks like the show might actually examine the fact that bending has advanced over the past hundred years, since I'm sure we'll find out why Tarrlok can bloodbend so well.

And I hope the next few episodes are about Korra getting to terms with her spirituality, with added guidance from Aang.

(And it looks like Aang's mysterious villain whose name I can't spell properly was a bloodbender, too?)

HIBY confirmed, indeed.

And here we all thought Amon was somehow related Yakone. Turns out Tarrlok seems to have some weird "corrupt the dream city of the man who killed my Pa/Sifu" thing going on.

His bloodbending makes me wonder... maybe Amon wasn't entirely bullshitting about the spirits giving him his ability. It might not really be energybending, just an extraordinary form of chi-blocking, yet some malicious spirit taught him it the same as it did uber-bloodbending to Yakone and Tarrlok.

I don't think moonless bloodbending is such a stretch, really. Hama invented the art in the same timespan the original series, so there was plenty of room for it to improve.

A lot like how the metalbending that Toph pioneered has evolved from clunky brute-force ripping and tearing to fine control over lengths of wire.

Only question is where Yakone learned the art himself. Korra knew the details of how bloodbending worked, so maybe Katara was not quite as tight-lipped with the info as she should've been.

Or where Amon learned his energybending/uber-chi-blocking.

Amon claims he learned it from spirits who turned against the old Avatar. What if he's only half-bullshitting? A spirit who can dispense secret knowledge? With a beef against the Avatar?

There's one that fits just that bill.

>korra confirmed for never having airbended this whole time

interestingly enough, I had a theory that the spirit world was being disrupted or that the avatar chain was corrupted in Aang's time, which would explain why Korra herself is not capable of being spiritual. I guess it seems slightly more plausible now.

Lion Turtle: "To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be
unbendable, or you will be corrupted."

I'm begenning to think that Korra's inability to airbend or lack of spirituality isn't actually her fault. I think that Aang took Yakone's bending away, but in the process, Yakone was able to fight back enough that he somehow damaged the Avatar spirit itself, causing an imbalance between the spiritual and physical.

That's why Korra was able to master the more physical elements so fast and young, but can't manage to airbend or can't even activate the Avatar state to save her life, literally.

The damage to the Avatar spirit may have also been why Aang gave instructions to have the next Avatar after him guarded so closely by the White Lotus.

The line that escalated Korra and Tarrlok's fight was her saying that he's as bad as Amon. When she said that, his eyes bugged right the hell out. There's clearly something there that we don't know yet.

As for Korra's 'excessive' force, he was clearly trying to kill her the whole time. He wasn't just splashing water around, he was using it like blades with cutting force...and he didn't escalate up to that or anything, that was his opening move. And Korra...well, she's always had a temper. Not surprising she wouldn't take kindly to this smug prick opening up her face.

Or

Tarrlok is Amon

Think about it guys. Tarrlok is a persona, the corrupt councilman, which he is using to stir up dissent within the non-bender population and drive a wedge between them and the Totally Oppressive Bender-Only Council. He basically made the bender/non-bender divide a real thing just to give Amon's claims more meaning, to show that every non-bender is going to be affected. Non-benders are the majority, and if all of them stand together, they will be able to overpower the council. And they stand behind Amon, who has already stated his aim to control the city, and is driven by his hunger for power instead of equality. Tarrlok has a very similar goal made clear in this episode.

"Tarrlok" will be ousted with the rest of the council but he will still be in charge from under the mask.

Perhaps they are different people and are just working together, however I can't see Tarrlok taking the fall like this. What does he gain by playing the bad guy and demonising the social class he's in?

Heh, when the episode first started, the whole Krew's on the island, i'm half-expecting it to be a "rest" episode building up the characters and the relationships more... then BAM WHAM OH GOD IT'S BUILDING UP SO QUICKLY EVERYTHING IS BLOWING UP

God, that Tarrlok-Korra fight escalated so quickly! Dem cuts and rips and firebreathing and KORRA SMASH and

bloodbending... even creepier and more sickening to hear it at work than in the original ATLA episode. Far less "puppetmaster" and more "I will break you."

And I liked the touch at the end with the credits at the bottom as Korra's getting taken away instead of having them running after the end frame. Leaves more time for the viewer to go "no no no Korra no goddammit Tarrlok this can't be how the episode ends...."

Absolutely nothing Korra did in that fight was even remotely reminiscent of pro-bending. Watch it again. She starts the fight by ripping half the floor up, follows that with a continuous flame-thrower like stream of fire, pulls a wall to block Tarrloks attack, uses the entire wall behind him to smash him out of his office, explodifies the walkway he's holding on to, then jumps down and craters the ground as she lands.

The only part of the entire fight that's even remotely pro-bendingish is when she does a back flip to dodge Tarrloks barrage, and even that's a pretty basic martial arts tactic to escape an attack.

Personally, I really hope that Tarrlok isn't in cahoots with Amon. The cliched "Senator Palpitane" thing of a master chess player orchestrating the whole conflict makes me yawn. Having someone like Tarrlok be power-hungry but also strongly in the "anti-Equalist" camp helps show that even the right side can have evil people on it. To make Tarrlok be working with Amon gets rid of that complexity -- it would be like Jet secretly working for the Fire Nation by fueling resentment against the freedom fighters.

I kind of think that, just as Amon is influenced by the early twentieth century communist movement in a lot of ways, Tarrlok's attitude and actions are meant to reflect the opposite political extreme around the same time.

Namely, Fascism.

Personally I hope that they don't decide to have the two working in cahoots, if only because 1. It won't make a lick of sense, and 2. implying that everything bad in the world is due to a shadowy group of people controlling both sides behind the scenes... is both cliche and kind of stupid.

It'd be like saying that Long Feng, Jet and Ozai were actually working together from the very start, as they all came into conflict with Aang at some point and were willing to go to extremes to get what they wanted.

The complaints about Mako and Bolin being useless have to stop. Even if they were completely worthless in combat (and they're not, they're definitely stronger than season one Sokka and pre-118 Katara), Korra needs them as friends. A father figure and a dog aren't enough.
>> No. 103373

As the prime mover in such complaints; no. They are completely irrelevant to the story now. Whatever psychological benefit she receives from their company is insignificant compared to the trouble it has caused her. In addition, Mako is nothing but a walking dick that Asami and Korra must fight over because of formulaic Twilight fan pandering and this cheapens both their characters. Bolin is an annoying clown whose job description appears to be moment-killer. There's no situation with emotional content he can't completely fuck up. He's everything bad about this show being on Nickelodeon. His presence is a thousand idiotic network executives laughing in my face.
>> No. 103376
Furthermore, as Korra is without a doubt superior in the bending arts in every way, what they do every episode is make her look useless. She didn't do jack shit in that car chase scene even though she could've fucking whipped the shit out of both of the guys who fell onto the car simultaneously. This isn't like Avatar, where for a long time Katara was more or less equal with Aang in terms of waterbending ability and its usefulness in defense; this is keeping Korra's potential locked up in the basement with a rag in its mouth just to make them appear to have some kind of potential use other than a ham-fisted romantic subplot.

For weeks I couldn't figure out what was causing this bizarre tonal yo-yo effect in the show that leaves me with mixed opinions about everything. It was only this week I finally figured out that it was Mako and Bolin. They don't take shit seriously, ever, they don't have problems in their lives that I can find sympathetic enough to override those of Korra and Asami, and they don't make me want to know them better. They're window-dressing. Mike and Bryan actually finally did it. They made a series where men are the useless sluts who fart around in the background while the people who actually matter do things.

I bet Tarrlok tries to explain all the destruction from he and Korra's fight as her going berserk and running off to do things alone. Too bad Tenzin won't buy that shit for a single second. More likely, I think Tarrlok would spin it as the Equalists attacking City Hall, with him and Korra fighting them off. They capture Korra, who bravely sacrificed herself to save Republic City's leader.

>>103391

Re: Mako and Bolin's narrative weakness, I think the problem with them is two-fold.

The pro-bending arc in the first half of the season wasn't tied in well enough with the Equalist and Airbending arcs. Tenzin's whole reason for reluctantly approving of Korra joining pro-bending was because it let Korra put airbending theory into practical use. Like Bolin said, the key to pro-bending is being light on one's feet. But that tie-in to airbending got dropped after Episode 2, and pro-bending instead became a sport where Korra could screw around with instead of focusing on the serious problems in her life.

The second problem was that the brothers don't have the same personal stake in the Equalist dilemma as the other mains do. Korra has her dark parallel messiah in Amon, Asami has a Luke/Vader thing going on with Hiroshi, Tenzin has his personal conflict with Tarrlok stemming from the Equalists. Mako and Bolin are threatened because they're benders, sure, but that feels nebulous compared to the concrete issues facing the others. Bolin's kidnapping didn't have repercussions beyond one scene in one episode, and even the arena attack (an attack on their home and livelihood!) didn't seem to really hurt.

>> No. 103456
I have an idea regarding why Korra is having trouble with her spiritual side.

Namely: Amon was telling the truth about the spirits giving him his abilities.

They may feel that the existance of Republic City is fundementally wrong, as although it's brought about peace between the peoples of the world it's also contradicted the balance between nations that Roku clashed with Sozin over and what Aang clashed with Zuko over in the Promise.

So now Korra doesn't just have to deal with pseudoCommunist revolutionaries, an increasingly Fascistic government and organised crime, she has to try and win around the spirit world to the modern era as well.

And Tarrlok probably will just say that Korra was abducted by Equalists, who pursued them out of the city on a potential wild goose chase or something.
>> No. 103457
>>103456
That is an interesting point, too often people assume that the spirits are absolutely good and know exactly what the best thing for the world is. But what if many of them are just reactionary pricks who don't like the idea that people of all elements are starting to peacefully coexist and develop technology that makes humanity more powerful at the expense of the natural world that the spirits rule and protect.

That sort of goes along with what I said when Amon first claimed "the spirits" were guiding him.

The correct reply to that is "which ones?"

>> No. 103464

I kind of the the impression that the spirits in Avatar are kind of... um... spiteful. For instance, in the episodes in season one where the panda spirit started abducting people and destroying their town due to the Fire Nation burning down a section of its forest... were there no forest fires prior to that? Surely the forest regrowing on its own would be obvious to a nature spirit?

Same as with the spirit who had the world's largest library. He didn't appear to see the difference in using information to wage a war of aggression against other people and attempting to use information to STOP said war, even if one of the people in the latter group is the Avatar.

I don't think that it's entirely unreasonable for spirits to decide that the massive population increase coupled with the rise of industrialisation and the invention of the automobile might be the sign to return humanity to their pre-Fire Nation War state.
>> No. 103466
>>103464
I'd disagree slightly. They are spiteful, but only if others intrude on their turf. Koh is a prankster of sorts but I don't think he had a plan for stealing Kuruk's beloved beyond feeling like he needed to be taken him down a peg or two.

Human affairs don't tend to interest them much beyond that which violates their domain. The Avatar is the exception, and has to take the form of a human to do so. Picking a random guy and giving him powers to enact some kind of socio-political overhaul doesn't seem like their style.

Hell for all we know something Aang did annoyed a few spirits, or let free some long-imprisoned bad spirits... that's me spitballing, the point is that we have a very incomplete picture of the spirit world. I agree with>>103528 in that I don't think she was actively trying to kill him per say... but she's certainly not the type of person to hold back. You're right, she isn't the type of cartoon protagonist to keep dangerous actions or life threatening injuries off the table, this much is true. Korra is very, very raw. She's got no filters, she sees something she wants/wants to do and she just goes and goes; regardless of what said thing is. It adds a nice degree of tension to this series, because I know that (to an extent) Korra won't stop at the last minute and go "No! No, that's not how us good guys do things".

As... bloodthirsty as this might sound, its one of the reasons I like the show so much and like Korra as a character so much because she's so driven by primal emotions and doesn't let "the right thing" stop her. Sometimes, you just want the hero to whip out a gun and at least try to shoot the bastard. Not saying the hero actually has to shoot the guy, but the motive must be present.

I don't think she necessarily has killer instinct or intended to kill Tarrlock. She didn't have a whole lot of "intent" period.

Like Avatar Kuruk (who she REALLY needs to look up), she's a bit of a brash showoff, loves a good fight, loves some hot sexy eye-candy, hates sitting around doing nothing, and is all about just going with the flow, acting on impulse rather than thinking things through. "I'm gonna be a stowaway and go to Republic City! What'll I do when I get there? Eh, I'll think of something. STOWAWAY! Man that sounds cool..."

If someone had yelled "that's it Korra, kill him!" during the fight with Tarrlok she would have frozen up horrified and stammered a "n-no, I'm not... I wouldn't kill him!" or something to that effect.

But he hit her with brutal attacks, and she just went with it, throwing brutal attacks right back without thinking about it and going "oh right, he was trying to kill me, so if I start throwing the same sort of shit back at him, he's likely to die. Hmmm. Which would probably be badish. I guess. For a few reasons. Like... um... oh! Sanctity of life, due process, and all that... Plus it'd make Tenzin really cranky."

She really needs to learn about Avatar Kuruk though, because the lifestyle he lived ended up costing him dearly. It would behoove her to learn from his mistakes.

I don't think so, while in general Korra and Kuruk lead similar sorts of lifestyles and have similar mindsets; the specific mistake that Kuruk made that led to his divine punishment was that he didn't get involved in world affairs that much. Now Korra could be faulted by trying to solve problems in a heavy-handed or overly naive way, but she is certainly not ignoring the problems and conflicts of the world around her.
